Western Cheese Supply Now in Ex cess of Demand and the PRICES ARE BEING SHADED. Dealers in Atrricnltnral Implements Satis fied With Easiness. HOME TAXSEES VERT MUCH AT SEA Otfice ot The Dispatch. I Pittsburg, Tuesday, May 31. ( By reference to home market column it . will be seen that "Western cheese is now in supply beyond the wants of trade, and mar kets are steadily drifting lower. The qual ity of Ohio cheese on our markets thus far has not been irp to standard, and as a result prices hnve been weakening. Isew Yorjc cheese, on the other hand, has held up well, and prices are firm. It Is seldom that there is such a difference between prices in 2sew York and Ohio cheese as there has been of late. The wide divergence is due for the most part to the difference in quality of of ferings. There is no new Swcitzer cheese on the market and will not be for a month to come. Farmers Buying Implement?. Dealers in agricultural implements report an active trade, with volume fullv up to what it was at this time last year. Mowers, reapers ana rakes are raovinc out very freely at about the same m'ices nfc prevailed n yenr ago. Tho time for seeds is well nlsh over for this season. Volume of trade In this line lias passed that of last c.ison. with prices a shade btsher. Clover ed has nnt sold ns lilch for j cars as it !n; aonr thi season. Tanners lirreaif very much at sea be cause of tho action of the JTew England tan ners in huttmz down fortho Month ot Juno and Jnlv. Margins have been so close of late that manufacturers or leather have seen lit to curtail pioduct In tho hope of stiffening prices. The immediate result of the shut-down lias been a neaVeniiisnf the hide and rnlfKin market So tar the weak ening has affected mo-tly the shoe leather industry, rittsburjr is most Interested in the harness leather trade, and up till this time there has been no marked chance in this line. A movement counter to the action of -New England shoe leather tanneries has been inaugurated by Chicago hide dealers, and the result of the controversy only time will tell. Britain's leather Imports. The following is from the Chicago Hide and Leather, anl furnlshcb facts of inteicst as to the leather trade in tho mother country: "Imports of leather in Great Britain tlurine; last April show a decrease as compared with tboe of 1891. The total importations last month amounted to 9,549,712 pounds, valued at $2.S.50, of it hlch 7,470,635 pounds or the value of Jl,S7S.O60 went Into home consump tion, the balance having been re-exported; the quantity of foreign leather received during April, 1891. for home pur poses was 8,814,933 pounds valued at $2,376 100, an excess of 1.344.33S lbs. and $493. 04'J as compaied -nith this year's record. Tbe total imports in Great Britain tor tbe first four months of the year show a reverse result, however, as far as quantity is con cerned, as tlr.rin- that time 449,723 lbs. more ere, imported than in like period last year. Notwithstanding this increase in volume, oninir to altered maiket conditions, the actual value ot these imnorts (for home con sumption) for tho first four months of the year is less, than for last year by $451,530. A notable tact in connection with the import st-.tl-tics for the present vcar is that while their grand total does not vary much from la-t year's figures, the sources from which the imported leather has been drawn have changed very materially. Against 1891, this year's Imports fiom France, for the fouY months, Jell off $99,253, and those from tho United States $727.1.16: All of this has been made up by heavier drafts on the British East Indies and Australasia, other countries having hold about theirown. Is this merelv a chance circumstance or a case of the mother country looking after Its own de pendencies?'' EXDED IN A FIZZLE Tlie May !onx Deal Does Not Axnoant to Much Tbe Market Excited and Active to the Point of Fevetishness Trading right In Wheat. CHICAGO A huge inglorious fizzle ended the May corn deal. The market throughout the day was excited and active to the point or fevorishness. On the opening at tap of the bell $1 was bid for Jlay bylbiokers on the long side of the market. Corn rallied lc. ruled Irregular, and the closing was c lower than Saturday. The weather was again wet ana notwithstanding the fluctuating condition of the market, a firm undertone existed. Tho decrease In n heat and flour on ocean passage of 2.4S0, 000 bushels, besides the weather had a stiengthdning effect. The dull and lower cables ieemed to be ienored. The visible supply decrease was hardly what was ex pected. Oats opened up somewhat firmer, and after weakening as the day advanced on good crop icports, recovered again and closed from Jc to He lower, on tho deferred deliv eiie. A fair trade was transacted. Little More Light on the Big Deal in the Squirrel Hill District FEATURES OP MONET AND SPECULATION Complaint is occasionally made that tbe real estate market is not as activo as it ought to be at this season. This position is untenable It is true the market might be more active, and perhaps would be, but for a long siege of bad weather and impassable roads; but that this would be an advantage is by no means clear. There is so much idle money that it would be easy to start a "boom" in realty. This would be a posi tive evil. The market is far better as it ia. That it is strong and healthy no one will deny, and that it is reasonably active is susceptible of proof. In the last two or three weeks sales ranging from 510,000 to 5250,000, and aggregating up ward of $500,000, have been consummated and reported in the city papers. If to these were added the sales of single lots and small improved properties the total would surprise the public Pittsburg is becoming a great distributing center, its fame as the greatest manufactur ing city in the country has reached every quarter, and people are flocking here from all parts seeking opportunities lor trade and employment. Backed by such potent forces and influences, there is' not tlie slightest prospect of a lapse ot interest in real estate nor of a reaction: in values. More Light Let In. It was learned yesterday that Ira M. Burchfield, who has a tight grip on Twenty- third ward property, engineered the How ley deal in Squirrel Hill acreage, .reported in this column on Sunday. As stated this is the most important transaction ever con summated in that quarter. It may reach $300,000 or over. Nearly three years ago Mr. Burchfield concluded a series of deals in the sameward aggregating $225,000. The purchasers in the latter instance have im portant improvement schemes in view and abundant means to carry them through. Thev will be of great benefit not only to the locality in question, but to the entire city. A few details remain to be settled. As soon as they are arranged a complete his tory of the transaction will be given to the public Yesterday's Building Permit". Yesterday was an active day with the builders. Twenty permits were issued for 24 improvements, the total cost of which estimated at 591,400. Tbe most import ant are: J. C Sbaefer & Bros., brick car riage shop on Fifteenth street, Twentv- eighth ward. $14,000: George N. Hazlett. brick dwelling on Centeravenue, Thirteenth ward, $9,500; F. A. Ernz, brick business house on Carson street, Twentv-sixth ward, $8,600; Little Sisters of the "Poor, three story brick chapel on Penn avenue, $21,000; H. Miller & Bros., three brick dwellings on Carev street, Twenty-sixth ward, $5,000; Martin Sobsterosky, frame dwelling en Stobo street, Fourteenth ward, $5,000; a M. Johnston, two frame dwellings near Smith street, Twenty-third ward, $3,000; T. J. Black, frame dwelling on Aiken avenue, Twentieth ward, $3,000. Special Fratnres of Trade. Six hundred dollars has been paid for a strip of ground ten feet wide on Kelly street, iv iiKinsuurg. It is estimated that the supply of natural gas at Pittsburg will be exhausted In three years. So says the Wall Street JVetM. The same thing was said three years ago, and with quite as much reason as now. The supply is not exhausted. Semi-annual dividend payments due in Boston in June, will be $5,t49,049, which is an Increase of $1,386,067. The Newell building, on Fifth avenue, is undergoing reconstruction. The Husscy building, adjoining, is nenrlng completion. Outsiders writing to Flttsbnrg for land suitable for sub-division at $200 to $300 an acre show dense ignoranccof values. There is no property of the kind they want in the market at less than $2,000 an acre. The Bank of France and the Russian State Bank together bold $625,000,000 in gold. Tho Beaver Valley Ballwny, a little over three miles long, carried in 1891 491,540 pas sengers and received In lares $25,128 08. Daniel Wenke has bought fiom Sarah Herron 100 acres in Richland township, for which he-paid $10,000. Sales of stocks last month aggregated 11,610 shares, or which Birmingham Traction con tributed 2,805, Duquesne l,920and Manchester 1,365. It is said the piano and organ factory at Mendelssohn will be abandoned. William Harrison will this week begin work on thtee dwellings on East Carson street. Additional Points in Realty. J. E. THEY WERE THE ONLY REDEEMING FEATURE OF THE MARKET. Other Securities Fluctuate Between High and Drooping Prices Insignificant Con cessions Sladn From Last Week's Prices A Small Yolnnae of Hnsiness. New York. May 3L Tho stock market to day was a quiet one, but a few stocks, as usual of late, displayed marked animation, and In all cases among the railroad list such activity mt acCoTflpanted by ma terially lower prices. Thfl'market displayed a rallying power when left to itself, and only the apathy of outside operators enabled the bears to make the material Impression they did In a few of the leaders. The market, however, declined slowly, and notwithstanding the drives made at Louisville and Nashville and Bnrlington, other active stocks, with but two. excep tions, show this Evening only Insignificant concessions from last week's figures or sllsht gains. The principal factor" In pro ducing the decline as the strength of the loreign exchange market, which at present Invariably gives rise to the cry of imme diate gold exports. There was a great deal of pressure upon Beading In the .early trading, but it was well maintained, and the effort to make an Impression upon It was soon given up, though on a smaller volume of business In the last two hours It yielded more rapidly. The only really strong point In tho market was the Industrial group, and while the Cordage stocks failed to increase their late gains. Sugar and the Lead shares tiere prominent for the advances scored on a comparatively Hplit trade. The .general list alter a firm nnd higher opening made some slight further advance, but tho drive t Beading in the early dealings and against Louisville and Nashville, and Burlington later, checked the upward tendency, and before noon prices, as a rule, were a shade below those of the opening. A Tally In the after noon was followed In tho last hour by an other drooping spell, and 'the close was quiet but heavy at the lowest prices. The os in Louisville and Nashville is V, per cent, and in Burlington 1J. but nil other changes are confined to fractional amounts and a few slight gains were seen. Ballroad bonds, us usual f late, displayed none of the weakness seen In some stock, but with a very widely distributed business some issues showed uiaiked activity, and a firm temper was kept, up throughout the session. The transactions reached $2,256,000. The total sales of stocks to-day were 2.10,443 shares, including Atchison, 14,053: Chicago Gas, 3.e:0; Delaware.
