FEATURES OF MONET AJCD SPECULATION If Northsiders have a hohby it is Cali fornia avenue. They regard it with as much affection as the Eomnns did their Appian or Flaminian way, and have followed its development from an idea into a fact with great interest. Its completion ha3 been de layed by the clashing interests in and out of Councils, largely growing ont of the rivalry of street railways. This has severely taxed the patience of the people in the lower part of Allegheny and delayed much valuable improvement. Still, work has proceeded and considerable progress made. It is expected the road trill he opened as far down as Emsworth during the coming year. It is being paved with Ligonier stone trom Island station to within a short dis tance of Wood's Run. There is ample reason for the high expec tations of benefits to accrue from the com pletion of this great highway. It will open up one of the finest districts in the countrj. Allegheny, as has been frequently pointed out, is badly in need of an outlet for home seekers and builders. Owing to the inac cessibility of the hill district, the valley is the only available quarter. It possesses many natural advantages and attractions. All that is needed to make it the East End of the Northside is improved locomotion. These are the considerations focus public interest on California avenue and make the people so anxious for its completion. Heal estate owners are, perhaps, more deeply in terested in this work than any other class of citizens. Its consummation will bring several thousand acres of land into the mar ket. There is more valuable acreage in this district than in any other within a conven ient distance of either city. 'Even in its backward state this Northside artery has greatly stimulated activity in realty. In fact, it is the source and center of nearly all the material progress on the Northside. The completion of a number of fine dwellings in the Kidgeview plan, which is controlled by A. Z Byers & Co., was mentioned some time ago. Since that time manv others have been started, the most notable of which are those of Attorney Goehring, Architect Osterling and Con tractor Morrison. Among those who will build next spring are Dr. J. II. "VVr'ght, Captain Robinson and Contractor Eose. It is understood that a land syndicate, recent ly organized, is negotiating for several tracts near Emsworth, aggregating about 100 acres, with a view to building houses for sale. The outlook is distinctly favora ble for busy times in the valley next year. Business News mml Gossip. The Snaman building on Federal street, Allegheny, is being repaired. The interior will be entirely rebuilt and a new front put in. Plans are being made for the M. E. Church to be erected on the Kink property, Allegheny, purchased from the Denny heirs. There is a lively inquiry for stores on the Northside. Yesterday a gentleman from Erie was looking for a stand on Federal or Ohio streets. The representative of an Eastern firm wrote to a real estate agency a few days ago for a place in which to open a large arygoods store. BOTH STOCKS AKD BONDS ARE trVE LIER AND BROADER. WMder Transactions in Bonds Than for Many Weeks Some Early Pressure With Later Recoveries and Advances A Back Seat for Industrials. New Yore, Dec. 9. The stock market to day was again more active and strong, the movement showing a decided widening of speculation, while one of tho most en couraging signs of the day was that the stocks which are considered to have a future attracted a large portion of tho attention and scored the largest gains. There was no lack of opposition to the ad vancing tendency, however, and some of the leading shires wero subjected to pressure which, while it failed to cause any material decline.served to prevent any upward move ment in those stocks. The demand, es pecially in the first and last hours, was urgent, however, and stocks which weie forced off in the forenoon generally recov eied their losses befoie the close. Tho opening was firm, and the strength of the Yandorbilts was again prominent. While that group became the special feature of the day, all the low-priced members mak ing marked gains befoie tno end of the day. The rest of the listfollowed.it a distance un der the pressure, and Eock Island gnve w ay a large fraction. The market tnen developed dullness and stagnation for a time, but the demand again Decime so heavy that the shorts were frightened into covering some of the contracts made dnnng theearlier por tion of the day, and the upward movemont in the late dealings became most pro nounced. The Chesapeake nnd Ohios, the Nickel Plates, the Omihas and Milwankcs, Lake .Shore and Westen. were all specially activ e and scored heavy gains, anu were iouoweu by Pittsbuig and Western preferred, Iowa Central and some others, while in the usual ly active list the Erie stocks were the special featme. The activity was legarded as an Indication that London was disposed to take back some or the stock sold lately. The In dustrials wero inclined to droop, and occu pied a much less prominent position than they have of late, vv hich may also be said of the Gould shares. The trunk lino shares were tho leaders nnd the Grangers followed.
