The pro portion of good beeves was lsnrcr this week than it has been for months past. There were no strictly rime cattle offered in car load lots. Markets opened weak and lower for all heavy stock, and there was a decline on this grade ot not les than 25c per cwt. Said an old-time stockman: "Wc haven't had as mean a market for heavy cattle for a year past as we have had this week." Full fleh lightweight beeves weighing from 900 to 1.100 pounds were steady at last week's, prices. The highest price paid in a wholesale way was $4 SO for a carload of Coshocton county, Ohio, cattle, which averaged 3.143 pounds in weight. The same would have brought ."c per pound a week ago. Two very iancy heifers weighing 1,470 pounds were bought bv r.. Tranernmn lroui Holmes ltovlen, Briptrs Jt Co. at JJ3 37J,. This fancy pair was conisneU by Carpenter & Campbell, or Middle! own, In diana, anil were forwarded to Younr & Yflumr, of Johnstown, lor their lioliday trade. Co.: AVc report fcS loads of cattle on salaJIoii tlay wliichwcre principally lrom Chicago, Ohio and Indiana. The uuaiify of Ohio and Indiana cnttlo was very lunch better than lonuer offerings on this market for the pust two months, a largo uor cent ranged in weight from 1,300 to 1,1.10, with fair quality ana good flesh. The-e proved too heavy an.l hijrh-priced for our country trade, and as the Kastern markets were reported to bo in :t demoralized condition it wn im possible to make sale of t-uch gradus -xcept at prices which wo consider strong l4e lower than last week, and lover than Mich cattle have sold here for the past year. The deinsnd was good for smooth light cattle, and this grade sold readily at strong last week's prices. A few prime Beeves were offered and sold for holiday trade at $5 uo fi 57',. Tliat and the Depressed Condition of Wheat, Bean Down the rrice or Corn Europe Has Been Over-Buylnjj Wheat So Clianje In Provisions. CHICAGO Wheat was weak to-day and prices ruled lower. The conditions were full of discouragement for holders and there was a sUady selling pressure most of the day with u sluggish demand, and trade was dull and narrow. The weakest aspect of the case was the situation in Europe, where holders seem to have lost confidence and turned free sellers. For some days the situa tion there has been growing worse, and now there appears to be a general slauehter of the longs. Europe has been KOttiug more than it was consuming lor some weeks, and this has finally had its effect- To-daymost of the private cables reported the market sick, both on the continent and in the Tinted Kingdom. Domestic markets have sympathized with tho conditions abroad and are tending downward. Local bears sola freely and longs w ere also inclined to let go their hold ings. The decline met some stop loss orders whose execution added to the weak ness. The buying was confined largely to the covering of shoit sales, which thotr a satisfoctorv profit. May opened at 97c ncniiist 97Cc at tlieclose yesterday, broke to !5J.c. reacted to ic. weakened again dur ii g'the last hour, selling off to JOc, rallied to 9tJjie and closed at 9GJi,c. Corn was weak and lower on all tho fntutes. The w eakness in the wheat pit was ono of the depressing factors, but the chief one was the improved inspection, which was 57 cars out or 401 inspected in a larcer jicr cent than lor some time previous. This discouraged the bull party,' and their fears were augmented by the statement that at least one Chicago elevator was making contract corn at the rate of several thou sand bushels a day by drying out its excel lent No. 2 new. Word was also received from other points that a good deal of corn is now gradlr.s contract, and tho proportion is cx-ii-cted to increase: so shorts felt more at ease and bought while the scllinir by longs was free. A slump was the result. Decem ber opened Hc down at 3fto, sold off" w itbout reaction to 47c, a decline of 13c from the high price of a few days ago, reacted on pur chases to take profits, and closed at 40c. .lanuarv opened lc lower at Ufic, sold as low as 43ic and closed at IS'c. Oats w ere quiet, steady and without feat ure. Hog product were steady and inclined to firmness, although the trade was light. Re ceipts of live hogs were smaller than esti mated, and prices at the yards were quoted 10c higher. This tended to keep the product steady, notwithstanding tho weakness in wheat and corn. The property consists of a lot 184x170 feet, with one of the finest dwellings in the East End. Some April Changes. A number of important changes will occur about April 1. Business men with singular unanimity join in saying that nearly all the unfavor able conditions nnder which the year opened, and which handicapDed almost every line of activity until late in the summer, have practically disappeared. Confidence has succeeded timidity. The financial situation has undergone a com plete reversal within the last six months. Money is easy at all of the great business centers. Pittsburg national banks have nearly $1,500,000 m excess of the legal requirements, while private capitalists arc strong in resources. At the beginning of the year, and for sometime afterward, several important local corpor ations were deeply involved. These troubles have been adjusted. So far as can be seen there is nothing to cause apprehension. There is clear sailiug ahead. Everything invites a forward movement all along the line, vith plenty of material to work on, wiih confidence practically restored, with money to be had almost "for the" asking, there is every reason to believe that Pitts burg is on (he eve of a business revival which will prove the most notable in her history. These are the conditions and prospects under which the year is drawing to a close. Investors Are Moving. There is a brisk inquiry for property in Shadyside, on Fifth avenue, and it is "safe to assert that in a short time practically everything on the market will have changed ownership. It is known that negotiations are pending for several parcels aggregating 814 feet, with a view to substantial improve ment next season. At the present rate of absorption it will be but a short time until everything is. takeA np, leaving to future investors only one course, that of buying out others at whatever figures they may see fit to name. Closing Bond Quotations. as a rule over last nighfs figures, and slowly advanced without making any marked im provement; but the realizing in tho' final trading caused the loss of manyof the early gains. Thestrong stocks, however, wero held well up to tho best flsures. Among the inactive shares Kansas and Texas preierrcd and Manhattan, the latter selling ex -dividend, which was recovered with something in addition, were most conspicuous for strength. The market finally closed rather heavy at slight concessions from the best prices, but with most stocks still showing fractional gains for tho day. Chicaso Gas is np 1 per cent to-nignt, ana Northwest ern 1 per cent. The total sales of stocks to-day were 224,483 shares, inclndinc: Atchison, i,G15: Canada Southern, 5,550: Chicago Gas, 19,760: Erie, 9,900; Missouri Pacific, 5,950: Northwestern, 5 373; New York Central, 5,360: Northern Pa cific preferred. 24,300; Jjew Euirland, 3,100; Richmond and West Pfiint, 8,100; St. Paul, 19.200; Union Pacific, 11,900. Railroad bonds shoned a continued in crease In the demand for all leading issues, and the sum of the transactions to-day was g' eater than for any day for months, while prices showed a steady improvement in all portions of the list. Tho strong. h was more pronounced than in shares and bettor main tained throughout the day. The sales reached $2 515,000. and the Chicago and Erie incomes were again specially prominent for both activity and strength, followed by Erie seconds and others. Country Produce (Jobbing Prices) Cool weather has given a fresh stimulus to poultry trade, and, while prices are un changed, demand is more active. Fresh laid eggs are so scarce as to be hardly quota ble. Best storage stock is quiet llairy products are fairly steady at prices quoted. Country butter is still in supply beyond de mand, and markets are slow for all under fancy grades, oleo having the preference. Beceipts of potatoes have declined greatly the past week or two, but there is so far no improvement in markets. In tropical fruit lines we note an improved demand and bet ter prices for bananas.
