GOOD EHEEP iXD STVI.NE IN DEMAND Office of The DisrATcn. ) PiTTBurKG, Wednesday, May 25. There have been all told 72 carloads of cattle on sale this week at the East Liberty yards, against 70 loads last week and SO loads the week before. About two thirds of this week's offerings were from Chicago. The average quality showed some improvement over last week's. There were no heavy prime beeves on 6ale, and there is no longer any demand for this grade in our local yards. Buyers were present in fair force on Monday morning, and markets opened strong and active at last week's prices on all desirable butcher prades, and steady all along the line. Good feeders weighing from 1.100 to 1.200 lbs were particularly active. The hishest price paid was for 12 head of South ern Ohio boeves, which averaged 1,458 lbs. Tho price paid wa$t70. With this excep tion 54 45 wa the top of the market. All offerings found readv sale, ana there were scarcely any loft in the pens this morning. Fresh cows were in liberal supply, and quality was In tho main low. The few choice on sale were promptly taken at out side figures, $45 00 being the top ol the mar ket. The run of veal calves was mnch lighter this week than last, and pricos were ad vanced fully 50c per cwt. Sales were re ported as high as $5 75. whereas in the early part of the month the top of the market was under $4 75. There have been about 35 car loads of ho:rs on sale this week and markets were stcadv at aoout the same price as a week ago. Top price was $5 10. Good sheep were in good demand at a shade better prices than last week, while common stock wasneak and slow. Spring Iambs are off 1652c f? It from last week's prices. A LIto Stock film's Review. Following is the report of the week's transactions bv Holmes, Briggs A Co.: V. e report 63 cars cattle on sale Monday, 42 loads being Irom Chicago and 20 loads lrom Ohio and Indiana. The quality was about the same as last week with the ex ception of two or three loads fiom Southern Ohio, which were good to prime and sold about 20 cents higher than the best last w eck. The attendance of bnvers was about the same as usual, and about all thn offer ings were disposed ot before 12 o'clock. Since Monday receipts have been light and everything sold at steady pricos. There was a liberal number of cons on the mar ket, and all but good lresh cows were dull sale at a shade lower prices than last week. Veal calves wore active at 25 to 40 cents ad vance owing to light run and good demand. The supuly of hogs on Monday was a little short of demand and an active trade lol lowed with prices 10 to 15 cents hotter than the close of last week. Since Monday re ceipts have been light and Monday's prices held 'tiong witch everything told. Thero were 25 loads of sheep on sale Monday, which met with ready sale at 10 to 15 cents per hundred higher than Monday ot last week. There were nine loads flesh arrivals on Tuesday and all sold at fall Monday's prices. As long as the sheep market in the'East con tinues good we can count oSI good prices here. A BIG DEAL ON WILIE AYEKDE. More Light on Kecent Transactions in the Highland Park District. A SCRAMBLE IN DEAD HOGS. Excitement and a IJulgo in Provisions the Feature on the Chicago Board Tho Strength In Grain Helps the Balls Wheat and Corn Uninteresting. CHICAGO A frantic scramble in the pro vision pit to-day outrivaled anything done by the wheat and corn crowds. For two or threo days tho local scalping trade have played for a break in prices, and while creating a short interest failed to depress prices to any extent. The chief ob stacle apneared to be the firm ad vance in the grain markets. . When the large receipts of 39,000 hogs this morning failed to break prices at the yards and the packers showed a disposition to continue the buying of ribs, thero was alarm among shorts. Then tho grain mar kets made a quick bulge, and this started the scalpers to cover. The excitement was intense and prices went up sharply. The advance amounted to 42c in pork, 20c in short ribs and 12c in lard. Later in the day, when the grain markets weakened, there was a setback in provisions also. Pork closed about l'Kc over yesterday; ribs, 12 15c, higher; lard, 2c up. Business in wheat was only moderate. Tho opening was weaker and prices c lower: then became stronger, and prices ral lied c: again eased off, declining Jc; fluc tuated slightly, and closed about Jc lower than yesterday. The lower opening was duo to brizhter and warmer weather here and lower cnblo advices. At the decline a sharp demand developed, a cood manv buying orders being received from the Southwest, based, it was olaimed, on unlavorable re ports of the growing crop. Prices rallied sharply, bnt when an effort was made to realize prices declined and the ndvanoe was entirely lost. Onerators ai e not inclined to do much at presont, except in a small speculative way, there being a disposition to await developments. The altered killlns off of the Hatch bill was one of the bull ar guments to-day, -n hile a strong bear card wns the rumor of an important failure in Lon don. Corn transactions wcie.in the main, for local account, and on the improved weather first trades were at c decline. The market, however, soon void np ljc on dis patches speaking or clouds and in sympathy with the bulge in wheat and piovisions, but did not hold, declining soon altcrward iVi IJfte: changed some and closed with July JsKc lower. May was firmer at 65i6Sc. but wa- seldom mentioned. Tho zrcat Quantity or "dry" corn piedictcd for this market this week has not yet made its appearance. Oats opened about Jc lower, improved Jgc, and then lost nearly all of the advance, following wheat and corn closely all the time. The shorts in the current month were either all covered or satisfied to await de velopments. The leading futures ranged as rollows. as cor rected by John M. The Hutchinson property, corner of Fifth avenue and Masters alley, lot 20.6x30, and a three-story brick building, changed owner ship yesterday through the agency of Black & Baird. The price could not be ascertained, as the firm declined under instructions from the principals to give publicity to details at present, but it probably breaks all former records on central business property. Several other inter esting events have ocenrred in this lively quarter which will come to the surface be fore long. The purchaser of the Fite prop erty, a short ilistance rom the Howley tract, lor fCo,000 has been a close secret for several weeks, but it can now be stated that Chief Bigelow is the man. He saw that owners were marking up values, and con cluded to secure the property before it made another bulge. It is understood he has or will oiler it to the city at cost This, as well as part of the Howley tract, is needed to perfect the park boundaries on the south and southwest. A Deal In Acres. A deal in acreage in the "Wilkinsburg dis trict was disclosed yesterday by a citizen of Edgewood. Soma Manipulation of Grangers for Lower Prices Increased Interest In Richmond and West Point The General Business Daller bnt Stroncer. Nkw Yoex, May 25 The stock market to day was still less animated, but tuoro was a gratifying change In tho temper of tho deal ings from weakness to strength, the demand from the shorts causing the placing of prices In the general list upon a materially higher plane, which even the con tlnued manipulation of the Grangers for lower prices was not able to restrain. The speculation, in fact, while still almost wholly professional, shows more and more strength, which comes from the lact that stooks are held in strong hands, which, as long as the present rates for money are maintained, are Impregnable. Balds and drives of all sorts, while producing for the moment lower prices according to their severity, bring no long stocks to market. It has become a noted fact that prices, of late, recover on a much smaller volume of busi ness than they decline. The market to-day was aotlve in spots. The early bear manipulation of the Grangers, the increased inteiest in the Riohmond nnd West Point securities, owing to tho ray of hope offered by the Strong Thomas plan, whioh resulted in a sharp ad vance in the stocks of the company, and the spurt among the Coal shares In the after noon, were ino principal leaiures oi tne uay. Tho strong undeitone, however, was mraked at all times, even when the. prices of the Grangers were declining. Opening prices, under the influence of a further demand lrom the foreigners and the shorts, were all from to 1 per cent better than the finals of last night, and turtber Im provement was made during the first hour, which brought prices np to a level which was in but few caes surpassed during the rest of the day. The check was given to tho ad vance by the drive at the Grangers, in which both St. Paul and Bock Island wero specially prominent for weakness: but the limit of this reached the entire market after the slight reaction, moved forward again, though the progress was slow lor the re malnder of the day. The special feature at this time was the rapid rise in Corda.ro pteferred. which suc ceeded in almost catching up with the com mon before the close ot the day; but later the Coal stocks again assumed the leader ship in the market. Union Pacific was, also, a strong feature, and the losses in the Gran gers were then made up with something to spare. The market closed with a spurt of activity under renewed covering, and very strong at the highest prices of the day. The total sales of stocks to-day were 314,638 shares, including: Atchison, 18,2!K); Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western, 3,710; Erie, 10,286; Louisville and Nashville, 6,110; Man hattan, 3,313: Missouri i-acinc, B,2bu: Nortn Ameiican, 40: New Jersey Central, 8.450; Northern Pacific preferred, 15,300: New Eng land, 3,320; Reading, 69,500; Richmond and West Point, 12,880; St. Paul, 21,605; Union Pa cific, 9,100; Wcstem Union, 5.606.
