THE TRADE OUTLOOK A Jobber's Views as to Grain Pros pects in tbe Northwest. CEREAL BULLS ARE DISAPPOINTED. Alleghenj Tanners Kot Ep;r to Boy Hides at the Decline. A BOSTON TIBW OF FOOTWEAR TRADE Office or The Dispatch. Pittsburg, Saturday, Juno 18. One of our leading flour jobbers returned a dav or two a;o from a trip through the northwest In an interview to-dar, he had this to say: "The outlook for the incoming crop of wheat, both spring and winter, is promising. The good promise has weak ened prices of old wheat, and flour is not so firm at sources ot supply as it was a week or two ago. Oats are also looking well throughout tbe western country. Corn, however, is far behind its average time. The.-backward spring and the floods later on very much delayed the corn planting time. A week ago many of tbe farmers through tbe section I visited bad not planted corn. Present prospects are that the corn crop will fall below the average this season. All now depends on the postponement or the fall frosts be vond the r.sunl time. While flour is dull it is not likely to go any lower. Jobbers have been pursuing the hand-to-mouth policy on account of uncertain and declining markets, and any future changes aio likely to be up ward." Cereal Markets. By reference to home market column it will be seen that receipts of grain, bar and flour for the last week have been steadily on the decline There w ere bulletined at the Grain Exchange 92 carloads less this week thanlat. But, in spite of tho falling off of receipts, markets have shown a tendency to lower prices all along tbe line. A week ago corn and oars were active and firm with prices on the advance. Now they are weak with tendency downward. All bull move ments in cereal lines have had a short career this season. Once prices begin to advance the abundant yield of last year shows itself. Tliere is evidently abundance In the land, and favorable prices soon call it to tbe front. Hides and Calfskins. No large sales have been reported this week. Xothwithstanding reduced prices tanners do not seem eager to buy. The Allegheny tannors report an unusally large accumulation of stock and will not buy ficely until tills is worked oft Green stetT hides trimmed, 75 lbs and up 6 ttreen steer hides, trimmed, CO to 75 lbs fi t.reru toer hides, trimmed, under 60 lbs 8 Green cow tudts, trimmed, all weights. ........ 3S Green bull hide-, trimmed, all weights.. ...... 4 Green call-Mns. The Boston nra!d has this to say of tho situation as to the boot and shoo trade: The movement in boots and shoes, from the standpoint of inanulactuiers, is very good, and the market is strong. Tho market is Btrong from the fact of the strong position of leather. Pole leather has been advanced, and nolds the advance, hllo upper leather pi omibes to advance, under the strength of the fiO-day cnrrailment of production. At the satnotinic there has been no advance in the prices ot boots and shoes. Manufact urers arc taking orders lor fall goods on the kudo ba-io of prices as before the GO-day cur tailment in leather, and thev do not seem gcncmlH to expect to get any better prices for goods They only expect a firm maiket. They will evidently take orders at tho prices ot last season, and ill trust to luck to take care of the pi ices of leather at the time the are obliged to buy. liut the position of leather is helping the boot and shoe trudo. in that tho leather mar ket isnckrouledged to be very firm, and the buj ers of boots and shoes are"not expecting easier prices. Indeed, it is pretty generally usrscd that the maiktt is vers- stiong, and the Jobbers aro satisfied to get goods at old price. They are taking rather more good than nni!, on such a condition of the market. Leading manufactmcr note that t'l.m i usual.3 the cae at this season The j samples Are bettor lieard from than a rear iuu at this xtinc, and hoardXromln the shape of more bubstxnitial orders on these samples. At tho simo time the jobbers aro already hurry In np the jroods they have ordered, howinir that stocks are reduced in the Job lH'i' hands andaNo that the trade promises tube early. Tho summing up of the spring tradn Mas a very satifactorv one on tho whole, with better pioflts than were gener ally expected. LIVE STOCK MARKETS. New York, June 18. The stock market to day was the dullest we have had in a long time; there was no disposition to trade and the exchanges were in all hut a few cases for small fractions and possessed no signifi cance. There were no selling orders of note in the market. While opening prices wero about those of 'last evening, some realiza tions caused fractionally lower prices in the first hour, the room traders taking still a bearish view of the market and, predicting further large shipments pf gold for next week. The realizations continued, and the bears were encouraged to help the decline along by selling Union Pacific, Northern Pa cific preferred, and in the first hour actually drove its price down 1 per cent. Distillers was strong at first, and at 4 r. M. showed a net gain of one per cent; but the general weakness and realizations on the advance from it lowest point a few days ngo caused a uaction of a large fraction. Tliis stock furmshed all the activity seen dniing the day. and was the only one whose transactions reached Ave flgnres. The decline In Union Pacific was hastened by the rumor that the holdings of Sidney Dillon would be llkelv to como upon the market with about 10,000 share.; There was no confirmation or this, however, and an unexpectedly favorable back statement induced covering in the late dealings with a consequent partial rally. Railroad bonds were also extremely dnll and uninteresting to-day, transactions or only $339,000 being accomplished without any material cnange among tho active issues, though Hocking Valley 6s ,.lost 2 at 100. Tho temper was simply stagnant, and 110 marked inquiry was to be seen In any thing. The'rollowlng table shows the prices or active stocks on the .New York Stock Exchange yester day. Incidents of the Past Week in Local Specu lative Circles. While the stock market was not remark able for activity duting tho week ending Satuiday, it was for the strong tone which characterized values. Bidders were moder ately aggiessive, but holders offered the goods wanted quite sparingly. These two iucidents should allay fears. If any are en tertained, of serious breaks in any direc tion. Stereotyped con ditions prevailed, and reports from the banks from dav to day were much alike. The borrowing demand was limited, but the supply was the reverse. Checking and de positing were welt up. Rates ruled easy at fi6 per cent. In the face of piled up wealth, the expoitsof gold received scarcely a pass ing notice. Theie is no premium for it abroad. Expoits are largely due to remit tances for July disbursements.
