Golden Opportunities for Mushroom Farm ing In the Deserted Mines on Mt. Wnsli inqton Only a Moderate Capital Needed and the Market Is Alwajs Good. E. If. Robinson, of Chartiers township, has been experimenting in the culture of mushrooms in a coal pit, and although he has abandoned the business In disgust, his attempt Is a suggestion that might be made profitable. Poter Henderson, a noted KXew York srardener. and author of a text book for truckers, en titled "Gardening for Profit" states that in the New York market the supply has never half equaled the demand, even at tho almost fabulous prices the fungi commana, and there aie many people in this city who are almost continually on the outlook for them and can raroly get what they want. Some w alk out lour or five miles and gather those that nature provides, saving that it Is about as cheap to do so as to paj' market prices. Here, then, Is one rarming indnstry that would give employment to a large number of people on remunerative terms, and the farmerwhoexperiments judiciously with novelties is the one who makes money. Dcside this, the mushroom farmer need not necessarily bo a hermit. He might rent an abandoned coal pit on Mt. Washington tor a song, and when be has his crop planted and has seen to it that the temperature of his farm Is about right, sas' between Wand 00J, be can come downtown and spend bis leisure in the Young Men's Mercantile Library, at tho rooms of the Y. M. C. A., at church, at the theater, In the lecture room, or barroom, etc, according as his tastes lead him. Tho nearer tho city, the cheaper can' the farm be started, and $100 capital would be abundant to start one in a Mt, 'Washing ton coal pit, as the fuel necessary to keep the proper temperature could begotten at hand in the pits and for nothing, there being enough slack left in these disused mines txi rurrv on this industry for half a century at least. In old times the operators loft tho greater part of the slack in the pits; as It did not pay to take it out, there being next to no market for it. The mushroom raiser is not necessarily compelled even to buy seed, as he can manufacture It himself, and tho process is so simple that any child can understand it. The spawn for a large mush room "farm" need not cost more than $5. It is more than probable that Mr. Robln son's failure was caused by some very slight inadvertence, as an experienced cultivator, who made a pile of money in tho business, states tnat alter consulting all the authori ties on the subject, ho labored two years be fore ho produced n single mushroom, and finally on a patient examination oY the au thorities he discovered in a single sentence the cause of all his failures. It rend: "Bo careful to delay tho covering with mould until 10 or 12 days after the bed has been spawned.'" In ull his attempts he bad put the two-inch covering of soil on tho spawn as soon as it was planted, thereby raising the tempera ture In confining the steam to such a degree :i to destroy the spawn. This man who had raised every Kina ot garden vegetable that could be raised in tho latitude of New York City, sfLtes that mushrooms paid far better than anything else, though his net profit on an acre of celery was 1735, receipts being $1,340 and expenditures of all kinds, includ ing cost of selling. $G05. There is very little systematic cultivation of mushrooms around Pittsburg. A few people arc making money at it. Kraft's Creditors Are Saf j. There is no foundation for tho rumor that the creditors of ex-Treasurer Kraft, of Sharpsburg, wouldbescrionsly embarrassed by his failure. Treasurer-elect G. H. Wan ncr was in tho city yesterday making ar rancemeuts preparatory to assuming the duties of the office. Ho stated that no further trouble was anticipated and that the auditors had not yet completed their exami nation of Kraft's accounts, but would prob ably be prepared to make a report to-day of the exact amount of the shortaeo, which, as before stated will bo about $1,000 and will be met b the bondsmen within 30 days.
