THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH FBIDAY. APRIL 1, A. BUCLEUS or AST. Arguments tn Favor or the Offer Mado to Allegheny Council. The attention of Mr. John W. Beatty, who returned from New York yesterday, was called to the recent discussion of the project looking to the founding of a per manent collection of paintings in the Alle gheny Carnegie Library, and his offer to secure, as gifts to the collection, ten pict ures, aggregating in value $10,000. He said that this oiler to Allegheny Councils was made because he thought it the most prac tical way to solve the difficulty of opening the sallery, and would insure the establish ment ol the collection, upon a good stand ard of art. A united ellort of this kind would insure at least 20 good canvases to begin with, and others Ot like quility would naturally be attracted to the collection. Les than 20 pictures, Mr. Bcitty thinks, would not be sufficient, and he is confident inns councils will act favorably upon the suggestion when the matter cones properly belore that body, as the amount is really a very modest sum to be invested for a purpose of this kind, and without the aid of Councils it will be very difficult to secsre a sufficient number of good works. HAY BE A BAD OMEN. The First Hearings In New Central Station Number 13. Yesterday morning the first court was held in the new Central sUtion. Whether a bad omen or not, the nunber of cases dis posed of was just 13. Thre was nothing Interesting in the heariigs, as the first in mates of the new jail weie mostly drunks.
