A sum mary of results make a satisfactory record. In every aspect it was an improvement on the same month last year. Conditions were better, money was easier, the volume of trade larger and confidence greater. Bank clearings bear out this position. There was a steady, healthy growth from beginning to end. Iiocal activities received a decided forward impulse. There was no "boom" in anything. Everything bore the stamp of wise caution and substantial prosperty. There is no guesswork in this. Figures pertaining to money, stocks and real estate appearing in other parts of this column bear out everything here said. Pcnn Avenue Still Active. It was ascertained yesterday that the Fourth nvenue deal involving a 12-story building has not been consumated so far as the purchase of the property is concerned, but it is in good shape and almost certain to go through. It is understood that the price demanded for the 60 feet of frontaee required for the building is very close to SICO.000. Dickering for Acreage It was stated several months ago that the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was negotia ting for upward of 100 acres in the Hazel wood district Nothing further could be learned about this deal until yesterday, when information was received leading to the opinion that the railroad has no con nection with it. It was stated on good au thority that the probable purchasers are locil and Philadelphia capitalists, and that in the event ot their obtaining possession ot the property they will plat and put it on the market. The parties interested are pro ceeding with unusual secrecy, making it im possible to get the inside facts. Hazelwood is expanding 60 rapidlv that many think a new subdivision would find a quick market. Architects and Smoke. A well-known business map made this in teresting statement 3csterday: "Local arch itects are taking the smoke question by the horns, as it were. I have been informed that nearlv ail of the plans under consider ation for large buildings requiring boiler plants lor heating and motive power con template the use of smoke consumers. They think smoke will have to go sooner or later, and with the concurrence of owners desire to put all important buildings under their their supervision in a position to as sist or expedite the reform." After Kaphl Transit. Etna borough is ambitious. The people, determined not to be . behind Sharpsburg and other enterprising places, are taking steps to improve their transportation facili ties by building an electric road connecting them with Allegheny. The Citizens' Trac tion Company might have headed off this scheme by runninga branch of their Sharps burg extension into Etna, but somehow overlooked this golden opportunitv to monopolize both sides of the river. Hence the present movement The road is looked upon as a necessity, and its effect upon the material development of Etna, by bringing into the market a large amount of acreage, will be immediate and radical. Points in Life In so ranee. Attention is called to the advertisement of the 3Iutual Eeserve Fund Life Associa tion ii! another column. It has had a most successtul career. Commencing in 1881, without a dollar of capital, it has now a surplus reserve fund exceeding ?3,155,000 and a premium income of more than S4.000.- 000 it has paid upward of $12,000,000 in death claims, written nearly 5400,000,000 of insurance, and established successtul agen cies in nearly every healthy country in the world. It is lcaiiied from the published statements of the association that its new business for 1891 exceeds S50.000.00ll. being over ?10,000,000 in excess of the business written in 18!)0. The advertisement notes that it has already saved its members over 530,000,000 in reduction of premiums, the cost of a 520,000 policy being about the same as the rate charged "for a 510,000 policy issued by old system companies. The iact that the Mutual Ueserve has beenofiiciallycxamiued and recommended by ten different insur ance departments and byseveral eminent actuaries is conclusive evidence, from the most reliable source, that the company is worthy of confidence. i:nsine News nnd Gossip. Henry Clews & Co. say: "The past week in Wall street lias been one of incgular move ments, the outcome of the bear raids of the pievious week. The lato bear demonstra tions produced a good deal of dislocation of speculative interests and navo developed a considerable amount of short contracts; which has prolonged the pollcy'of attack and caused, within the nast week, a succes sion of smart skirmishes between the two sides. "One noticeable feature of the market is the absence of any definite expectations as to the luture of the loreign markets for American securities. If any are returned, they do not affect prices here; for the loason that the local abundance or money creates an extraordinary carrying power and be cause that poner Is likely to be long main tained. As to the chances or any important foreign demand, that is little calculated upon as an element In thl3 market. "The course or external happenings has favored the bull Interest. CHIC'AGO Wheat ruled dull and lower to-day. The news was nearly all bearish; local sentiment was in accord with it, and the offerings were in excess of the demand. Cables vero depressed and lower, with domestic markets tending downward. The export business for the week was nearly $1,000,000 bushels less than the week previ ous, and tho trade was figuring on an in crease or 500,000 bushels in the visible supply. Finally the continuous stream of offerings began to tell, and buyers drawing ont, there was a recession from e irly figures. Closing cables showed no improvement. and in the opinion of some dealers it begins to look as if uiopehnd become Indifferent to our market, as If stocks abroad were un usually lanre. Tho avoragc prices for the week were 3c loner. The loreign situation caused renewed selling nnd inci eased weak ness. May opened c lower at DOJJc, which proved to bo the blithest price or the dav; worked slowly off to 90Vc; firmed up a little, then weakened to tS9Jc; sttengthened on covering bv shorts near the close, bnt cloesd easy at 90Jc. Corn shuwed considerable firmness in the early part or the session in spite of weak cnbles and selling, but weakened later in sympathv with the weakness in wheat and piovisions. Shorts were not doing much in the way of covering, while some of tho late buyers were liquidating freely. May started at 40Jc, firmed np to 41Jc, weakened to 40. and closed at 40Jc. Oats quiet and easy. May shows a loss of Hogs Products lower. The weakness in grains was felt sympathetically, though there were several Httlo rallies during tho session, and the close shoos a loss or only 5c in pork, E7Ko in lard, and 2c in ribs. , The leading lutures rangen as follows, as cor rected by John M.
