THE JPTTTSBUEG , DISPATCH. WEDNESDAY, ,JTJNE' 29, 1893. f 3- i" MR. KEID IS NOTIFIED. Officially Told of His domination for the Vice Presidency BE ATOWS BIS PARTI LOTALT-Y And Feels Assured of the Republican Suc cess at the Polls. BIMPATHT EXPKESED FOE ME. BLAIKB Xew York, June 2L The members of ihe committee appointed by the Minneap olis convention to notify Mr. Whitelaw Reid of his nomination for the Vice Presidency have been for several days gatherinjr at the Filth Avenue Hotel in this city. This morn ing the members of the committee took car riages at the hotel and proceeded to the Grand Central Railroad station, where, at 10.29 o'clock they proceeded in a train for "White Plain, from which place they were taken to Ophir Farm, Mr. Reid's country residence, where they carried out the mis sion intrusted to them. They took lunch with Mr. Reid, and were his cuests for the remainder of the day until 4 o'clock, when the train lelt on its return to New York. The committee arrived at White Plains about 11:15 o'clock, and proceeded at once to Mr. Reid's residence. They were cor dially received by Mr. Reid, and at once proceeded to the business of the day. Sena tor Dubois made the speech of notification. The Speech of Notification. "Mk. Retd The National Republican Contention, recently held in Minneapolis, selected a representative from each State and Territory Jrom anion? its delegates to notify yon that the great Republican party of the nation had selected you as its can didate lor Vice President of the United States. Speaking for them, it is now my pleasing duty to give you that formal noti fication. 'This honor, one of the highest which a free and thoughtful people can bestow, came to vou unsought and with a unanimity rarely witnessed. The American people appreciate the patient and skilltul diplom acy by which vou opened the markets of France to the product of the farmer. The securing ot a market is the ultimate ob ject of all nations in modern politics, and 3 our success in that great field will com mand for you the hearty approval ot the producers of the United States. We be lieve that the people will sustain Repub lican principles, will indorse the person ality ot our standard bearers and thnt the wisdom of our action at Minneapolis will be fully demonstrated by your triumphant election at the polls in November next." Sir. Reid Makes a Keply. Mr. Reid replied in the following terms: "Mr. Cb&tnnan and Gentlemen: "Your visit at my home and this formal statement sinks deep on my mind the impres sion which the known act of the convention had already produced. The occasion is too preat for the expression of merely personal feelings. Een my natural and heartfelt sense of gratitude for the confidence shown and the hizh trust devolved seems in this case too unimportant to those you represent lor more than a word. The party which has guided this country on its path of pros perity with but four years' interval since 18.50 cives official notice through its duly authorized representatives in 44 independent State and five Territories of its choice for the second office within the gift of 65,000,- 000 of ireenien, who cover a continent and arc soon also to possess more on the seas. "A profound sense of responsibility and a mot earnest desire to discharge the trust ou have reposed, to the satisfaction of those you now represent and to be success iul, for the best interests of the country afterward, are the overmastering emotions of the hour. Not having sought the great honor vou confer as you have justly stated, 1 am the more prompt in saying that as a citizen and a Republican I shall not shrink Irom the duty you impose. There will be a more convenient opportunity for such ex pression of political convictions as may be thought appropriate to the times and to the actual issues. He AaopU the Platform In Full. "But having already carefully considered the statement ot our party principles, put lorth by your convention, I may sar at once that 1 accept and adopt them in full. They are the principles and the party under the sway of which the country has attained its phenomenal growth and prosperity under which the plain people have ruled; labor has been freed, honored and better rewarded than elsewhere; the largest exam ple of equality before the law the world lias yet seen has been secured and educa tion, moralitv and the general welfare have been promoted. To reject these principles and this party would be to indict the glori ous history of the nation for almost the past third of a century. "You find a naturafleader in the eminent public servant, the substantial results of whose wise and faithful administration fur nish such inspiration for the canvass. I had expected to find associated with him my distinguished friend who now adorns the office ot Vice President, As the dele gation of my State and with it the repre sentatives of the party at large have thought it politically wise to adhere to the doctrine of rotation In office it gives me the right to claim not merely the earnest support of a united party, of which we are sure, but the best counsel and the most watchful personal assistance of all its faithful and experienced leaders without exception, to the end that this great Commonwealth may again throw its decisive vote as it did four years ago and indisputably can do again on the Republi can side. Sympathy Expressed for Blaine. "I cannot suppress on this occasion, in xihich he would have taken such a cordial interest, one word of affectionate recollec tion for my friend in so many Presidental campaigns, the great statesman whose pres ent cruel bereavement, following hard upon two similar blows, has touched the tenderest bymjiathy of all, not merely of his political associates, but of both parties and of the n hole country. "Sly State," and I think I may venture to add my profession, will appreciate the man ner in which this nomination has been made and announced, deriving an added grace as. it does lrom the unanimous vote Jrom this body of representative men from everv section of the country. "The political sky is bright with promise. It seems a Republican year; and, invoking the lavor of Almighty God upon a cause which we profoundly believe just, we may courageously face the contest with the con fident hope of victory at the end." The Second Avrnne Company Purchase the Braddnck and Turtle Creek Bold and M 111 Bun a Continuous Una There A Park for the Twenty-Third Ward, The Second Avenue Railway Company has purchased the'Braddock and Tur tle Creek Electric Railway with the view of extending their line to Braddock. The idea is to run the cars from Second avenue to Braddock and Turtle Creek, the connect ing link between the two lines to bV built and equipped as quickly as possible. The purchased road, it is said, has been running very irregularly owing to poor motors. Eventually a branch line will be constructed to Homestead. Instead of building abridge at Glenwood one will be erected near Salt "Works station, on the B. & O., to a point that will reach the business center of Home stead. . William Yost, attorney "for the Law and Order Society, held the biggest block of stock, amounting to $54,000, and controlled the Braddock road. The original capital stock was $50,000, but it was increased to $100,000 when the line had been running about four months. It is said that only 800 shares at $100 have been paid in. Mr. Yost yesterday refused to talk about the sale. The other principal stockholders who sold out were James G. Gayley, General Super-J luicuueuii vi iuc unriicx'O ultra iuiuwiq plant, Justice Fred W. Edwards and Super intendent T. E. Stamets, the total sale amounting to about $70,000. Another result of the deal is the fact that the Twenty-third ward will secure a fine park. The company has purchased the site opposite the old St Michael's Seminary at 'Glenwood, and that portion not used tor a power house will be turned into a park. This power house will take the place of the one at Brady street and Second avenue. The plans are expected to be completed in a few davs. The park will be over eight acres in size. FOR JV1.BVOUS EXHACsTlON Use Ilorsford's Acid Phosphate. Dr. H. a McCoy, Algona, la., says: "I have used it in cases of dyspepsia, nervous ex haustion and wakefulness, with pleasant results. Also think It of great service in depressed condition or the aystom resulting from biliary derangement" An Educator of Mntlc The idea 'in Inventing the -Solfanwas to make an instrument that a person could play without the years of practice made necessary by the piano and organ and at tile same time to nave it in no way mechan ical, but capable of the most delicate shad ings of tempo and expression entirely at will of the performer. The drudgery of learning to play Is the incessant practice necessary to enable a person to manipulate the keyboard, while the pleasure derived from giving the music feeling and expres sion. This understood, it was reasoned that if the execution could be done for the player and the tempo ami expression left under his control, the deslrod result would be achieved. The -Eolian is an embodiment of these idoas, and upon it, with one week's prac tice, a person with no musical education whatever can become a really fine per former. The great feature of tbe instrument is the high class of music it performs. The catalogue embraces nearly S 000 pieces, in cluding the symphonies, operas and over tures of all the gi eat masters. The rendi tion of these pieces is wonderfully accurate and serves to make the -Eollan a wonderfui educator for both old and young. The many thousands having musical taste and innate ability, but who are unable to give the years or practice necessaty to enable them to pcriorm with the accuracy de manded by their con ect ear and cultivated taste, aie with the .Solian able to gratify their love of music and play for themselves any and all classes or music. One of the most remarkable things about the -Eoliau is its peculiarly beautilul tono. It is not like the piano or organ, but resembles more than anj thing else a small orchestra with Its various parts. Messrs. REFRIGEHAT0R5 KAUFMANNS SCDDDER SCOOTS From This TTor!d Into the Next by the Morphine Boat The PhjsleUn Mur derer Bad Saved Doaea Daily Until Be Accumulated Sufficient for Suicide. Chicago, June 21. Dr. Henry Martin Scudder, the physician charged with the murder of hia mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Canton, and who was awaiting trial in the County jail, died from the effects of a dose of morphine, apparently self-administered with suicidal Intent, at an early hour this morning. -, The doctor had been in good spirits during the day, reading and talking with the jail attendants, and teeming very cheerful in manner. At 8.S0 the door of his cell was locked for the night Soon afterward two of the night warders heard a series of deep groans issuing from the oell. and on enter ing they discovered Dr. Scudder in 'a dying condition. At 12:30 Br. Bcudder died with out having regained consciousness. George Painter, a condemned murderer who occupied the next cell to that of Dr. Scudder, said that the latter had been given morphine freqeently in small quantities by the physician who had been attending him. From remarks he had heard the doctor make, Painter thinks he had been saving the doses of morphine until he had accumu lated a sufficient quantity to end his life. The object of the murder, it was claimed by the prosecution, was a determination to out her out of the way after having forged her will, so that Seudder'a wife would be come her principal heir. Mrs. Dunton's skull was crushed bra heavy wooden club. Insanity was the plea offered, and the case was several times continued in the Criminal Court to secure testimony on the point from witnesses in India, where the doctor lived with his father, who was stationed there as a missionary. His trial was set for July. The full quarts or GHbson. Finch, Overholt and Bear freek rye whiskies bearing the signature of Max Klein can be relied upon as absolutely pure. Price 1 per full quart, or six quarts for $5. mwf Good Reason Why It Should. Mr. "W. M. Terry, who has been in the drug business at Elkton, ICy., for the past 12 years, says: "Chamberlain's Cough Remedy gives" better satisfaction than any other cough medicine I have ever sold." There is good reason for this. No other will cure a cold so quickly, no other is so certain a preventive and cure for croup; no other affords so much relief in cases of whooping cough. tvrhsu To-Day, To-Day.
