THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH." THURSDAY, MAT 5, 189a 11 I LITE STOCK KEVIEW. Receipts of Cattle at East Liberty Un usually Large and A DECLINE NOTED IN ALL GRADES. At Western Stock Centers Higher Prices Than Last Week Euled. SHEEP AND SWINE WEAK AXD LOWEE Omci r The Dispatch, ( Pittsburg. VTedxesday. Hay . There have been all told close to 90 car loads of cattle on sale at the East Liberty yards this week, an excess of 25 cars over the late average. Quality of offerings was better than it has been for months past. Buyers were on hand in smaller iorce than usual, and, In spite of the improvement in quality, markets were very heavy and slow at a decline from last week's prices rang-, ing from 15c to 30c per cwt. At all "Western points prices of cattle were higher this week than last, and Pittsburg drovers were left out in the cold. The highest price paid here this week was fi Co, and the same grade could a week ago find ready buyers at fi 85 and posslblymore. Freih cows were In larger supply till week than last, ana markets were steadv for cood stock and weak on common. The supply of calves for the week raied very little from ltt woet. The total so lar has ben above 1.S00 head and is expected to be above 2,000 befoie tho week Is out. Top price to-day was c per pound. Hogs Market opened Monday with 23 lends on sole, and the total for two weekB lias been a little above 30 load. Top price on Monday was $190 and this morning $4 80. Sheep and lambs wevo in supply teona doicand, and prices declined a lull quarter on some grades. At the decline maikets were drassy. A Live Stock Finn's Review. Follnwincis repoitoftue week's transac tion as furnished by Holui, Brigjrs & Co.: Thero were 80 loads of cattle on sale at the openin; or the market on Monday morning and 5 loud arrived through the day. Tho attendance of tinyers was scarcely np to the average, which gave u bad outlook, and tiie opening was very dull at ISgCOc decline lrom the opening prices of ame day last week on the desirable grades. Other grades wereslon nleat 2530c decline, and as tho hiv advanced price- grow weaker until the cloe. when there were fiee offerings at 25 30e decline. At the close there were a num ber of loads unsold and carried over until Tuesday. On Tuedav there was no itu- i)i oveinent in pi ices. There were some 6 or8 loads shipped East in first hand. This o consider only due to an oversupply for de mand for this week. We hope to see a re action nest week and stronger prices for next Gil davs on good corn- ed stock. Vo quote prime to extra steers at $4 504 CO; good. $1 23Q4 40; fair. $4 O04 10; common, $3 503 75: eou s and bulls, $2 003 75; stock-rr-. !2 503 50; fresh, cows ana springers, $20040 per head. lios Receipts of bos on Jlonday were fair and demand was slow at C10c decline lrom the close or lntt week. Since Monday receipts have been light, and as the quality w as bad and demand lisht trade is very dull at a shade lower prices than the opening. As Chicago and other Western markets con tinue dull and lower we cannot look lor any improvement hero this week. Weqnote best select at $4 854 90: good mixed, U SO; best Jorkers, $4 7uig4 S3; common Yorkers and pigs, $4 504 15. Receipts ot sheep on Monday were 26 cars, which was quite enough lor the demand, as Eastern bujers refused to handle them short of at least 25c lower pricos than last week on the bettor grades, while more un desirable grades suffered a los3 or S010o per 100. WHEAT LOSES STRENGTH. Everything In Its F&Tor In the Forenoon The Available Supply Deorease'd Corn Very Strong Oats Quiet and Firm Pro visions Quiet and Steady. CHICAGO There was not much life In the wheat market to-day. Trade wasnar low and largely professional, and while there was a good deal of bull news the mar ket was extremely dull most of the day, and while holding rather flrm did not show any decided upward impulse. This was at tributed cntlrelv to the narrowness of speculation nnd the absence of outsldo sup port. The crop news was still in favor of the friends of wheat. Cables were generally flrm and some advances were recorded, while nearly all domestic markets -were somewhat higher. All this gave the market a rather flrm start, shorts being rather good buyers. July opened c higher, at 81Jc. and sold up to 8IJic. 1 ho market weakened to 81lio. From this prices strengthened to and held steadily around 8IKc for a long timo. Durinc; the last hour tiiide was dull, price weakening to 81Jc: bnt on the stronger closing cables there was an advance to 81Jc. ThU appre ciation, however, was lost near tho close, nnd the market closed easy at the lowest price of the day, 8tc. JirmUlrtrC report sbowod a decrease during the w eefc of 2,318. 001 bushels in the avallablo supply east of tho Rockies and nbnuc 1,930,000 bushels on both coasts, but it bad very littlo effect on the market. Corn showed decided strength, the weather conditions pointing to delay in planting. There i- a considerable short interest, and in view of the unfavorable outlook there was a general disposition to cover, but tho onerings were limited, .uay was moro strongly affected than July. It opened with nn advance of J4C at 42cand sold to 43c, closing at 43c; J ulv started Jf5c higher at 40K41c, and did riot go higher than tho out side price at the start, closing nnchnngod. u.-us wore quiec one rainor nrm, in sym- pa thy with corn.and also influenced some by bad wp-ather. Hog products were quiet and steady. There was some strength early, but later trade became dull and prices easier. The close for pork was at medium figures, and at 10c over yesterday's last figures. The Singer Property at Wilkinsburg Changes Hands Finally. DETAILS OF THE TRANSACTION General Features of the Market Showing Confidence of Investors. THE TREND OP MONET AND SPECULATION The largest transaction in real estate ever made In the "Wilkinsburg district was brought to a conclusion yesterday. For months the Singer property has been an ob ject ot interest to investors and subdivide rs, and a number of ofiers for it have been made, but none of them were up to the mark. Believing there was money in the property, if judiciously handled, a short time ago a syndicate was formed for its purchase, headed by a former public school principal, and an offer of $135,000 made. This was accepted and yesterday they ac quired full possession. The property is among the finest in the county. It consists of about 30 acres, with an elegant stone mansion, the view from which takes in a large stretch of highly improved territory, beautiful valleys and gentle slopes. While the object of the purchasers has not been divulged, It is understood they will subdivide it into large lots for high-class rural homes. The price, 4,500 an acre, is considered reasonable in view of the superior character of the property and the high state of improve ment to which it has been brought. Characteristics of the Market. Real estate is of perennial interest. Al most every tenant hones to become a pro prietor, and watches the market with ab sorbing interest. The situation is one of real strength. "While there is an absence of speculative activity there is no lack of investment interest. There would be more sales if owners would modify their views and meet buye'rs halt way. But there is a good side to high prices. They show con fidence in the futnre of the city. It is fortunate for home-seekers that there is a large visible supply of residence property to keep prices within reach of modest purses. Fancy prices are asked in many cases for choice building sites. A rich man fixes upon a particular spot where he wants to establish his home, and is will ing to pay roundly for it, even if it is sur rounded on every side by property quite as desirable and much cheaper. Unless indications be misleading, the market will improve as the season pro gresses. Good w eather and dry roads are favorable to activity. Brokers arc hopeful; owners arc firm. Their ideas of values are as exalted as they were six months or a year ago. There is no sign of weakness in any part of the line. i'cstenlar's Building Permits. Yesterday was another good day in tho building line. Thirteen permits were is sued for 16 improvements, aggregating S70, 625. Special Features of Trade. Tho vote of Wilkinsburg In favor of issu ing bonds for $153,0JO for sewer purposes raises tho borough indebtedness to $200,000. Thoro is a movoment on foot to make Eighth street full width from Liberty to Penn. With the Harper building in rains, this is an auspicious time for the improve ment! Certainly better communication be tween these streots is needed. The move ment is sanctioned by a largo number of business mon. A large number of buildings on Penn ave nuo are being overhauled and brightened up. In almost every squaroa new iront is being put in, and In some cases two or three. W. F. Eichenlanb is building a three-story brick warehouse on Butler street, near Tbirty-flrth, adjoining his present place of business. Somo Animation and Firmness in the Early Stock Dealings Arbltrago Purchases of Other Cities An Upward Movement in Cordage Final Changes All Gains. New York, April 4. The stock market to day gave no indication of gettiug out of the stagnation in which it has fallen; and while thero was some show of animation in the early dealings, the later trading was marked by even more intense dullness than has been seen at any tttnd sinco tho first of the year. A rather firmer temper prevailed, due in most part to arbitrage purchases be t een this market and those ot London and Philadelphia. Rending, Atchison, New England and St. Paul occupied the most prominent position in point ofnctivlty, bnt In neither were the movements of special importance, though New England in the late trudiiiL- succeeded in recovering yesterday's loss. Thefeatnres or the day were the continued pressure upon Northern Pacific and the subsequent recov ery, with the stiength developed in Missouri Pacitle on light transactions and the ad vances in Cotduge and Northwestern pre Icncd. The npward'movement in Cordage was principally 11 marking up of the stock on the short interest, bnt the buying in the other stocks ment'oned.besides Lackawanna, Reading, Louisville, New Albany and Chi cago, Wheeling and Lako Erie nnd Luke Shoie, was of the host kind. The early dealing wero listless, and after a steady openinz prices in a few stocks ad vanced, but the movoment spread to tho en tiro list by the afternoon: and while the gains on mot are lor small Unctions only, the advances in a few stocks wcie large and gave chaiacter to the whole market. There was no diminution of the strength. The cloio was quiet, but flrm, at orabout the best of tho day. The final changes show gains invariably.
