SHOE LEATHER MANUFACTURERS In the Fast Contemplating a Curtailment of Production. HIDES AXD CALFSKINS ARE QUITE DULL Orricc or The Dispatch, ) 1'iTTsncito, Saturday, May 7. In lines of general produce tlio market features of the week pnst hare been the heavy receipts of tropical fruits and dairy jiroduots and tho declining prices in both lines. Since last Monday tliere Uavo been, re ceived in this market fully 40 carloads of liananas. One llrm alone received 22 cars. Very little of this stock was left at the close oi the week, though large quantities of low grade and over-ripe stock wore unloaded at the lowest prices of the season. Pineapples have also been received In very large quantity, and only the best are in request. As tho season is here when dalry produet most abound, prices are on tho de cline, anil quotations on creatneiy butter ate fully 3c per pound below prices of a week auo, with a propect of still further leduction the ock to come. In anticipa tion of another drop, dealer are leportcd as cutting prices in the past few Uajs. In Cereal Linen. It will be -een by leierence to home market column that receipts of grain and liny have been unusually large lor tho week. There i no longer the scarcity of bay there lai been of late, and piices have found a lower level. The improvement of grazing hit no doubt had an effect in putting a check to tile irn ard movement of hay. Flour a 'd mill.'eed are slow as ever. At pieent price of n heat there 1 no margin of profit to the flouring mills of this citv. "viid si representative of one of our flouring mills: "Either Iloui must go up or vi heat muv. come down. We cannot pay the market piice of u neat and come out even on Hour. It is onlv a question o: short time when tho consumer must paj moic lor his breadstuff." Hide nnd leather. Advices from Xew England indicato that tanners o' shoe leather oontempiato a shut down of 30 to 63 days, owing to extremely lowpuccs. Stock has of late been a drus on tho market and prices are so low that profits are well nigh obliterated. Tho movement to curtail production is designed to elevate the piice ot leather and at the same time reduce the puce of hi les nnd callskins. As a result of this proposed cur tailment I production, the hide and calf ekin market ha- been very dull and slow for the week pa-t. While our quotations are unchanged, the seller is much more eager llian the lmyei, and markets have not been mi loH :ui tune this summer as thev have been for the week past. Up to May. calf skins were in active demand, and all offered lound ready -ale at prices quoted. Now calf skins aie quiet and slow with all else in bide line-, sheep-kin aie fairly steady. Sugar Mot Far Behind in Activity and Strength Heading Lacks I.I re, and Lackawanna Is Raided llown The Hunk Statement Unfavorable Bonds Firm. New York, May 7. The stock market to day was quiet and In the main strong, but it was as narrow us at any time during tho week, presenting few features of interest nnd the general list showing only slight fluctuations. The great feature of tho day was the extraordinary animation in Omaha common, which rose to first place in the de.tlings, while leaching higher prices than in many months. The stock lose fromSIJJ last night to 02. but a portion of this was lost, while the preferred stock was stub bornly held at the highest point. Heading was active, as usual, but dis played no vitality, nnd was traded in within narrow limits with the lost of the market. The Industrials were tho most prominent feature after Omaha, and a substantial rally in Sugar, owing principally to the covering of shorts, was helped by a rise in Chicago Gas, which carried its price above 80 on tho expectation of increased dividends in the future. A bear drive was made at Lackawanna, which was supposed to bo to shako out enough stock to enablo the operators Inter ested to cover their shorts, which seems at Drcsent to be tho object of most of the raids. Prices yield readily to theso attacks, owing to the lack or speculative interest in the market; but stocks aie so tightly held that the buying to covcrimmediately sends them back again, nnd little is gained. The issue o. the bank statement which was an unfavorable exhibit, hud some in fluence in creating some reaction in the late dealings and many of the list were carried down below the opening flguies. The mar ket never rallied, but closed heavy, with most stocks within the smallest (tactions of last night's fltrures. Sugar, however, was up 1J. and Omaha 1J, while the losses weie in significant. A Saloon to Be Built Near General Alger's nousa and Right in the Bear or a Church Tho Deacons Moved Too Slowly to Prevent It, Detroit, May 8. Specie. The new Union depot, now Hearing completion on Fort street, is near the residences ol General Alger, J. F. Joy, the widow of Zach Chandler and other wealthy persons, and directly opposite is the Fort Street Methodist Church. All the available ground in the vicinity being occupied by elegant residences or massive buildings of manufacturing concerns, it seemed probable that there would be n" saloons within two blocks of the station, and the wealthy resi dences of Fort street felt that while it was bad enough to have the railroad terminus thrust upon them, they would escape the cheap saloons. Directly back of the Fort Street Churoh there is a small lot, 30x75 feet, which for years ha been fenced in with the church property and has been supposed to belong to the church. The trustees ot the church, however, knew better, and feared that the land would be grabbed for saloon purposes. They set about to lease the laud, built a small store and run a drugstore under one of the deacons' names, in order to meet the expense of the lease. Accordingly the dea cons called on Captain Dickinson, executor of the estate to which the land belonged, and talked over the matter. They held two or three meetings, and finally decided to lease the land. Several weeks elapsedj and when they called on Captain Dickinson attain they found that Andrew Naley and Joseph Henry, barkeepers, had discovered that the 30 feet did not belong to the church, and, without waiting, had closed a ten years' lease of the land at 800 a year. A saloon will be erected on the land, and within 25 feet of the pulpit the bar will be in operation. fWWmWMMtHWMWW ; "CTOBTH A GUINEA A BOS." ;' I TASTELESS-EFFECTUAL; I FOR A '! ii Taken as directed these famous Pills will , i prove marvel Ions restoratives to oil onfeebled i by the above or kindred diseases. 25 Conts a Box? Mrs. Shoemaker's Experience in the United Mates and Canada. A letter was received at this office a week or more ago. gays the Detroit A'ews, which contained statements of so positive and surprising a nature that It was thought best to make a thorough Investi gation hefore publishing It. The writer of the letter is Mrs. S. Shoemaker, who now lives atElkton, Mich., but whose home was for nearly twenty years in the village of Duart, Ontario. A thorough investigation has been made, and It can be positively stated that the circumstances, as she describes them, are true. They arc vouched for as facts by J. C. McDonald, Esq., Justice of the peace, and C. Elfonl, post master, both highly esteemed citizens of Duart. Mrs. Shoemaker's letter Is published as she wrote It, and debcncs attention. Elktox, Mien., May 5, 1302. To the Editor of the 3s'ews: Much as I dislike the notoriety of seeing my name in print, I feel forced to let the world know of the remarkable things that have happened to me. Forfourteenyearsmyllfe has been one of misery. My nerves were completely shattered, and at times it seemed as though sleep had gone from me for ever. For four years I did not have one good night's sleep. 3Iy appetite was variable and food did not digest. My heart was so weak that at the least noise or excitement It almost stopped beat ing. Life had no pleasure for me, sad and gloomy forebodings wero always present. I was troubled fearfully with femalo weaknesses, dizziness, nervous heaJactie, poor eyesight, constipation, trembling of the limbs, and so many other griev ances that my pen cannot write them. I tried miny kinds of remedies until I had lost faith In all medicine. When I was in the depths of despair I happened to hear of l'alne's celeiy compound. Trom what I heard I was Inspired with fresh courage and hope, and I commenced using It. By the time I had taken a dozen bottles 1 was once more strong, able to do lny own work on a rarm. To-day I can eat anything from pork to pastry without Its disagreeing with me. Everyone In this village knows how I safferea and how Palne's celery compound cured me. It changed: me from a helpless, despairing woman to my present state of health and strength. I hope you will publish this letter and spread as widely as possible the knowledge of a means that will bring health and happiness to homes where sickness and suffering make life a burden. Yours truly, Mas. S. Shoemaker. Investigations prove that Mrs. Shoemaker's statement is vouched for by many or the best citi zens In Huron county. Charles Dornan, a drug, gist In ElKlon. told the -Yetcff representative that Mrs. shoemaker's statement fas true, and that Paiuc's celery compound had effected many almost as marvelous cures in that section. The discovery of Taine's celery compound has certainly marked an era In medical science. It Is a pure food for nerves, brain and blood, and gives strength and vigor to those who use it.
