THE PITTSBUEG DISPATCH, TUESDAY, MAKOH 29, 189a 6 GUFFEY IS HOPEFUL Ho Believes He Will Defeat Secre tary of State Harrity FOE THB IATE W. L. SCOTT'S PLACE is a Member of the National Democratic Committee. CORBETT WANTS AN HONEST DOLLAK The result of Saturday's primaries in Washington and Dauphin counties and the action of the conventions in those counties yesterday were decidedly satisfactory to the anti-Harrity Democrats of Pittsburg, and the followers of J. M. Guffey now claim to see more bright stars in the political sky. Mr. Guffey was himself somewhat elated over the result in those counties and he was disposed to talk freely on the subject. "Naturally, I am very much gratified at the result in "Washington county," Mr. Guffey said yesterday. "The fight there was fair end square between ilr.Harrity and myself. My friends won easily, and as an evidence of where I stand and where my friends stand, they indorsed Cleveland fsr President The effort to persuade the peo ple of the State that I have been making a fight against Cleveland and for Hill or any other candidate has fallen flat, and when and where the lines have been drawn be tween Mr. Harrity and- myself I have won. My friends are Democrats. They want no power to swap off for selfish purposes, and it is nniair to charge them with straying after false gods just for the purpose of de-i featingthem." Both Sides Claim an Ultimate Victory. The contest between Mr. Guffey and Mr. Harrity for the late "W. L. Scott's place on the Democratic National Committee is daily attracting more attention. The Guf fey people are confident of success, while Secretary Harrity's followers claim they will win the fight easily. 'The primaries on Saturday last would seem to settle the contest for a place on the Rational Committee," one of Guffey's fol lowers said yesterday. "The result in "Washington county settles the fight in the Twenty-fourth Congressional district, as "Washington and that part of Allegheny that is in the Twenty-fourth district nave dele- -- nnnf-1. r notvm tTio W1 Tiaflrtnfll dfl. egates. The four national delegates from Allegheny county are for Guffey, Bradford county has controlled the Fifteenth Con gressional district for Guffey and Lycoming county has decided the Sixteenth Con gressional district in the same way. At the primaries in Dauphin county on Saturday lour Harrity and four Guffey delegates were elected, but Perry county in the same Congressional district last week instructed for the Guffev candidates for national dele gates which settles the Fourteenth district in our favor. Against the Mate Administration. "In the Sixth Congressional district Michael Murphy, Mr. Guffey's business partner, will go to the State Convention and will see that a Guffey man goes to the National Convention. In the Eighteenth Congressional district Franklin, Union and Snyder counties have announced themselves as being against the State administration. Ex-Secretary of State Stenger and D. A. Orr, editor and owner of the Harris burg Patnet, live in that Congressional dis trict, and they will give it to anyone who is opposed to Mr. Harrity. Lackawanna county, the Eleventh Congressional district, and Luzerne county, the Twelfth Congres sional district, have declared against Mr. Harrity, which, up to date, leaves Mr Har rity, outside of the Philadelphia delegation, with the Nineteenth Congressional district pronounced in favor of his candidacy. "These figures are absolutely correct," the gentleman concluded. "Ot the districts in which primaries are yet to be held Mr. Guffev is confident of winning a majority, especially when it is known that the contest is not against Mr. Cleveland, but is between Mr. Guffey and Mr. Har rity." A BLOW AT PATTKOrt. The Washington County Democrats Refuse Him as Their Second Choice. A special to Tee Dispatch from "Wash ington, Pa., says the Democratic Conven tion, which was held at this place to-day, was decidedly interesting and proved a somplete knock-out for the State adminis tration. The convention was well attended. County Chairman John C Bane led the anti administration fight and Colonel Streator was in command of the other side. Chairman Bane had supported James Kerr for State Chairman against Chairman "Wright and a vigorous battle was made againBt him on that account Bane united all the old factions of the party in his support, however, and his victory was overwhelming. Reso lutions were adopted instructing the dele cates to the State Convention to support Cleveland for President and a resolution making Governor Pattison the second choice for President was defea'ed. Messrs. Bane, Judson, Holland, Jackson, Townsend and Denniston were elected dele gates to the State convention. They are pronounced Cleveland and Guffey men. JUDGE COEBETT ON POLITICS. He Is Opposed to Free Silver and Tavors Carlisle for President. Ex-Judge Corbett, of Clarion county, was in Pittsburg yesterday in conference with business friends. The ex-Judge is an earn est Democrat, but just at present he says he is more or less disgusted with the uncertain policy of his party. "If our representa tives in Congress keep on tinkering with the silver question it will make little or no difference who the party's Presidental candidate is. "We can have no hope of electing our man on a free silver platform. Personally, I am for rev enue reform and for an honest dollar. Logic ally the Democratic candidate for Congress should be John G. Carlisle, but I guess he's on the wrong side of the line to be nom inated. After all," the Judge concluded, "we should have little to say in naming the candidate, as we will have absolutely noth ing to say in behalf of his election. The best thing we can do for the party is to put J. M. Guffey on the National Committee." In Justice to Judge Buffington. A prominent member of the Pittsburg bar speaking yesterday of the late Quay Dalzell contest iu Armstrong county, said: "The report that Judge Buffington, of the United States Court, took any part in that contest does the Judge an injustice. I know positively that Judge Buffington did not take any part in that fight He has too keen arespect f or the position he oc cupies to take part in politics now that he is on the bench. He has been holding court every day and attending to the duties of his high office." Saltation Oil is the best liniment ever offered to the public. It is both good and cheap.
