Trimc Heavy fieeves Arc Xo Longer Feature at East Liberty. SWIXE AEE LOWER AM) SHEEP FIEH Oitice or PiTTsnnio DisrATCH, IVedmssday, September 9. There were 130 carloads of cattle at East Xiberty yards Jiondny morning, and the number was increased to 140 loads before the day was over. Since Monday there have been additional reinforcements, and the total for the week has not been much below ir0 carloads, against SO carloads last week. About one-third of the offerings were from Chicago, Ohio, Pennsylvania, "West Virginia and Indiana, furnishing about 100 loads. There were no strictly prime beeves on sale. All this grade seems to float of late to Chicaso, where prices are better than here. Xothing that was offered at Liberty this week brought more than $5 Mpcrcwt. and very few reached this price. As prime heavv steer are worth over $ 00 per cu t in Cnicaco, it is clear that there were no prime on sale at lnt Liberty. Buyers were present in noodlv numbers but their opportunity from the Heavy run was made the most of, and markets opened slow at n decline of ISc to2Jc per en t. from prices of last week. Common grades declined still more as the week advanced, and on some low srades there wa a decline oflOe per cwt. from prices of a week ago. Fresh cow s wore m larger supply Mian usual, anu omy mo best -nere activo "with J37 50 per head as the top of market. Oil es ivcre in fair supplv, and last week's prices were maintained. Top of market on veals was C'jC per lb. Hogs Receipts were large, the total for the week being about 55 cat loads, against 31) Ioad last week. Mur kcts were slow nt a decline of 15 to 25c per cwt. Rest cornfed hogs so.Id at $5 55, and very few of those offered were good enough to bring this price, sheep Total receipts lor the week, 25 loads, against 20 loads last week. MaikctR were reported active at a 6hade better prices than were obtained last m eek. Tft ot market for sheep was 5c, and for lambs 0c per lb. A Leading Firm's Review. The following is review of the week's woi k by Holmes, Row len, Briggfc & Co: AVe report HO loads of cattle on salo Mon day and Tuesday. Forty of these were from Chicngo and the balance came from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia, and weie made up largely of common to medium butcher cattle and stockers. All Cereals Aro Away Down Only a Tem porary Fecllnjr of Strength In Corn, TVhlch, TTas Soon Dissipated Provis lonn. However, Hold Their Own. CHICAGO Wheat and corn broke badly to-aay, nnd closed with a loss of 3c nnd 3Jc, respectively, on the leading futures com pared with yesterday's close. Around the opening w beat sold at lc decline. The heavy receipts, the moderate export and the weaker cables were the causes of tho decline. Spot wheatat Liverpool was quoted Id lower at the opening. Tho price for December nt the close or yesterday's session Vs 9sJs asjc, and at the opening this morning there were sellers at lrom OSc to 37$c, but no gen eral demand above the lower of these quota tions, and before the session was an hour old it was down to S7Jc. The prices succeeding the quotation last given show ed somo symptoms of improving under a demand from j csterday's buvers of puts, but upon the receipt of Bradstrcct't visible supply statement, showing in addi tion to an increase of 1,196,000 bushels cast of the Rockies, that stocks on the Pacific coast, exclusive of Washington, bad increased 2,832,000 bushels, a further break occurred, the price for December getting down to OoJc Then came a dispatch from Xe w York that tho Antwerp market was practically in a state of panic, and somq longs here imme diately threw over enough of their holdings to cause a further break to 933Jc. Trading was slow and without much ani mation until after the price had worked bo low 9c. After that there was heavy trad ing on each successive break. The last half hour was ono of sacrificial offerings bv tho longs and hurried calling of margins by the bears, under which the qnantity of those offerings kept increasing and prevented any reaction from the lowest figures, and the market closed weak at 95Je. Corn was traded in only to a fair amonnt. It started weak and lower, but after declin ing another fraction, grew temporarily strong and recovered the loss. Then there was decided weakness and a heavy break. The subsequent reaction was attributed to purchases 115- the clique which is supposed to be manipulating September and October. In the last hour the offerings became free and the, bears added their offerings and the price went off with a rush. October opened at 5St3Sc, sold as low as 57e, and from that up to 9c before tho big break of the day occurred. It declined in stages to 55c and closed easy at that figure. Oats dull and declined c. Provisions firm in contrast with the sur rounding markets. The fluctuations were confined to a narrow range and the closing prices were practically the same as on yes terday. Although the room traders succeeded in placing but few orders yesterday, they dis played more anxiety to do business than at any previous time this month. They ap peared to realize to some extent that better times for speculators are on the way. Pleasant Valley was a strong feature. It was in demand in large and small lots, with very little offered. Its earnings are said to be increasing, which is reason enough for the bulge. All of the listed tractions received more attention than usual, while the i n Jlstod ones maintained their old attitude if suplneness. THE STOCK MARKET IS ACTIVE, BUT ONLY IN SPOTS. Generally Favorable News Assises the Hulls The Vanderbllts Still Lead the Procession The Highest Prices Beached nt Noon Railroad Bonds Also Active, New Youk, Sept. 9. The stock market was on the whole very active, but the animation was In spots, the general list being held firm with narrow limits. Tho great feature is the Vanderbilts, and for the moment they furnished the only support to the move ment. The news of tho day was generally favor able. There was considerable selling for arbitrage account, but the lorelgn opera tions are not of special importance. The bears endeavored to press their advantage of yesterday afternoon, and a weak opening was made. The demand was urgent, how ever, and tho temper of the speculation was soon changed for the better, when at noon the highest prices were attained. The Van derbilts led the advance, but later Lake Shore, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and St.. Louis and the Chesapeake and Ohios be came prominent. At different times New England, Reading and Erie were specially strong with marked activity, but while St. Paul, Atchison, Union Pacific and the otlior leading shares were more largely traded in than thoso mentioned, their fluctuations were confined to narrower limttB. In the last hour realizations started a re action, which gained force as the day came to an end, and the market finally closed ac tive, generally at insignificant changes for the day. The gains in most of the strong stocks "were completely neutralized, but Lake Shore and New England are 1 per cent higher, and Reading 1 per cent. The only really weak spot was Cordage, whloh dropped away 1 per cent and closest with- a loss of 3.
