THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH. MONDAY, APRIL 25. 18921 FEATURES OF TRADE. IN'ew Southern Vegetables Are Sup planting the Old Stock. HOUSEHOLD EXPENSES VERT LOW. Cereal Receipts Reported Lijht and Prices Down to Bed Eock. HIDES A.ND CALFSKINS ARE STRONG OrricE or The DisrATCH, Fittsburq. Saturday, April 23. Tho vreck's trade in produce lines has developed few new fcatuies. Tho supply of Southern vegetables lias been larce and drift of markets is toward a loner level. Lat season's stock of vegetables Is dull and ilow. The old is bein;r steadily supplanted by the new. Old potatoes have seldom been so low in price as they have been all this enring. A j ear a-ro, the cost per bushel -was about tho same as it now is per ban e). The family that couumes a bushel of potatoes in the week, has an advantage or $1 50 per week over prices of a year ago. There has not been a season in the past decade when prices of fruits and vegetable have been so low as they are this season. The honsoholder's expenses aie tally -5 nor cent below -n hat they i ere at this time last year, so far as lruits and vegetables are concerned. In Cereal Lines. It will be seen by reference to home mar ket column that leceipts have been very light for the past two weeks. The supply of hay has not been up to demand and markets are very strong. The tone of cereals has im proved in the past week, and all signs point to higher prices. The export demand for flour has improved, giving evidence that prices are don n to hai d pan and that fnturo changes will be upwaid. Until the past month export demand for flour was very disappointing to jobbers, as well as North western millers. The short crops of wheat in Eastern Eu rope last season were worked by bulls lar moicthan Sacts hae justified. Russia has managed to get along without importing as heavily from America as was generally an ticipaicd by our speculators. Demand Ironi that source has, however, shown decided im provement in ine past lew weeKS,anu au t-igne point to higher-juiced wheat and flour at an early djy. Hides and Cnlfslrlns. There has been a better demand this week than last, particularly tor llghtweishts Steers are active at quotations, and all other grades aie firm with prospects good for an advance. Calf and bheepskins are also in good request, notwithstanding the Jact that receipts are steadily increasing. All offeiings ot calt and sheepskins are promptlj taken at prices quoted. The Boston Herald has this to say of tho situation and outlook in boot and shoe lines: "The boot and shoe situation is not much changed. The number of buyers here in person is diminishing; the majority of these buyers, having finished their orders, have departed for home. Still there are a few buyers left, and they are placing some ordeisor buying sample. The number of samples sold for lall goods is remarkably large, and, if the volume of trade is any where nearly up to the same proportions, the fall trade will be a heavy one. Indeed, tne leeling is rather buoyant concerning the tall trade. The country l in better shape to take a heavy volume of goods than last year in all ecticus except the South, and in the South the position has improved some what, since cotton has advanced about lc above the lowest price. "In spring goods manufacturers are still delivering many goods, and occasionally duplicate orders for such goods aie being taken, but such orders are not plenty. It is rather woi king toward the between-seasons peiiod. The volume ot the spring season lias been a heavier one than might have been supposed, for the reason that trade has seemed dull all alon,;, with the exception of special lines of goods. In these special lines there has been a very heavy trade, and it is in such special lines that the trade is holding out tne best, tome of tho uianu larturers ot special lines have all the orders at hand that they can possibly fill, and with these manufacturers trade is very good." The fact that Edward Paidridge was making very much of a one-man market of it, drove many of tho members to tho voting tables to cast a ballot "for" the re vival of a general distribution of market figures. The members not only voted at the tables, but stayed there to influence others. The proposition carried 5SS to 433. The leading futures rangea as follows, as cor rected by John M. New York, April 23. The stock market to day was moderately active, but being under tho hammer for most of the session was weak almost throughout: and while the limited nature of the speculation prevented any heavy declines or wide fluctuations, the losses were material in all of the leadiug shares. Tne Coal stocks were inclined to advance .during the early part of the day. The pur chases for Philadelphia account were marked, though as that center was so lately a seller. It Is probable that the demand was to cover shorts exclusively. The effect, how ever, was to advance the stocks 1 per cent, and to some extent the general list felt the influence. The room, however, was still Dcarishly inclined, and the publisheduttorancesof the representative of one of tho largest foreizn banking houses, that the movement of gold outward would probably continue for some time, but supplemented by a further ad vance in exchange rates, encouraged the traders to attack the list, which they did with vigor aud unusual impartiality, and under the pressure everytmng yieiaea. Reading, St. Paul, Northern Pacific pre ferred, Atchison and New England wore the active stocks, but they moved with the rest of the list, and the losses were remarkably unitorm. The usual rally towarl the close failed to come, notwithstanding the favorable nature of the bank state ment, which showed a large gain in cash ana an increase In the surplus reserve of over $3,000,009. There were no special features, and the Coal stocks gave way with the rest in the late dealings, the market Anally closing actlye and weak at the lowest prices of the day. The final changes are all losses, and they extend to 1 per cent in Jersey Central, Lake Sabre and Northern Pacific preferred.
