HOEE COKSUHEBSKETUMTO COAL In Iipert Eays the Natural Fuel "Will Play Out This Tear. COLOXEL SELLERS' TALLOW DIP BEATEN It is like leaving the "warm precincts of ,the cheerful day" and going out into gloom and damp fosr to most people to think of jiving up natural gas fires, but yesterday teemed to convince tna most sceptical inat jty another winter tiiey must go bacli to coal, and some thought it as well to get there at once, stating that they would shut off the stuff at furthest at next settlement day. After the first shiver is over most people come to the conclusion that after all bituminous coal isn't such bad fuel much better than corncobs and buffalo chips. Those who had taken the precaution to put in asbestos fronts in thcirgrates or sheet iron stoves in their rooms were in tolerable shape, but a gas lire in an open grate yester day was a "barren ideality" worth no more thin Colonel Sellers' tallow dip behind a nica plate in the stove. Yesterday was the worst one yet, but fortunately the weather wasn't vcrr cold. At the Central Stock Tards the cue fixtures were taken out for good. Mr. Korte, restaurant keeper, com plained that he had gone to the office of the Philadelphia Company to pay his gas bill and ak why, as in the world of chance, water when put over a gas fire was as like o freeze a boil, and the Superintendent re plied that he ought to be thankful that he had any gas at all. In most of the restaurants about the Diamond Market the cooks were using Btore boxes to roast meat -and bake bread, in addition to what little gas they Could get. In some law offices coal and natural gas combined kept Blackstonians from freezing The Court House boilers were mainly heated with coke. The Citizens Insurance people and Arbuckles & Co. had added coal stoves and were using both kinds of fuel in separate stoves. Attorney C K. Yeager stated that there was gas in the morning, but at noon the Allegheny Heating Companv's supply had become so short that on Stockton avenue if a woman turned suddenly the disturbance of the air by her skirts t ould extinguish all the fires in a house, and these instances were camples ot what could be heard in air di rections. The trouble seems to be, as George I. "Whitney says, that while the Philadelphia Company has considerable gas. it hasn't enough to make much pressure on 700 or 800 miles of pipe. He exhibited thedaily records of pressure on the Bridgewater Gas Com panv's pipes where there is sufficient for all purposes. The pressure varies there from 50 to 5 pounds, and as five ounces makes a strong pressure for domestic use the dif ference of supply between that company and the Philadelphia Company is very strongly marked. The latter hadn't a dram pressure in some houses. Mr. Whitney raid the companv could wiggle through this winter and will have a sufficient sum mer supplv, but the jie will be up by next winter. He also stated that i was the set tled policy of the Bridgewater Company to have's fresh well come in every CO days during the winter, as it not only contri buted to keep up the pressure, but the demonstration made by letting a new roarer in occasionally had a benehcial action on old wells. Tor Lung Troubles Alvraj-s Reliable. TJffxk Black Eddy. Bucks Co., Pa., November 24, 1891. Dr. D. Javne & Son: Gentlemen I was a boatman for a good many years on the Delaware and Lehigh Canal, and being continually exposed to all kinds of bad weather, frequently contracted severe colds which wculd lay me up for weeks. The most severe cold I ever got Ecttled on my lungs. I had very severe pains all through my chest and under my shoulder blades. My throat was sore, and it seemed that the air passages were all closing up. I could not sleep at night owing to the distressing cough. My misery was so great I did not know what to do with myself. All medicines failed tc bring me an v relief. A friend vi ho had been similarly afflicted and cured by Dr. D. Jayne's Ex pectorant, advised me" to try it, and before I had finished taking the second bottle J was a well man. I think Dr. D. Jayne's Expertorant is the best medicine in the world for coughs and lung diseases, and I do conscientiously recommend it to all that are afflicted as I was. A. F. Harwick.
