CHICAGO Wheat declined nearly all day and closed easy at bottom figures with a loss of ljgc on May, the active future, com pared with yesterday's last price. Besides being weak, the markot was dull. About all of the news was unfavorable to holders, and discouraged longs were generally in clined to let go. There was good buying at the start around DO cents, but it did not take long to satisfy the demand. May, which opened at 9JJc against J0)Sc at tho close yes terday, soon declinei to c. There was rather free co ering by shorts at tho de cline, and tliero was somo Investment buy ing with a reaction to S9JJc. Tho market weakened again on ficfi Killing during tho last hour, and closed easy at S9Kc Corn was fairly active and showed a good deal of strength. The liberal export move ment, the biisk Eastern and Xew England demand and the continued poor grading wore all strong factors. A notable feature was thoticngth in the near futures, which are erj-cloe to May. This is because of tho continued poor grading. February shows an udvancoof 1 cent oer yesti-rdiv, closing within .cortop figures, while May closed unchanged after having been J cents higher. Facts About Industrial "Properties Interest to Outsiders. of FEATURES OF M0XEI AND SPECULATION One of the most important transactions in outlying realty for a long time has just been consummated. Final papers were signed yesterday. The property involved consists of 3G0 acres, situated at"Vebster station, on the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston Kail road and Monongahcla river, 33 miles above Pittsburg, known as the Heslep, Bradford-Allen and Castner farms. The consideration was in the neighborhood of 5108,000, or a little over 5300 an acre, which is considered reasonable, as over 200 acres of the tract are underlaid with coal. The object of the purchasers, whose names are withheld for the present, is to layout and build up a manuiacturing town. The trans action was accomplished through the agency of Kelly & Rogers, of the East End. The Other Purchaser. The sale of the Dr. Dake property for 590,000, reported in this column yesterday,, was cilecte'd through the agency of Black & Baird. Mr. H. Childs was mentioned as one of the purchasers. It was learned yes terday that the other Is Mr. G. .T. .Young, the "Wood street picture man. The lots are the deepest on the avenue Tenants were greatly exercised when 'they read the ac count of the transaction. Plans for the new buildings are now in the hands of architects. Concerning Manufacturing Sites. As will be seen by reference to the ad vertising columns of Tub DisrATCH, several fine manufacturing sites are on the market. No one desiring to locate in Pitts burg and share in its prosperity should be discouraged by reports that this sort of pro perty is scarce This is not the fact, is every well-informed citizen knows. It abounds both in the city proper and in the suburbs, and can be bought at prices all the way from $500 to $1,500 an acre, with coal, gas, railroad and river frontage, and every thing eUe necessary to cheap production and easy access to all the markets of the country. The Kaitern Idea. Here is an Eastern diagnosis of the spec ulative position. "The general public cer tainly is not in the market to the extent that many people think, but the holders of great wealth, both individuals and corpora tions, have for a long time been picking up prime stocks and fair to prime bonds. These securities they are able to, and do, hold very firmly, and as concessions come in the market tliev pick up more, having great confidence that the phenomenal con ditions of prosperity now visible will bring about very much higher prices." THE SHAKE MARKET FAST LAPSIXG INTO DULLNESS. London, Supposed to Ba Rigged on ThU Side, a Prominent Factor Buying of a Better Quality Than Selling, Hence "Weakness Does Xot Prevail. Xew York, Feb. 2. The dealings in tho stock market continue to show a decreased volume, aud the activity tends to restrict it self for the present to srfots which are paid special attention by the shorts or the bears. London was a factor in the market auring tho morning, and the selling was free in the specialties innhich that center is inter ested. Whilo there was 11 suspicion thaf the lower figures sent from London before tho opening here wore rigged from this side of the ator.it seemed to have no Immediate influence on the speculation. Later in the day tho covering of the shorts became more pronounced, but all through tho day the buying was seen to be or a much hotter character than the selling, and with the professionals, ranged on tho side of lower figures. There was a' decidedly strong temper developed in tho final trading. The feature of tho late rise was Western Union, which continued its advance 'with a con stantly increasing business, and at the closo It was the most active stock in the list. The buying was believed to be stimulated by tho insiders, and this fact had much to do with tho strength of the general list at tho time, though in nono of them was the Improve ment of special significance. The selling of Lonisvlllo In the forenoon did not assume large proportions, and the impression made on the stock was no groatcr than that In any other part of the market, the concessions under the free covering being aliko In all cases after the opening losses, w hich amounted to' 1V in Xew York Central, and large fractions In Union Pacific and Erie. The demand in the loan crovid was very marked, and the Selling at the opening was soon seen to bo for the purpose of buying stocks in different portions of the list, so that tho temper of tho market soon changed for the hotter, and while the advances in tne lorcnoon were slight in all cases. exceDt Distillers', that se curity was suddenly advanced2 percent aud as quickly let off over 1 per cent. The movements in this stock, however, failed to affect the rest of the market. Tho other Industrials were strong, Sugar rising 2 per cent on small transactions. As the after noon wore along the selling became less and less and tho market drirted into positive dullness. Tho last hour, however, was marked by the awakening of a new demand, the shorts becoming specially eager In view of the strength in Western Union, while tho bull points afloat were ot tho most discour aging nature to tho bears. Tho tear evi dently Mas that tho Gould interests had en tered uponacampalgn for higher ptices.and the shorts ran to cover in all portions of the list. The demand saw no abatement up to tho final sales, and the matket closed fairly active and strong at the best figures. West ern Union shows a gain of 2 per cent, Dis tillers' ljnnd Sugar IK, while other changes are in most cases fractional gains. Total sales of stocks to-day were 27S,32t shares, including: Atchison, 16,617: Chicago Gas, 3,810: Delaware, Lackawanna and West ern, 9,870; Krie, 13,155: Louisville and Xash ville, 15,023; Manhattan, 3,140; Northwestern, 4,526; Northern Pacific preferred, 5,900; Xew England, 3,800; Beading, 12,700; St. Paul, 21,M)0; Union Pacific, 11,500; Western Union. 31,300. Ballroad bonds were comnaratlvely quiet, and while the dealings were distributed among an unusually large number or issues, the total sales were only 2,404,000, out of which Atchison incomes contributed 122,000; Kansas and Texas seconds, 151,000; Xickel Plate. 4s, 121,000, and Union Pacific notes, 101,000. Tho temperof the market continued strong within narrow limits, however, and while only Iowa Central firsts showed any material advance among tho active issues, almost everything is higher. The Florida Frnlt Xot Popular In This Market The Mediterranean Article Has the Call Facts Secured Trom Deafer Here. It will be seen by reference to the home market- column that bananas ' and oranges are dull with a tendency to lower prices, and fancy lemons are firm nt advancing prices. A Florida cor respondent, who is in the lemon trade, com plains tbat our quotations in this line are above the facts." This correspondent claims that lemons can be delivered to the Pitts burg Jobber at prices which will enable bim to sell at m-ices much below our quotations. Tho writer looked up this question as to Florida lemons, and his investi gations yielded the following results. There Is little or no call in this market for Florida lemons. The call is almost entirely for Messina stock, which in qunlity nnd sizo of boxes seem to suit this market. Said one of our leading jobbers: "Florida lemons come to this market generally iu boxes contain in" from 150 to 200, while Messinas come in bo"xes containing 3t0 to 360 lemons. The former aro thick skinned n a rule, nnd neither quality nor size 01 beftee suits our trade. We cannot get over $3 per box Tor Florida lemons, and the markets are slow at this price. Fancy Messina lomons, on the other hand, are quick salo at $4 25 to $4 50 per box. We have frequent offers of Florida lemons, nnd wonld be glad to handle themtr there was a market, but Mediterannean lemons have the call, and we are forced to meet the demand even though at the expense of the Florida fruit." Importers' and Dealers la Dry Goods, was established In January. 1344. by Mr. Henry P. Journeay and Mr. Lyman S. Burnham. In the following year Mr. Hugh Boyd became a partner, and the firm remained unchanged nntll the death of Mr. Jonrneay a year ago necessitated a reor ganization, and lu conversion Into a corporation was accomplished. . Tne reputation of the arm for honorable dealing and for the high class of good which it handles has atways been recognized, aad Its credit and that of the Company succeeding It, Is the highest ac corded by the Commercial Agenclesof the country. It has over 50,000 patrons, not only In Brooklyn, but throughout the New England States, New York. New Jersey. Pennsylvania and Maryland, and extending as lar South as Texas, and a4 far West as Iowa. For the three months ending December 31. 1831 the first complete quarter of the Corporation its gross business amounted to ?3S6,965 17, being 17I.S43 43 greater than the busi ness of the firm during the same period In the pre ceding year. It Is, however, expected that the business will show a much greater increase after March 1st, upon which date the Com pany will remove from its present limited and inconveniently located premises on Atlantic Avenue to Its new and commodious building now nearly completed at the Junction of Fulton Street and Flatbush Avenue. This site was selected after due consideration, and It is believed to be the most advantageous location in the City of Brooklyn for a dry goods business. It is reached by seven dif ferent lines of street cars. Is opposite the station of both Elevated Railroads and within two blocks of the Long Island Railroad station, whereas the present location is reached by but two lines of street cars. The removal Is In response to a popu lar demand, and unirersil assurances of approval have been received of the contemplated change. The Company Is managed, under the control of Its Board of Directors, by the surviving members of the late firm, aided by its well knowu, reliable and experienced staff of employees. Messrs.Lyman S. Burnham and Hugh Boyd, and Mr. John M. Conklln, for many years associated with the late firm, have entered Into an agreement with the Company to remain In Its service until July 1st, lSJti, and for such longer period as their services may be required.
