The Right or a Borough to Collect Vehicle License Is on Trial Tho Measure It VartBcalarly Aimed at the Oil Men. The question as to whether a borough can collect a vehicle tax from a non-resident will soon come before the courts for a decisive settlement. As the taxpayers of Coraopolis'refused to allow the Council to borrowTOoner tho Committee on Ways and 'Means decided to lay a vehicle tax on pro fessional. teamsters reaching out far enough to catch any who hauled for others than themselves. The friends of the meas ure said it was for the purpose of making men who hauled for the oil men help keep the streets in order, it being asserted that they did moredamage to the roads than all other haulers combined. Its opponents said the object was merely to ease the bur den on heavv property holders. They charged that-there should be no discrimina tion and that all who owned -teams or rigs'of any kind should be required to take out the license or else more. They argued that if such restrictive policy were to be persisted in Council would act wisely to buy posts and boards and fence in the town. Some of the teamsters kicked and carried the matter into court after a Justice of the Peace had decided against them, but Judge Slagel decided that the ordinance was dust-proof. John Trunick, however, a Moon town ship farmer, wasn't satisfied and got Attor ney Osborne to take the case into court. Some people said that Trunick was charged with the license because he hauled milk into the borough to sell, but it seems he did some hauling tor the oil men, but denies that hc.is a professionul teamster. Worth a Guinea a Box. FromiFame, a London Newspaper.' MrXs , a chemist of Liverpool, re- ceivedia bill for the amount of 28$. from Thomas Beecham, St. Helens. Mr. S , being at the time in pecuniary difficulties, pondered for a considerable time how to meet tie demand. At last a bright idea flashed"' across his mind, and he said, joy fully: 'Yes, I willsend Beecham a box of his own pills he says himself they are worth a guinea- a box and seven shillings in cash." This hedid. In the course of a few days great was the surprise of Mr. S to find that Beecham had forwarded the receipt at tached to which were the words, "Cash only in future. Thomas Beecham. " . In the United States Beechani's Pills are also advertised as universally acknowledged to be "worth a guinea a Ijox" but that they are for sale by all druggists at 25 .cents. Beecham evidently thinks it best to hedg against such bright fellows as the Liverpool druggist turning up on this side (of the water. B.&B.
