Ewine Offered liberally at Shade Lower. rrices a CHOICE SHEEP AND, LAMBS HIGHER Omci or Pittsburg Dispatch, ) Wednesday; Dec. S3. There were about 85 carloads of cattle on sale at Eat Liberty yards this -week against 95 loads last week. "While there are a few bunches of holiday beeves on sale which were better than anything; received of late, the general average of offerings was below late average. The highest price paid this week was 55 20 for 11 head, which were the best of a load and were sold to an East End butcher. In carload lots $4 50 was the top of markets, and very few reached this price. Markets opened strong and active at an ad vance of 10c to 2.)cpercwt on last week's prices. The greatest advance was on tidy- light butcher beeves, which have been in" suon supply for a number of weeks past. The supply of fresh cows was larger this week tnan last, but quality of those offered was low. Demand wtis light and so far as could be learned there were no sales abovo $11) per head, and very few at that price. Veal calves were In fair supply, and the best on sale iv ere sold at CJc per ft. Hogs are still in liberal supply and the markets have w cakened since the beginning of the week, notwithstanding an improvement in quality of offerinz. The highest price paid this week as 4c Der fi. and this price was the exception. SnzErASD Lambs There were not above SO carloads on sale this week, and markets -were active and strong at an advance on all good erodes. Some choice sheep were sold at $5 40. and a few fancy lambs bronght$6 25, these prices being a fnll 253 per cwt above anythingsold the previous week. Common and low erodes of Mieep were as dull and slow as tuey ere last w cek. A X4ve Stock Firm's Itevlew. CHICA Gf. The wheat market opened ex cessively dnll this morning. The feeling was weak and prices were a trifle lower, but there was a turn tor the better. At no time, however, was there any animation or much strength. Cables quoted the English mar kets lower at tne start, and 'domestic mar kets were all heavy. The, local crowd was bearish. Longs bad a, good deal of wheat for sale, but owing to the narrowness of the demand selling was very difficult except at concessions. For a considerable time the price, of May held around 9693Jc There was a report of an approaching cold wave due Friday, and also a rumor that foreigners hud commenced buying at the seaboard. This put a little life into the market and early sellers began to cover. There was some buying for a scalp on the bull sido, as a reaction was re garded as among the things probable, and there was an improvement of about Jc from the bottom, when the market again became slow and prices steady. During the last hour tl)c market eased off some, bnt rallied and closed at the top figures of the day. Corn followed pretty nrhch the same course as wheat. The receipts were S86 cars, but included 78 cars of contract about 20.per cent. This, with the weakness in the other speculative pits, made a heavy market for a time, and the longs liquidated freely. A petiod of more steadiness followed, the high est prices being reached during tho last hour, but there was a slight recession at the close. Oats quiet and steady, scarcely changing during the session. Hog products weak and lower. President Yates, of the Bufialo.Kochester and Pittsburg Bailroad Company, is quoted as saying that the road's earnings are gain ing finely and that the increase will be 575, 000 this month. The road's traffic is simply limited by its carrying capacity. There has been talk of paying a dividend, but some people advise applying earnings tothe pur chase of more equipment Activity at Swissvale. Swissvalc is looking up. Situated about midway between Pittsburg and Braddock, and within easy distance of McKeesport, it possesses manifest advantages for home seekers who want to be convenient to the business centers. The opening of the Palmer estate, 20 acres, gave the place a decided forward impulse. Lots are selling last, and. considerable building is being planned for the coming year. Among other prominent people residing in or near Swiss vale are George Gordon, Banker Kelley, of, Braddock, Hon John Dalzell and Attorney Schoyer. G Church, corner of "Web ster and Tunnel streets, is assuming form as fast as the weather will permit " The base ment is nearly completed, and it is ex pected that everything will be ready for the corner stone earlv in January. The edifice will be of stone and brick. Its di mensions are 40x80 feet The Market Well Stocked. lhere is no reason for apprehending a real estate famine in Pittsburg. There is a great deal of property on the market both in the city and suburbs, and will be for some years to come. The trouble is that owners and buyers are unable to look at values through the same glasses. The scarcity of good business stands for rent is a feature which no one can .overlook. This speaks well for the change in the situation of the trans portation interests of the country as com pared with a year ago. The closing weeks 01 tne year arc coming to the front hand somely, the earnings ot 29 roads for the second week of December reflecting an ag gregate gain of 1L08 per cent, while those for the. third week are likely to show up in sun Detter loirq. No Abatement in Strength or Activity in Shares The Gonld Element Still Feels Its Oats A Sudden Spurt in Lacka wanna Chicago Gas Gains. New York, Dec. 23. The stock market abated none of its strength or activity to day, but there was rather more manipula tion, even creating some concessions in many of the leading stocks. TheVander bilt dividends were the. pivot upon which the market turned. The change' in the posi tion of tho foreign element in the market, as indicated by the weakening of the for eign exchange market, now allows the bull ish sentiment of the street to come to the front, and the buying to-day, especially in the afternoon, hadan-airof confidence. London was higher this morning, and for eign purchasing orders were in the market at the opening. The Gould stocks were earlv in the fleld.and the strength displayed by Missouri Pacific and Western .,Union did much to resist tue early pressure and aided materially the subsequent buoyancy. The attack was directed against the Vanderbilts in particular, and Canada Southern and Lake Shore were specially weakfor a time, although their losses were measured by fractions only. Their sharp rally after the action on the dividends became known in dicated sufficiently the character of the early selling. The Grangers were not specially promi nent in the market, but the Industrials were more so, and Chicago Gas and the Cot ton Oil shares were strong all tho way pnt. New England and Lackawanna were' special features in the uownrd movement.the sham spurt in tho latter during the last few min utes' trading being one or the notable events of the day. There was the usual number of sharp gains' among the inactive nnd low priced shares, tho Iowa Centrals and Colo rado Coal making -the most conspicuous gains. The general list, after a strong opening, retired slightly in the forenoon, but rallied fully later In the.dny, notwithstanding tho realizing sales steadily advancing, though the improvement for the day is small ex cept in a few cases. The close was active and strong at or near tne highest figures of the day. Among'the nctive stocks, how ever, only Lackawanna, with a gain of V-A, and Chicago Gas, with , were of special importance. Railroad bonds were somewhat less ani mated than of late, the total sales of all is sues reaching $2,154,000, of which Chicago nnd Erie incomes contributed $182,000, being the only specially active issue on the list. The number of sneciallv stron? bonds was not so large,-but the entire list is higher. The total sales of stocks to-day were 375, 233 shares, including: Atchison, 14413; Can ada Southern, 5,455; Chicago Gas, 20,600; Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western, 18,453; Erie, 17.420:' "Lake -Shore, S.lOOJcOjnuiSvllle'-and Nashville, 3,600; Missouri Pacific, 23,775; North Amorican, 4,375: Northwestern, 6,431; Xew York Central, 6,010: Northern Pacific, preferred, 21,C80; Reading, 22,814; Richmond and West Point, 12.297; St. Paul, 13,450; St. Paul and Omaha, 5 080: Texas Pacific, 3,130; Union Pacific, 16,716; Western Union, 21,125.
