THE PITTSBUKe DISPAT6h, WEDNESDAY,. JUNE 8. 189a ro BUSINESS. lated Association of Iron Sleel Workers PBOGBESSIVES WIN THE DAT. AXXUAL CONVENTION. Sixth District Scale Causes a Sensation. 'T OP TIIE COMMITTEES .enteenth annual convention of ilgainated Association of Iron and Workers convened yesterday at 1 ok in Turner Hall on Forbes street. . hall was tastefully decorated with itins and flags. About 250 delegates . swered to the roll call, and it is expected that 300 will be present to-day. The address of welcome was made by "V. A Carney in a neat little speeclu President AVeihe responded in a short speech that was heartily applauded. The business was then taken up and was of a routine, character, being the reading of the names of the different committees and hear jnc their reports. To-day the convention will go into ses sion at 9:30 o'clock and it is expected to be a very stormy one as there is undoubtedly a difference of opinion on the question of wages between some of the delegates, who take no pains to conceal it The scale published exclusively in last Monday's DisrATcn is expected to cause a very breezy time when it is brought before the meeting. Several delegates gave it as their opinion that the scale of the sixth district would be used as a test of strength by the manufacturers of this district. Knlghls of Labor I)eopty Interested. District Master Workman Dempsey, Knights of Labor, was asked hiB opin ion of the scale published in Monday's DisrATCll and replied, "It will un doubtedly bring on a strike as the reduc tion is too much." This opinion will hare some effect as a great many of the less skill ed workmen employed about the iron plantsare members of the Knights of Labor. The same opinion was expressed by a num ber of other well-known labor men, some using a little more emphatic language. The following is a list of the committees appointed: Committee on Rules J. If. The borough of Sharpsburg held a, special election yesterday and decided, by a vote of 316 to 84, to build an incandescent electric light plant for supplying light to the in habitants. The result was a surprise to the most sanguine supporters of the scheme, as the element that had been opposing it had been making such a noise that it was feared they would defeat the proposition. Their weakness at the polls was gratifying to the progressive people of the town. The cost of the plant will be covered by a loan of S15.000. for which the borough will issne bonds, and the cost of operating the busi ness will be covered by a charge of 35 cents per light per month to consumers. Sharnsburc claims to have the cheapest and best government in the State. Her tax rate this year is only 4 mills. She has a waterworksof her own, supplying water to the people at rates 30 per cent lower than this city docs and yet more than maintain ing the'plant from the relenue. The streets are lighted bv arc lamps, supplied by the borough's own plant, at a cost of less than ?fi0 per lamp. The borough debt, including the proposed f 15,000 loan, is less than 575. 000, and there is a population or more, than 0,000. The gas company which has served the town tor "over 20 years has been furnish ing light at rates higher than this city. It is expected that the proposed step of the borough will drive the company out of business. The vote in the election was very light. The saloons were closed all day. but the sneak-easies did a big business. HEW ADTERTISEMENT3. INTOLERABLE ECZEMA Two Boys Seriously Affected. Doctors and nil Remedies Fall. Cared by Cntlcura.
