0 'VT w 7T w THE PITTSBURG DISPATCtH, WEDNESDAY, 'JANUARY 13, 189a k I BATTLE LIKES DRAWN. Local Union 230, of the Brotherhood of Carpenters, Suspended.- SOW A FIGHT FOR SUPREMACY. Many Brotherhood Men "Will Join Amalgamated Carpenters. the EOME GENERAL INDUSTRIAL NOTES Local union 230, of the Brotherhood ot Carpenters, has been suspended from the national body. This was not a surprise to those who were familiar with the strife which has existed between the local and the national body. It started before the strike ol last May and had grown in bitterness right along until last Friday night, when the local was suspended. This action was kept from the public un til yesterday, when E. A. Holmes, who has been the ringleader' of the Brotherhood's opposition, informed a Dispatch repor ter of it. Mr. Holmes said: "You know how the trouble started. List winter hen the vote was taken to decide whether we would strike, the ballot was dtcidcdly against striking. Cntipl by Last summer's Striko. "The District Council gobbled the reports, however, and declared the strike. This ac tion was opposed by many members of the Brotherhood. I was especia?ly opposed to it and begun a fight against this illegal pro cedure. I was tried just after the conclu sion of the strike and acquitted. General Secretary V. J. McGuire had me tried attain for having given an interview to The Dis patch "on July 15, 1S9L I was ncain acquitted." McGuire took an appeal from this decision to the General Executive Board. That body ordered L'30 to try me again, bnt it refused and the mat ter lias been hancing fire ever since. "Becentlv 1 was elected to represent 230 in the District Council I had twice filled this Dosition before, and had always a sood following. Assoouasthe 'gang found I was elected, they wrote to McGuire advising the suspension of 230, w hich he promptly did. They have already organized a new union out of the lew members in 230, who were riot acaiust the Brotherhood. The con servative and free thinking element though Mere excluded. Carpe ntcrs Desert the Brotherhood. "The outcome of the suspension will be that nearly all ol the members of i230 and 600 or TOO other members of the Brother hood will leave it. They will either join the Amalgamated Association of Carpenters or go it alone free from all unions. The thing most probable is that we will join the Amalgamated. AVe do not want any strikes, and think that by square dealing with the builders we willbe treated fairlv. "Another reason why the Brotherhood wanted to get rid of us "was so they could order another strike next May. Its unions are already taking votes on the question, and every possible means is being used by them to get the other trades to join them. There are not more than COO or 700 carpen ters in the city who will join in a strike." lions Faintcrs in Session. The Master House Painters and Decora tors' Association of Pennsylvania convened at Harrisburg to-day, and will remain iu session tv. o days. A hundred delegates are present, among them President Titus Ber gcr, TV. Lw Antrim, George Butler, M. D. Cohen, Charles McCartr. "William Peglev, Joseph IS. Scattergood, G. A. Sexaner, J. O. Shepherd, Andrew Shorigi, Pittsburg; J. I Boardman, Allegheny. Governor 1'atterson welcomed the delegates in an ad dress on the value of organization. The re port6're?d were enennraging. Yicc President Carney, who has been in vestigating the trouble at Homestead, yes terday said: "There will be no conflict be tween the management of the Homestead mill and the Amalgamated Association over the discharge of the shear crew. The men made a mistake and have seen their error. I think they will all be back to work in a day or twos as the raanaccment is inclined to'deal leniently with them under the cir cumstances. In all events there will not be o. strike atHomestead." Awaitlnc the Action of the Officials. J. H. Jansen, the financial secretary and treasurer of the Gilt dse Lodge of the Switchmen's Mutual Aid Association, is still missing. Jansen had all the books of the lodge at his house, and the family refuse to give them up. The lodge is now waiting the action of the grand o5cers, who will be here next Sunday. JalO-llS-MWT Is the special bnsiness of BLACK & BAIRD; they have been doing it for years 'have a large corps of efficient and thoroughly trained men; know how much rent a property should bring and how and where to get good tenants who will pay it They have in many cases been able to obtain two or three times as much rent as the owner or some old fogy agent had been getting. They can compel ''slow" tenants to pay up where an owner cannot They ray taxes look after them carefully, pay insurance and attend to repairs under owners' in structions economically, all without extra charge. They charge but a very moderate commission for rent collecting and can save ten to a hundred times its amount for the owner every year. They render monthly itemized statements with check. If you do not know them almost any bank or well-known business man in the city will, and if you ask them will tell you that they are reliable. They advertise your property free of cost in their rent bulletin, which is mailed regularly'to all applicants until they arc suited. Their facilities for ob taining the' best Tents for downtown businessproperties are nnsurpassed.bav ing a large list of applicants for good storerooms from all t sections of the United States. .
