Ixport Beeves in Active Demand and Prices a Shade Higher. SIIEEP 1XD SWIXE WEAK AXD LOWER Office of The Dispatch. ) Prrrsncno, Wedxesdav, March 2. ( At the East Liberty yards there have been about 85 loads of cattle on sale this week, ajrainst 70 loads last week. Quality of offerings was better this week than for months past. Sales were reported at 53 10 per cwt., which was the highest price real ized this year. On all common and low grade cattle markets have been weak arid 15c to 20c per cwtlower this week than last, while eood export cattle are strong and ac tive at a shade better prices. Fresh cows were in liberal supply and fancy were in good demand with $40 as top price. Veal calves are coming in freely and last week' prices are well maintained. The run of hogs for the week has been close to 40 carloads, and markets were slow with droopinc tendencies. Top price this morning v as So 15. About 35 loads of sheep and lambs were ofiered at Liberty this week. Top price of sheep was 5 85 and top lambs 56 85. Prices in general are 10 to 15c lower this week than lambs, with choice wethers the excep tion to the rule. The latter were fairly steady. A Live Steele Firm's Review. Wheat Fairly Active but Unsettled, Owing to Conflicting Reports Bradstrcet's Crop Bulletin Corn nnd OaU Follow Wheat Pr ovislons Quiet and Steady. CHICAGO Wheat was fairly active to day, but the market was somewhat un settled, though prices ruled higher than yesterday with sharp fluctuations. Cables reported the English 'markets stronger and somewhat higher, and domestic markets all seemed to be doing better at the outset. The weather, too, was regarded as anything bnt favorable or the growing crops, owing to freezing and thawing, and a good many crop damage dispatches were received, an nn nsual nnmbcr coming in from Michigan. The Government weather crop report was also a bullish feature. It pointed out that the ist month had been a trying one on tho wheat plant, but whether tt had caused scrions damage by freezing and thaw ing re mained to be determined during the present month always a critical one for winter wheat. This inclined sellers generally to conservatism. The weather all over the Northwest was mild, but In England it was repotted cold and unfavorable. The re ceipts, both here and in the Northwest, showed a falling off. " On the whole, the position was looked on as rather bullish, and, as New York was a good buyer, the market was Arm with an upward tendency. Shorts covered with considerable freedom. Under this demand. May, which opened c higher at 90c, ad vanced gradually to 91c. The advance was pumuiatcu oy the good shipping demand at the seaboard, the Atlantic ports and New Orleans having clearel 500 OOO bushels of wneat and 47,000 packages of flour. Late pri vate cables came In easier, and especially from the Continent, and Kansas and Mis souri dispatches said crop prospects in those States wete splendid. Then came SrodttreeCi report of the available supply, showing a net decrease of only 161,000 bushels on both coasts, east of the Rocky Mountains showing an increase of 103,000' With these statistics in hand the oppottunity for work ing a scalp was availed of, and the early buyers Dezan to offer freely, with the result that the market broke to 90Jc. Their object accomplished, the sellers began to buy again, and, assisted by heavy buying lor New York account, decidedly better late ca bles and crop damage reports from Trance, the market became very strong, advancing to 91Jc, and closed steady at 91c Corn started strong on tho small receipts and the firmness In wheat. Shorts wore un easy and covered freely, sending prices up some, as there was apparently very little for sale. Later, on the break In wheat, the feel ing sortcned considerably. The demand Tell off and tho offering increased, prices declin ing somewhat, but firmed up again with wheat toward the close. May opened Jc higher, at 42?e; advanced to 42c; declined to 12c, and closed steady at 42Jc Oats 4uicb auu suuy, ujusillg wunout change. Hog products generally weak and lower. Hogs at the ynnds were easier, the stocks were larger than expected, and there was free selling. American pork suffered a de cline of 15c compared with vesterdav, but re covered all except 5c. TEBTEEXD 0FM0XET AKD SPECULATION Knowing what business Is, it may be in teresting and instructive, as well as en couraging, to turn back a year and see what it then was. The financial position a year ago was extremely critical; failures were counted by the score, confidence was weak, and the outlook uncertain. Conditions favored a panic and it was by the merest chance that it was averted. The reverse of all this exists to-day. Money Is abundant and easily obtained. It is seeking invest ment in all directions. Any lack of activity cannot be charged to the poverty of con sumers. General trade is by no means bad. Confidence has been restored in large measure Farmers are prosperous Econ omy is being practiced by all classes of peo ple, and the country is gaining strength. Examined from any reasonable standpoint, the situation is "far from discouraging, while the outlook is cheerful. It does not require much seeking to find good reason tor entertaining hopeful views of the fu ture. Iron casts the only shadow. Wanted by a Syndicate. On Friday, March 11, at 11 o'clock A. M., on the floor of the Exchange, the Govern ment property on Penn avenue and Garri son alley will be again offered at public sale. The two former efforts to dispose of it were unsuccessful for reasons that are well known. The coming sale promises to hsve a better result while prospective bidders are not going about telling their plans, it is known that at least some of them are doing some very close figuring, showing that they mean business It was stated on cood authority a few days ago that a syndicate of -Liberty street business men had been formed to purchase the prop erty for their own use. One of these gen tlemeni admitted as much yesterday, but declined to go into details 'He said they were dissatisfied with their present quar ters They wanted more room. If they succeeded in getting the Government property they would soon cover it with large modarn warehouses. Several indi vidual capitalists are also in the field, and it is understood that one of the railroads will be among the bidders Altogether, the prospect is good for lively competition and better prices than offered at either of the previous efforts to dispose of this valu able property. Irish Properties for Sale. A movement is on foot to find purchasers for some Of the fine residential places in Ire land. No far-reaching attempt has hitherto been made to deal with Irish property in the sense here proposed. The desire has been growing from year to year on the part of the rich families in the United States to have a place on that side of the water a country house in England or a shooting in Scotland. The rich Australian, or other Ando-Ravon colonist, who has left the old country in his early days, often comes back, wiiit me uomiug lu&uiicb siruug iu iiiiu, iu his birthland and settles down. It is from these sources that buyers are expected. A typical example of the style of property to be offered is that of Kllleen Castle, in County Meath, about 20 miles lrom Dublin, which the Earl of Fingall will put up at auction next month. Here is a feudal edifice dating from the eleventh century, and once occupied by King John of Eng land, with a noble park and surrounding lands ot about 1,UUU acres, an in hand. The Stock Market Mainly in the Traders' Bands Industrials Conspicuous for" Strength New Ensland Still One of tlio Leaders Trade In Bonds Fair. New Youk, March 2. The stock market continued to be a traders' market in the main to day, and the sellinc by the profes sionals maintained a heavy tone through out most of the day in tho general list, though in the afternoon there was better support noticeable in tho active shares, and the Industrials and specialties wero con snicuous for strength and activity in the prevailing dullness. At the present time, however, any connection, either nctnal or rumored, with the Coal deal now supposed to be pending, Is sufficient to cause not only a marked increase in the business done In the stock on the Exchange, but also a mate rial Improvement in the quotations. The latest one to be so mentioned Is Erie, which tho last rumor puts down as a partner with tho New York Central in acquiring control of the Dolawaio-and Hudson. This rumor became current after tho close of business last night, and this nforning there was a rush to buy it for speculative account, while the foreign houses weiealso heavy bidders for the stock. As a consequence the common opened tip 1 per cent at & and the nreferrod Vri at 77. The high nrices brought out a great deal of it, and the pre ferred retired quickly to 75J, while the com mon, altera lurther slight improvement, barely held its own, and aftertho roienoon was over both sank back into comparative dullness with the remainder of the market. Outside of Erie, among the railway list, New England continued to be most promi nent, and it sold off over l'f per cent in the early trading, only to recover later in the day. The coal stocks, the grangers and the others were quiet throughout, though North western became active and strong at one time. The Industiials wero the strong features of the afternoon. Sugar rising 1 per cent, -while Distillers' rallied from its late weakness and advanced 1 per cent in tho forenoon, though not able to retain it later In the dav, when the Cotton Oil Stocks and Sugar again became prominent in the ad vance. The buying was or a better character in the late dealings, and materially affected tho tone of the close. The general llst.open iug at insignificant changes from last night's figures, remained dull and droooing during the jrrenter part of the day, but ral lied in the last hour, when the forenoon's losses were generally recovered. The onlv really weak point in tho market was Wheel ing and Lake Eric, which declined steadily and failed to rally with the rest of the list. The market finally closed active and firm to strong, with tho active stocks at tho best prices of the day, but with the general list at or near the opening figures. Tie ad- vancos were very material,, and to-night NeV England shows a gain of 3 percent; Sugar, 2: Lackawanna, l Erie, IVi; Cotton Oil, 1, and the prelerrcd, 2, while Wheel ing and Lake Ui'ie is down 1 per cent. The totnl sales or stocks to-day were 420, 892 shares, including: Atchison, 8,285; Can ada Soucherp, 4,895; Chicago Gas, 12,655; Dela ware, Lackawanna and Wtcrn, 11.360; Dela ware and Hndson, 3.000; Erie, 108,650; Lake Shore, 3,100: LonUvllle and Nashville, 4,420; Northwestern, 8 570: New Jersey Central, 3,655; New York Central, 3 400: Northern Pa cific, preferred, 6,200; New England, 71,300; Reading, 34,700; Richmond and West Point; 8,700; St Paul, 20,900: Western Union, 3,103. Tho trading in railway bonds was fair, and villi Erie seconds and the Reading issues considerable animation was shown, though while exhibiting, as a rule, a rather heavy temper, no material changes of special note occurred in the list. The total transactions reached $1,527,000, but the only movement to attract attention was In tho New York and Northern seconds, which after selling to 60, retired to 57K- at which they closed with a. loss of 1 per cent. The market followed closely the tempeu of the sharo list, and the final dealings displayed a much better tone than during tho afternoon.
