The Iron Age will ray to-morrow: The production of pig iron has been still further cut down1 during the past month. The condition of this branch of trade is shown in the following table, in which comparison is made between May 1 and April 1: as rgs r,- Z r : : "' : s: : s ; s : : S z s ?! The point is worthy of careful consideration, however, that nearly all con sumers are now carrying light stocks in the yards, which is always the case on a falling market. The visible supply of pig iron throughout the country may therefore not be greatly in excess of the usual quantity. The Clouds Fall to Drenlc Away. Re ports from all the leading trade centers in- rltnita n pnntintinnpfi ff ih flpnrpssinn in u... .. -.-,.. - liijr iron, with prices ruling in buyers' favor. Inquiries are increasing, however, on every side, and the probabilities are that many heavy consumers will at an early 'ay conclude that they are running no risk in covering their requirements for the re mainder of the vear. Steel plates have been sold at very low prices by Pittsburg for delivery in Eastern Pennsylvania. Although the steel rail trade is generally reported quiet, the sales by all the mills during April ran up to a trifle over 100,000 tons. The foreign markets are reported by cable from London, as follows: Warrants gener allv have declined. A small business was done early in the week at firm prices, but reports of a probable early settlement gave courage to the "bear" interest later on, and free selling brought about a decline to 40s 3d for Scotch, 37s 3Jd for Cleveland, and 47s 7d lor hematite. A Heavy Drcrease in Stocks. Stocks in warrant stores have undergone a further decreae, the lat reports showing a total of 407,000 tons Scotch and 98,000 tons Cleveland, indicating continued heavy withdrawals. Exports last month were 61,000 tons against 64.000 tons in April, 1891. Pig tin has ruled irregular, finally show ing a net advance for the week of about 10s on a moderate volume of business. Outside speculation is quiet, but trade demand Is good and supplies are light, giving holders decided advantage. C6pper has improved about 15s during the week. In tinplate there has been a fair business, but not sufficient to relieve the dull appearance that has existed for some time past. Fair orders reported placed in Swansea tor liL-ht Bessemer sauares at 12s. and all sizes at" J2s 3d. Lower ternes also are in somewhat better request at 21s 9d for doubles. Black plates are quoted at 8 10sl0 per ton, with good demand. Ex ports last month were 39,000 tons, of which 31,000 tons went to the United States. The movement in April, 1891, was 52,000 tons and 45,000 tons respectively. Stocks in Swansea amount to 243,000 boxes, against 205,000 boxes last year. 0 LIVE STOCK MARKETS. Bearish at I he Start Corn a Fraction Higher Everything Else Unchanged. CHICAGO The professional sellers and scalpers wore against wheat all day until nenr the close, when they.cave up the fight anil turned to part of their short sales. The bullish news from England, France and India and the stubborn strength or the May option locally had much to do with the change of front. Compared with last night, 5fny whoat till evening is e up, and J illy c. Corn Is c higher; oats, pork and ribs aro practically unchanged. There was no heavy trading In nny of the pits. Tho delivery last evening of 600,000 bushels of wheat, said to come lrom elevator peo ple, was expected to depress th &' ay price at least. Instead, May sold at y, to a premium over July. One explanation was that the wheat which the elevator men sent around was taken In by commission houses which had previously bought It In the pit on orders from the same men who were sending it out, presumably for Its effect upon tho maiket. Tho weather continues to hnve considerable effectnponthe market, if not the controlling influence. Holders of corn at tho opening weto afraid ofasl'imp In case of luight weather, and shorts were afraid of a bulge In caso more rains were leportcd. This made a sensitive marker. The Weather Bureau showed rains pretty general again over Kruisas, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois eailv. This started tne m-trket at an advance. Then a Price Current dispatch was circulated, saying the late rains had not as yet seilously prejudiced corn crop prospects. This caused some sell ing and a drop With wheat. Local operators who got short trying to start a break in July under (3c were quick to huy on a little rally, and tlicro was a good reoovery later. Oats, after opening Ann, weakened with the other cereals on fine weather reports, but eventually recoveied. Provisions were oxtremely dull and the fluctuations Insignificant. Office Buildings in Pittsburg Slowly Gaining in Popularity. CELLARS STILL IN BAD EEPDTE. local Etocks Well Sustained, V ith Tractions as the Main Issues. OFFICE AND STREET NEWS AND GOSSIP It has sot been many years since it wa3 next to impossible to let upstairs rooms in Pittsburg for business purposes, especially of a retail character, and this prejudice still prevails to a considerable extent, but is being gradually overcome by the scarcity of business stands. People are glad to get rooms almost anywhere. Office buildines were suggested and brought into use by large corporations to enable them to concentrate their interests. Such was their beginning in Pittsburg. Expedition and economy were the results. The idea was adopted by others, and soon became popular, especially in districts of contracted business area or where land was held at exorbitant figures. It needed no words to prove that It was cheaper to build in the air than on the ground. This is a strong argument for office buildings in Pittsburg. Central real estate is not only expensive but is in limited supply. In a talk with Mr. D. P. Black on this subject yesterday, he said: "Office build ings are growing in popularity in this city. People are being educated to appreciate their advantages. If all the office buildings here had been built at once they would have been failures, at least lor a long time. But going up one by one at intervals of a year or more, the people became accustomed to them. Pittsburg can easily stand one large office building a year; more would crowd tne market. There are between 25 and 30 exclusively office buildings in this city with elevator service, and all of them are lull or nearly so. Several others are under consideration, but it will be a year or two before any of them will materialize. Cellars are in as much disfavor as ever. It is difficult to rent them for anything except barber shops and restaurants. This is another prejudice whih is peculiar to Pittsburg. In many cities cellars are in demand for high-grade business, both wholesale and retail. Yesterday! Building Permits. Yesterday was another good day in the building line. Eleven permits were issued lor 24 improvements, aggregating in esti mated value 59,475. Local Influences Only A fleet Frlcfs Chi cago Gas Singled Out by the Bears Booking Valley, Manhattan and a Few Industrial Follow Bonds Active. Nkw York, May 12. The stock market to day was still extremely narrow, notwith standing that the dealings extended to a large number of stocks, for the interest was centered in a fewshares which were aflected by special causes. The improved feeling in London was not so apparent to-day. and the operations of the foreigners. Including the arbitrage houses, were insignificant, while all the animation seen during the day wns the direct lesult of bearish operations by tho looul contingent, outside of such stocks as Manhattan, Hocking Valley and the In dustrials. The general market was heavy at times under the influence of the attacks on the few stocks mentioned, but the tendency was undoubtedly to ndvnnce had the market been left tcako its natural course, and, as it was, the changes in quotations weie in all eases Insignificant throughout the day. The opening was fairly steady and prices Imme diately advanced In the absence of pressure, though the mnrkot wns dull: but the pres suio was soon sunnlled. nnd concessions were made, Chicago Gas leading, though its loss did not amountto much until late in the afternoon, when other stocks joined it, and the whole list was given a weak appearance. Hocking Valley, Manhattan and some of the Industrials, however, were even stionger than those stocks were weak, and substan tial gains were made in them, though tho general weakness of the market in the after noon told on their advances and a partial reaction occurred. The great feature of the late dealings was thoienowalof tho attack upon Northern Pacific preferred, and on largely increased business it fell nn-ay over 1 per cont. The rest of the list followed, and the close was Suiot but weak nt the low est prices of tho ay In most cases, thought the list, vlb a rule, wasbnly slightly below the opening prices. The final changes include losses of 1 per cont in Rock Island, 1 In Northern Pacific preferred and IJi in Union Pacific, while Hocking Valley is np 1; Manhattan, and Cordage, 1. The total sales of stocks to-day were 229,486 shares. Including Atchison, 14.100; Chicago Gas, 19.085; Erie. 6,600; Hocking Valley, 10,313; Manhattan, 11.612: Xoitliern Pacific pie ferred, 34,240: Reading, 20,400; Richmond and West Point, 3,200; St. Paul, 8,210; Union Pacific, 3,910. Raili oad bonds were still active and in the main fltm, but there were signs of realiza tions in the list, and in the ense of Atchison Incomes positive weakness developed in the late trading and those bonds are to-night 1 per cent lower nt 55. The trading reached $2 236,000, of which Atchison Incomes fur nished $218,000. The rest ot the market gen erally scoied slight gains, but no decided tendenoy In prices was to bs scon.
