MOBE MONEY NEEDED. United Presbyterian Missions Ham pered for Want of Funds. T.IG SHORTAGE IS THE HOME BOARD Great Jteform That Is Being Done by the Church Abroad. COLORED METHODISTS IN SESSION The second day's attendance at the First Synod of the West of the XT. P. Church was far better than that of the previous day. Moderator J. C "Wilson held devotional ex ercises, after which the reports from the dif ferent institutions of learning which are under the jurisdiction of the Synod were heard and referred to the proper committees. The next half hour was given over to de votional exercises led by Kev. D. F. llc Gill. The afternoon session was devoted to mission work. JJev. T. L-. Scott, a mission ary from India, made a short address. The work there is successful and, he says, is teiore appreciated than that done by other denominations. Special attention is paid to the conversion of children and the or ganization of young people into Sab bath schools. The children, he said, pre easy to interest and in time will, no doubt, evangelize the country. Psalm sing ing, as a specialty of the C P. Church, has become of great interest to the natives, and is preferred to the hymns. The other de nominations have taken hold of the psalm sineing theory, and now hold that it causes better effect among the Eastern people than do the hymns. MOKE MONET FOR HOME MISSIONS. Ttev. Dr. "V. S. Owens reported for the borne mission work. He stated that every hope of the church for perpetuation de pended upon th! strength and encourage ment given to the mis-don labor he repre sented. The work is in a hopefnl condition jmd has grand men to carry out its objects, ltut the one need is more money, and that vnless it is forthcoming serious results may be expected. Rev. Dr. A. G. "Wallace spoke of church extension. He also regretted the lack of fund to establish permanent churches in eery great center of the country. He said tiiat each church should have a warm heart and a warm parlor open all the year, that j oung men micht be comforted in a place that has not the evil association of saloons. Rev. Dr. J. "V. "VVitherspoon spoke on freedmen's work, and while he gave an in teresting address on the eood manifest in the efforts in this line, yet he deplored the ahtpnee of money. The Secretary then read a tabulated and itemized report ot the conditions of these n.issionary departments, it snowed as follows: Foreign Missions Two new missionaries ddfied to the corps of worker, making a total of 69 missionaries, male and female, in India and Kiypt: the death of Mrs. AV. A new po-t ha been established at louderson, X. C. The Church Extension had no figures. The meeting last night was largely given vit to deotional exercises. The topic of he evening was practicably a continuation i the afternoon work on church extension nd missionary labor. Itcv. Dr. "Wallace ike of the future of the church, predict ng a more successful career than ever, lev. II. H. Hervey, I). D., spoke on Miss ionary work abroad. He thought the IT. Chnrcb would eventually control and in 'ueiiceall this field. The young people ok to their methods, and ere working in 11 parts of the world with evident success. Rev. John R. McKce and others spoke in similar .vein. Great stress was laid on the ibnrsof the church in both the home and ireign missions, and the people were urged i keep alive the interest in this branch of linreh work. The synod will meet again this morning, nd will probably end its work to-day. KIKE KEW MINISTERS LICENSED. ashoji Arnett Tells African Methodists to lie Frond or Their Race. The A. M. E. The 'Welsh Enjoy a Fine Programme at the Exposition Battery B to Attend To Bay An Excursion Coining From Cin cinnati The Bain a Great Help. The "Welsh are an enthusiastic people. This was shown last night, when Welsh national airs were given by Cappa s Band. All the famous melodies were rendered to an accompaniment of applause that could hardly be restrained till the end of the number, and there were as many radiant faces as have ever been seen in the Exposi tion at any one time. The managementhad determined that "Welsh day should be memorable, and the large audience that was present when the first notes of the concert rang out last night testified to the apprecia tion of the arrangements made for their benefit. The medley in which all the famous "Welsh airs occurred was really beautiful. The other descriptive piece, "The Blacksmith in the "Woods," however, was just as pleasing, and was wildly ap plauded. To-day the principal feature will be the playing of the "Battle of Gettysburg." Captain Hunt with his Battery B boys, will be present, and there will be cannon accompaniments to the music to reuderthe proper military effect to the composition. This will be the last performance of this famous piece of music at the Exposition this vear, and it is safe to predict that there will be a very large attendance to-night. There is to be an excursion from Cincin nati on the 1st of October. The Exposition management considers this a great compli ment, for Cincinnati is a long way off, and is a big city that can have an Exposition of us uwn ix it wants it. At is cousiuereu uiub the fame of the Pittsburg Exposition must have spread further than was at first sup posed. The rain that was desired for the sake of the Exposition has fallen, and the temperature in the halls was simply delight ful yesterday. Jos. Home Co.s New Exhibit This Week, "Which takes the place of the grand exhibit of the handsomest fur goods in this citv. in cludes, to-day, in their large case, a choice and varied collection of the most desirable styles for this season in ladies' fall and win ter wrans:iu jackets, in the lone ? shapes: in the stylish military-cloth capes; in long car riage and traveling wraps, such as paletots and ulsters, and an unrivaled collection of ladies costumes, for which this house is noted, both in imported and of domestic manufacture, suitable for all occasions, for street and house wear, ranging from the ordinary and neat traveling and house dress to the grand Paris confection, adapted in style and shades to full dress occasions. The moderate prices on all these gar ments will surprise all such customers: as have been educated up to the false belief that everywhere high-class goods meant ex orbitant prices. Hot the least attractive feature of this great display is the show of daintv, cute and taking style's of children's and infants'wear, a department in which this house takes special pride, believing that there is nothing too good, or too pretty, or too nice for the "little folks." AH those who are interested in the cos tuming of their children will find that a visit to the children's department of the establishment of Jos, Home & Co. will afford them especial pleasure, and will give them the last ideas in nil that pertains to children's wear. And this same rule applies here as in the garments for ladies, viz: Lowest prices for choicest goods. It is almost unnecessary to mention that a great many of the garments for ladies and children exhibited by Jos. Home & Co. are stvlcs confined exclusively to them. A "w Restaurant. Those popular caterers, Messrs. Lenz & Kleinschmidt, have opened a first-class res taurant at their former location, corner of Wood street and Sixth avenue, where they will make a specialty of serving Baltimore oysters in the fine styles for which they are noted, thus Insurlngthemselves a large pat ronage. The choicest meats and vegetables will be cooked to order, and meals will be served at all hours between 7 A. St. and ,1150 r. M., except Sunday, when it will be closed. Popcorn "Pop-ular" as Ever.
