w " 0 VY ' " ' ' . ' J " -.-- ' ' " ' THE . PITTSBURG- DISPATCH. WEDNESDAY. JUNE 8 1892L NEED READY MONEY. The Oil Eegion Sufferers Require Kothinff but Cash. PITTSBURG'S COMMITTEE RETURNS nd Tells What It Saw in ths Flood and Fire-Stricken District. LIBERAL COKTKIBCTIOXS COMING IN The Relief Committee appointed at the citizens' meeting in City Hall Monday afternoon, and which went direct in a special train to the stricken oil region, re turned to Pittsburg yesterday morning, after spending a nitrht among the sufferers from the flood and fire. Immediately after arriving in Pittsburg, the committee author ized the following statements We find the burned and flooded district to cover about four and a half or five acres and that there are at least 350 people homeless nnd destitute. Sixty-seven recovered dead bodies.. About 100 families In need, and that vi hat Is wanted most 1b money. There ts an excellent Hellef Committee organized in Oil City, compo-ed of reputable, thoroagh-going buMnesmen who exactly understand the situation, nnd who are quite competent to take charge of the work of relief at OH City. Mayor Gourley says what is most needed by the suflerers is ready money. They are being supplied with bed, bedding, and pro visions by neighboring towns. He says the Pittsburg committee was met at Oil City by a party of intelligent, earnest business men, who are fully competent to take care of their unfortunates, and who are extending relief in a systematic and careful way. The Oil City committee, Mayor Gourley says, was headed by Mayor Hunt. l'nbllc Slertlnc at Oil City. The Pittsbunrers were escorted to the Oil Exchange where a public meeting was held at which thesituation was thoroughly ex plained by W. J. Hukle, Colonel Hulings and others. The Pittsburg committee told what thev had been rent tor nnd what they were prepared to do.alter which the meeting adjourned. The Pittsburg and Oil City Re lief Committees then met and it was decided t leave all the work of relief with the Oil City committee. General "Wiley escorted the Pittsburg committee through the burned district of the city, after which the Pittsburg ers, with the exception of John Eaton, J.J. Yandergrift and George Heard, returned home. The others remained in Oil City over night and yesterday morning started overland to Titusville. On their way to Titusville they went through the valley between the two places and at 9 o'clock last night Mayor Gourley received the following telecram irom them'dated at Titusville: Wo find the situation here worse than at Oil Cuj , the los of life and property being greater. There are nt Oil CItv alone the creek nnd at Titusville fully 1,000 people in urgent need of aid. It is our Judgment that $20000 will be required to afford the neces sary leliel, of which amount $50,000 has been subscribed. This message was signed by Messrs. Eaton, Vandergrift and Heard. It Is Sfnt a Second Jahnfttown. James B, Scott, of the Pittsbnrg Relief committee, in speaking ol the oil country disaster yesterday, said: 'The people are to a certain extent mistaken about this dis aster. This is not a second Johnstown. At Johnstown the whole place was destroyed and the people who came out of the flood alive had nothing with which to care for anvone. They needed outside help and theT needed outside people to administer it. This time it is different. About 10 per cent of Oil City and of Titusville was de stroyed. This left both towns in shape to do all the work needed. They had plenty ot efficient people to do all the work required; they don't need outside committees, or doctors or nurses or charitable associations. They nave pieniv oi ineir own who are doing ex c lent service. They don't need any old clothes or old shoes or any provisions. "What they do need is money," and the more of that the people give the better. In both towns there are many persons who must be cared for until they can get to work again. The local committees have made excellent arrangements by which they can buy at cost, and all our workhere is to raise monev ioi them. It is just as if a disaster should kill a thousand people in Pittsburg. This town could care lor them and we would not need committees from Xew York or Chicago. That is the case in Oil City and Titusville to-day." Treasurer Thompson, who has oharge of the relief funds, yesterday received a num ler of liberal contributions. Mr. Thomp son says the Pittsburg people are thor oughly awake to the situation, and he is confident that he will yet receive enough to show Pittsburg's generosity for the unfor tunate people of the oil regions. At the Union station hey were met by James li. Scott, Reuben diller and S. S. Marvin. The party re naiued at the station until 9 o'clock, when hey left lor the stricken district. The iovernor said that a true picture of the cat trophe could only be obtained by personal i.spection which he said had prompted his ,it. Speaking of the plan of relief which . thought would be pursued Governor itnsou said: "From what I le;irn the .niinittees there have sufficiently re vered from the horror of the situation to , thoroughly organized, and thev will see ,at all contributions sent the'm reach le right parties. I do not know how long w ill be up there, but I will remain until secure an exact idea or the extent ot the ,lamity." On the same train with the Governor sev rnl coffins were sent to Oil City. The -ovcrnor watched closely and with marked iterest the loading of the coffins, and then, jrning to his Adjutant General, he said: That is a melancholy sight. It reminds ne rather painfully of Johnstown." A special meeting of the Advisory Coni- mittce of the G M. B. A. was helT last night. A donation of $500 was voted tor the sufferers of the oil countrr disaster. John W. Sullivan, G P. Reefer, E. V. Locher, Dr. T. M. McManus, M. J. 51c Mahon, M. H. Hocer and "V. T.
