PRICES ARE KOW TENDING HIGHER, Receipts of Coffee Large and All the Signs Point to a Prop. FOOTWEAR PROMISES TO GO HIGHER Office of Pittsburg Dispatch, ) Tuesday. Oct. 6, 1S9L ( By reference to domestic market column it will be seen that dairy products are tend ing toward a higher level of prices. For a v eek or two past there has been a scarcity of high grade creamery butter in this mar ket. From all trade centers comes the re port of 6hort snpplics in dairy product lines. The shortage is explained by the hot Sep tember weather which dried up pasturage and lessened supplies of mi.k all over the dairy regions of the "West. The Sep tember heat, while of immense advantage to the corn crop, wa other than advnntaccou to dairv products. September make ot clieee is expected on the market tliN week and supply will fall below expectations of a month ago. Prospects are for higher price of cheese In the next -n eek or two. The Sep tember a row; lit according to some estimates lessened the milk supply almost 51 per cent andweare now rjjininp the fruits of this shortage in advancing prices of dairy products. The Coffee Outloolc. In the past week coffee has declined 3e per It, in a. Jobbing way, and it is by no meant certain that bottom prices are j et reached. Kecelptsarc still very heavy in New York. Tlio total of IMo received last week was 100,000 bags. A larpo pioportion or this has gone into consumption, having been sold to arrive. There is a diversity or views among Jobbers as to the future of coffee markets. Some nold that bottom lias been reached, and that now is a good time to buy. Others hold that wo are not yet at the bottom Following are litest statistics of visible snnplv of Itio coffee as compiled bv the Boston Herald- 'The dailv Rio cable rc-orts the market steadv, with receipt of 13.0C0 bags, with 20, 000 baes or Santos. The stock at Itio Is re ported at 315,000 bags: same time last year 162,000 bass. Tliowecklv Kio cable quotes that market steady, with exchange at 15Jid. The daily nverace of receipts for the w eek has reached 17,300 bags. The shipments to Europe for the week w ere 46,000 bans, and to the Cnited States 55 000 bass. The New York visible supply of coffee is now re ported at tST.SH bags; same time a year ago, 372,777 bags; same time in l, 480,712 bags. The total receipts of Itio coffee on the crop to September 21 have been 1,21.1003 bags; same time Inst vcar, 72(5,000 bags-: samo time in 1SS9, 376 bags. The receipts in both Itio and Santos to September 21 have been 1,722, C01 bass. The stocks in Rio and Santos in Xcir Tork and afloat for the United States show a total or 1,000,974 bags. As to Footwear. The. shoe and leather trade which has been depressed the past few months begins to give evidenco of revival. The large num ber of assignments of Boston shoe houses bad a depressing influence on trade in the months of July, August and September. In the past week tlicro has been n favorable turn to trade, and it is evident that the worst is past. The Chicago Shoe ami Leather Rericiv has this to say of the situation: "Two years ago the leather trade passed through a financial crisis, and was i ebr.il t tip-Mi a sounder basis, a basis or rerorm and retrenchment, which is now virtually doing a world of cood tor the tanner and the leather dealer. The curtailment in the pro duction of leather has, jieihaps, never been so marked since the period oi our Civil War, a, it has been the present season. Leather lias not been piled np in the great store bouses in the fnce of an ab-ence of demand this year. On the other hand the output of leather has not exceeded the demand, but stocks have been growing beautifully less. The law of supply and demand is more equally balanced at this time than for years. There is no question on this point. If this state of affair shall continue it will domoie than any other one tlumr to re establish credit and confidence in the tiade of this country." GRAIN AND PROVISIONS. Wheat Stronger Under a Preponderance of Ttnllish News Corn Weak and Irreg ular, but Tartly Sustained by Wheat Oats Quiet Provisions IVeak and Lower. CHICAGO Wheat was strong and higher to-day on a combination of bullish news and local sentiment. It was reported early that Russia v ould soon prohibit the exportation or all cereals, and this was given added strength later by a Taris cable dispatch that Russian wheat exports were about to be pro hibited, and that the Pari market was strong and advancing. The London Timet was quoted as saying that the Enclish wheat crop was not turning out as -well as Mas ex- fectcd. Rains were still reported in the lakotas: the receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth were very light: and the continued cold weather in the winter wheat belt, it was thought, ould restrict theacreageof winter heat for the next crop. Domestic markets showed much firmness and continued to improve in prices. On the other band, as bearish items, Liver pool was c lower, and the British visible supply hau increased 2.000 00i nu-diels dur ing the past week. Short w ere nervous and disposed to cover, but found vcrv little wheat for sale, which only increased their dcire to get it. Thcv were aided in the carlv part of the session by good purchasing order from fCe w Toik. There was free buy ing by the leading commission houses, arid the trading becamo somew hat excited. December opened at !te38'ic, advanced Fharpl-to !WJc, but eaeil off to 98c, and stood at 9ic at noon, airainst 97c at the close yesterday. During tlio last hourwheat became easier, and after selling at 99Kc fell to 9c. but closed steady at9c. The most urgent shorts had covered by noon, and some of the early buyers began to realize, on the advance. Late cables reported Berlin SK marks, eqnal to 3c a bushel, lower on wheat; Antwerp 25 centimes lower, and Paris 20 centimes lower. Late Liverpool cables, how ever, reported the maiket firm and higher. Corn was quite irregular, and at one time bad a severe slump, but the streugth in beat finally caused it to recover part of the decline. October onened unchanged nt 5-Jic and sold quickly to 52Jc. Then, on free selling by some of the ing operators, tho market became very heavy and there was a quick drop to 01Vc; hut when the pressure was removed the market recovered some and was helped by the strength in w heat, helling back to 52Jc, and off to 52c. During the last hour the market lecame firmer on the light estimated receipts for to-morrow, October advancing to 52c, but it Boon cased on the free selling and rumors of more new corn arriving in Kansas City and St. Louis in fine and dry condition, and sold off to and closed at51JJc Oats were quiet and with narrow fluctua tions closed at yesterday's last prices. Hog products were weak mid lower, influ enced a good deal by the weakness in corn and the absence of buyers, and the close mows a loss of 12i-0c on pork; 710c on lard and a like amount on ribs. Movement In Acreage. It was reported yesterday that a tract of about 100 acres, on the Panhandle Railroad, n short distance below the city, was about to pass into the possession of a Land Im provement Comptny, for sub-division next spring. The prospect of rapid transit lacilities is stirring up things in tho W est End. While no one looks for a rush this fall or winter, tho conditions justify expectations of an active movement. Inquiries are numerous and sales frequent, and in many instances of great importance, unless checked by something not at present In sight or anticipated, the improvement will goon. A heavy spring trade is thought to be prncticallv assured. Tho outlook for Pittsburg realty is full of confidence and promise. The extension of rapid transit facilities will be an important factor in future oper ations, and is being watched with great interest bv owners and dealers in realty. It will bring into market a largo scope of territory nt present unavailable for resi dence purposes. This will augment the supply of lots and keep prices within rea sonable bounds. lousiness News and 2oss!p. While the local monejr market is somewhat sensitive, there are influences at work which it is thought will not only prevent a strin gency but result in greater ease. Inteiest and dividend disbursements this mouth will set free a large amount of funds, which will seek reinvestment. Receipts of gold fromf Europe are heavy. The demand from the West is falling off. These aie important factors in the situation, and should main tain the supply of working capital ut a point beyond the power of manipulation to ad versely offset it. Locally there is no stress, and noapprehensidn of any. Conditions and movements at the banks yesterday wero practically repetitions of those of the previous days of tho month a little better In some lines and about tho same In others. There was a good supply of funds an active call for loans, moderate discounting and liberal depositing. Tho day's work was encouraging, and an earnest of better times coming. IIOLDKRS TIOHTBN TnEIR GKir AND OFFER GOODS SPARINGLY: Tho Active List Narrowed to Two of tho Tractions Other Properties Wanted in Vain Bullish Feeling and Values Stlffer Status of Electric. There was considerable snap in the mar ket yesterday, particularly at the last call. Buying orders appeared to be numerous and bidding was biisk, but there was hardly anything for sale. Theie was no business except making quotations at the second and third calls. At the first 100 shares of Pittsburg Traction sold nt 40, and 170 shares of Birmingham Traction at 17. The feeling was bullish especially on tho part of holders. All of the Westinghouso interests were strong. Electric and Switch and Signal improved their position, and Philadelphia Gas and Airbrake held their own. Slight concessions would have re sulted in heavy salos. Pittsburg Traction advanced a fraction at the middle call. The rest of this class of properties held advanced ground. Lustor i eakened a trifle. New Tork and Cloveland Gas Coal was bid up to S9Jc, offered at 41c. Kinks and Insurance received little atten tion. Mr. George Westinghonse indulged in some talk during the day. He said the Elec tric and Manufacturing Company would soon bo in better condition than ever before. It will be free from floating debt. lie added that certificates for assented stock would be rendvinafew days. The majority of the stock is held outside, taking the control away from this city. Tho Duquesue Traction road is making a brave effort to overcome its difficulties, nnd all who have a regard for Pittsburg's pros perity hope it will succeed. An Absence of Buying Orders A Depressed Opening Followed by a Better Feeling Atchison Still Leads in Activity Erie Securities a Late Feature. New Tork, Oct 6. The stock market to day, to the surprise of tho stroet and many operators.falled to display either the volume of business or the width of fluctuations usual of late, and tho market at times was positively dull. Thenbsencoof buying or ders of moment was most marked, and throughout the day the professionals and tho trading element hammered' the list per sistently. The opening showed that tho efforts for lower figures begun yesterday had not been given up, and these efforts received encour ment from the heavy selling .for foreign ac count right at the opening, which resulted in making tho first prices in tho active stocks generally large fractions lower than last evening's fignreB. Tho early demand, how ever, was sufficient to turn tho course of prices in the upward direction, and for some time the market presented a strong front, with Missouri Pacific, Rock Island and the Bituminous Coal stocks showing great strength, Tennessee Coal rising 3 per cent to 41J. The hammoring, however, was inces sant, and when the demand slacked away prices went back again, and in the down ward movement Rock Island was specially prominent under heavy pressure. Atchison still led tho list in point of activity, but there was a marked falling off in the volume of business from that or tne last few uays, ana its movements .were made in narrow limits throughout the day. The general list displayed littlo or no fea ture of interest at anv part of tho day, but as a rule Missouri Pacific, Wheeling and Lake Erie preferred, Lake Shore, Lacka wanna, ana cnicago, ournngton anu yuincy showed tho greatest strength. In the after noon the Erie securities became the great feature of the day, and the stock became the leader in activity, while rising 1J per cent from the rorenoon. The prclerred stocks and tbo bonds followed ana tlio strength shown had a good influence on other parts ot the list, most stocks again be ing brought up beyond their opening figures. Some of this improvement was lost late in the day, but the market finally closed quiet but firm, generally at insignificant gains over first prices, nnd with most of the list practically at last night's figures. Erie is up 1 per t-ent and Tennessee Coal l,bnt the rest are only slightly changed for tne day. Railroad bonds were affected by the hesi tating temper of the stock list, and while the transactions covered an unusually large number of issues the final changes are quice inegular, although advances aro in a ma jority. Tho totalsaleswero only $1,291,000. The highest and closing quotations were: Atchison In.. 65 (ft 61 Montana 1013I01M Ch & X P5s... 7V 7ti!
