Capture of a Man Who Attempted to
Abduct a Schoolboy. '

HE HAD SEEN LIVING AS A IIEKMIT

ment yesterdav afternoon immediately after
the dismissal of the public schools by an
unknown man attempting to kidnap a small
boy who was on his way home from the First
wara school. Hie man had been seen lot

he followed the group of pupils down to
Seventh street, when suddenly, and without
any ceremony he pounced upon a (.mail lad
aged about 7 years, and seizin; him by the
arms he threw him on his shoulders and
started on a run up toward the rear of the
First ward school house.
The alarm was promptly given and sev
eral hundred people gave chase and capt
ured the would-be kidnaper. The mother
of the boy, almost frantic with grief, soon
appeared upon the scene, end the
boy was restored to her arms by
Milton Baxter, who captured the man and
rescued the boy. The man was taken be
fore Alderman "A. J. Kuhn, and upon it
being there ascerlained that the kidnaper
was the bov's father the 'Squire dismissed
the case, saving there was nothing in the
statutes governing such cases. He there
fore pleaded no jurisdiction.

At the hearing an interesting story, not
generally known, developed. James Mars
den is the name of the would-be kidnaper.

who was hir-hlv respected and was a de
cidedly pretty girl. After the birth of the
M-cond child the husband and wife quar

upon anin industiious, thrifty citizen.
He was employed at Homestead and was
constinth at his work. He mado eood

vider for his family. After his first quarrel
with his wile ho neglected his work, became

and neglected Ins familv. When Mantmet
took him he began abusing his tamily He re
reatedlv whipped his wife, andill-tieated
l-er until friends of the distressed wonia.i in
terfered. She with her two children wer
taken in chirge by her relatives, who are
lespecttd and prospcious in business at
Homestead.
Living In the Wilderness.
3!arden finally diappeared and ho had
almost been foi gotten. Some time ago it
was learned that he was living as a hermit
in the w ildcrncss at Allequippa, about'a mi'e
ubo-. o ilcKeesport. He had never been seen
in Homestead since leaving here, and even
Ins former associates did not know him

He was a ili-gusting picture of filth and
di-Mpation. He was unshaven. His clothes
veie ragsed and tattered. His long, hair
knotted and twisted, hung down almost to
liis shoul ders an d his pi esen ce was to an ex

ately after being released from custody. Ho

ren and said lie would jet have them with
him.

Willie Linn, the boy who recently had

Hats station coil road, near Homestead,

of the converting mill disaster last Septem
ber, w hen three men were burned to death.
The mother had been dead but five weeks,
when the father was brought iiomc troni tho

Engineer Anderson Killed.
William Anderson, an engineer on tho
Jlaltimoie and Ohio road, was killed last
night near his home at Hizelwood. His
ensine was attichcd to a heavy train with
nnothcr ensino in tte rear. Anderson was
woikinc about his engine- when the real
engine inoicd the tram. He was thrown off
and nnder his ensme and was instantly
:il!cd. He uasSJ -y ears oldandleaves a wife
and three children.
