THE PITTSBURG' DISPATCH, MONDAY, MAT 30, 1892. THE TRADE OUTLOOK. Cold, Wet Weather an Adverse Feat ure to the froduco Trade. A REACTION TO THE BOOH IN CORN. The Bide and Calfskin Market Weak at the Kecent Decline. CANNED MEATS IN ACTIVE DEMAXD Office of Tije Dispatch. rnrsBUKG, Saturday, May 23. ( The feature of the week past in produce lines lias been the stead)- decline of dairy products. Market' nre glutted with country butter, and all grades under fancy are sell ing Just for what they will brine A fair quality has sold during the past day or two at 10c por pound, and the best is selling in a Jobbinsr way at 15c per pound. The quality of Ohio cliecae coming to our muiketsof late is for the most part poor. Trices are fully lc less than thev were a week aso. Home raised garden stun" is un usually backward o ins to the cool, cloudy wenther which has predominated all the month of May. The days of bright sunshine hare been very rare for the month, and garden stuff is fully three weeks behind time. Old vesotablcs are near their end for this season. The cold, wet weather of the week hat proved a check to egg and poultry supplier, and in both lines markets are firm at an advance on prices of a week ago. Jn Cereal Twines. In the eirly part of the week shell corn was on the boom and prices were sharply advanced. The boom has subsided and prices are now back to where they were a week a so. All bull movements in ceieal lines seem destined to have a short career since the great yield of 1S9L It is evident that there is an abundance in the land, and the last advance in prices calls the stuff to the front. A multitude of fore handed tanners, who are able to c irry their products, withold them from markets in tins era of low prices. Bat once there is an advance in prices, there annearstobe an abundance of stuff offered. The cereal situ ation is lun as it has Deen all the season in Javorofthe buyer. Canned Meats. The rittsburg lepresentative oroneof the Chicago firms had this to say of trade in this line: "Oiirordeis for canned corned beef ale away bejond ourpowerto All. We have 5,000 cases old ahead, and were unable to secme 20 per cent or this amount this week. The demand from Europe has been so lars:e thi eaon that the home otders cannot be filled. I ordeied 5.000 cases, a few days ago, and leceived onl 500 cases, lor the reason that only th.it amount could be spared. There i a gi eat demand this season for 1-Bs can, instead of 2 a cans, which have hrre tojore had the call. With the exception of corned be"f-ne:no able to fill orders, but trauc is very active all along the line. II lor and Calfskins. Trade in this line has not been so thor oughly demoralized for years as it is at the present time. The shutdown of Xew Eng land shoeleather tanneries for June and July hat, utv much lessened demand for iiides ana calf-kins, and markets here are exceedingly dull at thedecline noted a week aso. While we do not change our price list, some of the tanners wll not bny at theso prices. Sheepskins are fairly steady at quo tations. Footwear in Ronton. The following from the Boston Herald will indicate the situ ition of the boot and shoe trade at the head center of this industry: Tne market on boot and shoes, fiom the standpoint of manufacturers, is rather quiet. But the position is well sustained, with a tendency toward greater firmness, by leason of the position leather has taken and the prospects or still greater firmness in that market. At present there are not a gieat many otden being tiken, thouzh there are some small orders tor summer goods. In a few instances they are suffi cient to keep ceitiin parts of factories de voted to immediate order work busy up to date. But this sot t of trade is not expected to hold out much longer, of course. In some instances there is already considerable pres sure lor the delivery of fall goods, and man ufacture! save tin nun them out and ship ping them about as fast as possible. Asa whole, manufaotntersaiebusy. The lack or a heavy -mullein trade is, of course, being felt to some extent, and for thisieason thcie are less goods being made this season than would otherwise he the case. But it is the endcavorofiiianufacturcis to make up the lack of Southern trade by extra exertion in other marKets, and this has made trade in sections more prosperous than the South seems overdone, Ii leather continues to In ciease in fitmnet, on tne advent of another seaon manufacturer of boots and shoes will find themselves under the necessity of increasing prices TOR PRESERVING L0G3. A. New Blethod for Impregnating Them With Zinc Chloride. The process of preserving logs is very rapid, and has the additional advantage of oeing applicable to the timber as soon as it is felled. A zinc chloride solution, which has a specific gravity of 1.01, is forced into the thick of the log by a force pump. To this end an Iron disc of suitable diameter and furnished with a cutting rim is forced into the end of the log and secured by clamps. The preparatory work ior impreg nating each log takes lrora three to four minutes. When a pressure of two or three atmospheres lus been maintained at the thick end of the log for a few minutes the sap begins to exude at the opposite end, and when this is followed by a weak solution of zinc chloride the operation has beeu com pleted. About two gallons and a half of the solution are required per cubic foot of timber treated. One disadvantage of the process which has not yet been overcome is that it does not distribute the solution so uniformly as some other methods. A Csefal Indention. New Orleans Picayune. t A bricklayer of Cnicago ha? invented a parbage box, whose general adoption would do away with one of the most unsightly and offensive nuisances that disfigure the street of our cities. The invention is a round, gal vanized receptacle to be placed underground and covered with a movable iron lid. When raised into the garbage cart by means of a small, portable crane attached to the cart, the bottom drops and empties the contents, when the box can be quickly and easily re placed in its unseen receptacle.
