vH . V THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, MONDAY, JUNE 13. 1892. THE TRADE OUTLOOK. Pittsburg Salt Manufacturers in the 11 ids t of a Boom and ORDERS COJIIM FK01T FAR AWAY. Bromine Is Now Exported From ThU Citj to European Torts. COFFEE CROr LARGEST FOE IEAES OrricE or The Dispatch, ) PiTTSBimo, Saturday, June lL There are four firms In Pittsburg and .Allegheny engaged In the manufacture of lalt. The daily output of these firms is equal to 1,200 barrels, or 7,100 barrels per week. Frotn February to June is the dull reason in this industry. Trade was quiet from the beginning of theyear until the past two weeks. Of late there lias been quite a Jiooinandthe salt manufacturers are now noi king up to their capacity, and have no trouble in disposing of their products. Tbe smallpox scaie in that part of the Ohio Valley, of -which Pomeroy is the center, has had the effect of brinsinjr or ders to this citr which would ordinarily co to Pomeroy. Steamboats were prevented from landing at Pomeroy during the past week or two on account or the epidemic As a result orders are coming in freely to this city for salt, and there nave been heavy shipments as far south as Memphis. A representative of one of the firms reported: "We have shipped to-day 300 barrels of salt to the South, and Mill send ont 400 barrels on Monday. The other firms report the same activitv. Bromine Exported From Pittsburg. Bromine, which is a residuum of salt, has been of late years a drusr in the market and prices have been steadily drifting down ward. It seems that New Tors and Michi gan salt do not yield this valuable chemical. Pittsburg and Pomeroy have yielded such large lesults in the bromine line that prices have declined until 15c per pound has of late been the ruling rate. A decade ago, bro mine tins sold at $1 T5 per pound. The annual output of bromine in the Pittsburg salt district is now equal to 450,000 pounds The low prices of late ha e brought de mand from across the seas, and 23 030 pounds were shipped from this city to Ger mam in the past n eek. Orders are already in tor more tfinn double this amount wliicn will be shipped to Antwerp nnd Havre in the coining week or two. Until recently bromine was principally imported from German ports. Now Pittsburg i able to re turn the compliment and our salt manu facturers axe able to lay down bromine in German ports at lower prices than it has been selling at there. in Grocery LI net. The coffee crop this season is reported to be tbe largest for the past six years. A sur plus of one and a half million bags is ex pected. There are now some 210,000 bags on the way from Brazil to Sow York. Aiepre sentative of one ofourleadinggrocery firms who had spent the most of this week in Sew Tork said to-day: "Tnere was talk in New York of an advance in coffee, but I am un able to sec on what the bulls can around their hopes. Tbe immense crop will In mr opinion knock out all the bull movements." Sugar is in tbe hands of the trust, and no man can tell w hat the future of markets will be in this line. Spreckels, who for tbe past two months has not been producing, has in the pat few days started his refineries with an increased oipacitvof 33 per cent. This daily output is now 9,000 barrels, still, mar kets continue firm. Hides and Calfskins. The reduction agreed on by Allegheny tanners went Into effect June 6, and trade is reported very quiet. Tanners are buying only in smill quantities, notwithstanding the tact that prices are now lower than they have been any time since the war. The dull ness reaches to all weights. Sheepskins alonp hold up to old prices and are fairly steady. following are prices paid by tanners for stock delivered here: Grren steer hliles, trimmed, 75 lhs and np.
