( At the East Liberty yards markets were more satisfactory to the drover this -week than any time this year. The run of cattle vas light, there beinc: only-.W loads on sale against an average or SO to 90 loads the past few weeks. The supply was not nearly equal to the demand, and desirable butcher grades were active at an advance of 25c per cwt on prices of a week ago. The quality of offerings was not up to late average, but in spite of this adverse feature prices -were higher all along the line, and all -were promptly taken at the advance. The highest price paid was 54 70. One load of good Ohio beeves weighing 1,250 lbs was sold at this figure. Prime heavy cattle would have easily bronght $5 00 and more if there had been any such offered. Fresh cows were in larger supply this week than last, and choice grades were in good demand with ?45 as the top of the mar ket Calves were plentiful and last week's prices were barely maintained, top price being 6Jf c. The rnn of sheep and lambs for the week has been unusually light, the total being not above 25 car loads, against 35 loids the previous week. Owing to the litrht receipts markets were excited at an advance of 25c. to 40c .per cwt. A fancy deck of lambs was old at $7 30 and a deck of choice sheep at 56 6a These were higher prices than have been reached this year be lore. CHICAGO The decided strength which was the teature In wheat at the close- yester day afternoon, was still the feature to-daly. All the surroundings or the market were decidedly bullish, and May advanced fully 2c from the low point touched yesterday. Probably the most bullish Influence of the day was the weather. The bright sunshine of yesterday and the spring-like zephyrs had been succeeded tys overcast skies and sharp winds The slgnfcl service reported a cold wave advancing from the Northwest, where the thermometer was In the vicinity of zero, and a blinding blizzard was said to be ragin". Other strong factors were the firm cables and the decided strength in all domestic markets Foreigners were said to be quietly buying at the seaboard, and pros--pective export engagements were encour aging to holders. There were liberal buying orders from Jfcw York. The volume of trade was fair but not very large, and the price changes were limited to a comparatively narrow range. The available supply, as reported by BmdttrtfCt, Increased 283,000 bushels east of tbe Rockies, and decreased 101,000 bushels on the Pacific coast, the not increase being 187,000 bushels. The price or Mav around the'opeuing was made at from S9'S9Kc, against SSVcatthe close, yesterday; settled to S9Jc: advanced to 89c again; reacted to 8Sc during the last houi "on sales by longs, who had a profit in their deals; then strengthened under the buving by nervous shorts, who feared to have their trades over night in view of the threatening weather; advancing to 89c again, and the close was firm at 89c. Hog products lower at the start, but soon giew strong and advanced sharply, al though the receipts of hogs were larger than expected, ana prices at the yards were 10c lower. The advance was partly In sym pathy with wheat and partly on covering by shorts, who got somewhat frightened by liberal offers to purchase. The habit for weeks past has been to place small orders for current require ments. The Outside Public Holding OS Bear Pressure on New England and St. Fanl Reading Active and Firm Grangers Quiet, but Industrials Animated. New York, March 9. The stock market to-day gave additional evidence that the out side public now stands aloof from the spec ulation, and the trading during the day was undoubtedly the result of manipulation on both sides. There was free selling of New England and Reading and a few specialties for some time, but under cover of these sales liberal covering was indulged in in the gen eral list, and a sharp upward" movement In the Coalers and Vanderbilts followed, In which tho whole list sympathized. With the cessation of the buying, however, the market sank into dullness, except" in a few spots, among which New England became prominent. The Grangers, exoept St. Paul, were very quiet, and the shorts put out yesterdav on the dividend scare in St. Paul were largely taken in again to-day. The other feature of the day's operations was the activity and firmness in Beading, which was held be tween 54 and 56 almost the entire session. More animation was seen among the Indus trials and a stronger temper. Short cover ing, with the dullness following the relief from bear pressure, were the salient charac teristics of the market throughout. Tne opening continued the change in temper ueun late last evening, and while New England was up one halt. Beading, 1, and Jersey Central 1 per cent, the general list, as a rule, showed material gains over last night's figures. The upward movement received only a temporary check by the at tacks on Reading, New England and the Industrials, but soon the whole list was ad vancing, though slowly, except in the few leaders. One of the most notable move ments was a 3narn spurt in Lackawanna from 158 to 161, while tbe specialties, the Sus- Seuhanna and Western stocks, Denver and io Grande n referred, Buflalo.ltocuester and Pittsburg, Union Pacific and Denver and Gulf all made special advances on an in creased business at different times during the day. The market finally closed active and firm to strong at near the highest prices reached. The whole list is higher this even ing, and New England Is up 2; Cordage, 2; Lackananna, 1; Sugar, Reading ,; Louisvillo and Nashville, 1, and Onion Pa cific, 1. The total sales of stocks to-day were 340,374 shares, including Atchison, 6,900; Delawaie, Lackawanna and Western, 5,125; Erie, 18,760; Lake Shore, 4,145; Louisville and Nashville, 10,210; Northwestern, 5,542; Northern Pacific preferred, 4,800; New England, 51,556; Read ing, 70,170; St. Panl, 41,000; Union Pacific, 8, 187: Denver and.Rio Grande, -4,756. Railroad bonds are fairly active, with the usual firm temper and small fluctuations among the most prominent speculative Issues, and while Richmond and West Point 5s, the Reading issues and .Ytchison Incomes were all active, only the first named scored any material advance. They rose steadily, and at 64 were up 2 per cent. The sales were $1,969,000. The following table shows the price of active stocks on the 2ew York Stock Exchangeyesterdajr.
