THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. SUNDAY, . AUGUST 16. 189L 11 AS OHM PAEADISE. Half a Million Bushels Every Year From Lake County, Ohio. GLORY OP A SMALL TOTVXSHIP. Eow tte Tsr-Compellinj Esculent Grown for the Market Is A GREAT IXDUSTKT FOE SMALL LOTS tCORBESPOJ,DJ.CE OF THE DISPATCH.! Psrky, O., Aug. 15. The long lina of yellow Lake Shore coaches whirling along the low Southern chore of the blue Erie carries the traveler through one of the finest tanning regions in the couutry. One of the most beautiful parts of this region is the historic "Western Reserve of Ohio, so famous in wartime as the homo of Ben "Wade and Joshua Giddings, and later of the lamented Garfield. The Reserve has an even dozen of conn ties, and if any one oftheseisto be given Srsi place, it must be "Little Lake," the rcna lc and one of the richest counties in the State, famed the country over as the home of Garfield and the onion. Lest year this little county shipped away of onions nearly 200,000 bushels, and Eome Tears, as in '&S, has rounded out a full 600, KMX Of these tremendous amounts neariy lalf is raised in Terry, the smallest town ship of this smallest county, where, instead of the stereotyped "Howdy do." the happy granger meets you with "How's your onions?" THE MTSTERY OF 3IUCK. In Terry, no matter where you turn, onions is ting, and council, too. Field after field, rcre alter acre of them meet the onion-s:ck visitor on every hand. Onions evervwhere, and few soils are so poor as to be slighted. Clay, gravel, sand, loam all do their share, but the soil of all soils for the onion is the rich black inuck, made by vegetable decay and growing onions of so monstrous a tire as to be beyond all belief. A curious thing about muck is that it will bam rcadil v w l.cn dry, and has been known to bum to the depth 61 n foot or more, mak ing it completely worthless. In the latter part of March the onions are sown in drills or rows, 12 to 15 inches r part, and in a few weeks are large enough for the fir-t w ceding The rows are gone over vrith a "I'lauct Jr.." as the cujtivator Is called, ai.d the earth made loose and tai 'low. Then the bo s fairly swarm to the f:c!d and the "pitches" are dotted with cha-.ers of oli ages, toasting their bare shins In the b'o l.ng tun, and weeding for dear life. The kvs generally use, to help their tired fintri-r, "weeders" made of thin strips f crwlbent in trianrular shape, and fatt ened to wooden handles. "With these the nrk is lessened by half and the boys liter oih "kuuckle in" in their haste to get to tie end of the field. A GREAT IXDUSTKT FOB BOVS. TUe weeding must be done over three or for times at least, and if the season be a raiuy .ne the weedings must be doubled, iu.il all the i-ijs out of dresses, kept on Ui- qui Tive fighting the miserable "pusiev, " tfr ; la.gue of all onion fields. Boys ot 10 to 1" are paid from 1 to f 1 50 a'day for weeding and in the busiest times the town iuhm he c- ured to find boys enough. In v.kU legulated fields the weeds are all gath ered and lusied nway and great care is taken lest any go to seed. few crops lia e more foes than the onion. Oitcn it is attacked by a kind of louse and almost eaten up. The cutworms and wire woniii le exorbitant toll, too. Besides, a fiiru il luight often tpreads over the fields, ju:d the thrifty green tops are soon 5 elio w and shriveled. Through all of these trials the fanner must keep a stout heart, and if the crop has no serious setback it will be ripe and ready for "pulling" by the 1st of September. The pulling is generally done by hand and the onions lelt on the gi.tni-iull tlifroughly dried. Then "top liiog," or cutting away the dry topeis in order, and the urehms"ha e their hands full cgain. "Snip, snip," go the shears, and one at a time the onions go into the crates, while the lad reckons his probable earnings at the rate of 3 to 5 cents a bushel. THE MARKET IS VARIABLE. After this the onions are barreled and are ready for the .narket, "and if one will alight ft the little ferry station any time in the lall he will hnd the quiet little village bristling with business and the coopers working with micht and main to keep the shippers sjpplied with barrels. The onion crop aloi.e- (nought into the county last vear over 13u,lH.iO, and of thatvamount at leat f f0,0ou went to this little township. Xothing i more variable, however, than the market puce of these fragrant treasures. Iha-.e icuown of their bringing as high as 2 a bushel last winter they nearly reached that fi.rurt while three years ago they vonld bring but seven cents, less than the con of handling, and many thou Eaiid bushels of choice onions were cj'Ttfd to the fields and dumped. Thee, of course, were extreme years, an average price being probably from 50 cents to 5 cents, and the grower who receives sore than 1 is counted lucky. There is great danger in holding over the crop for iiitrber prices, as sometimes quite unex pcctedlv the bottom suddenly drops out of the market and prices go to smash. Sriecu lation in onions is a source of profit to uany, but on account of the sudden fiuctua- ocs in prices the successful speculator should have the shrewdness of "Wall street, tind must keep his 'Heather eye on all the leading markets, unless he wants to be "tcooped." The Capital Qntet TJio Trcildent Trying to Torrn a New Cabinet TIio Chamber ot Deputies EejecU the Government's Tole (rraph Measure Trouble feared. Port atj Prince, Haiti, Aug. 15. The Cabinet of President Hippolyte has re signed. A turbulent session of the Cham ber of Deputies yesterday closed with a vote of censure against the members. The debate, in the Chamber was a stormy one. Jlembers of that body openly charged the Cabinet 2.1inisters with corrup tion and incapacity. The Minis ters were vigorously defended and their opponents as vigorously denounced, but the formal ote of censure for incapac itv and corruption was carried amid storms of cheers. No ministry could stand against such a vote. The President is now busy with the formation of a new Cabinet, The resignation of the Cabinet yesterday was owing to the failure of the Chambers to grant a concession for the construction of a telegraph line. JLlie uaomet nas made this a Government question, and as the Cham bers rejected the proposition by a decisive majority, they at once placed their resisna tions in the hands of tiie President. Hip polyte has not yet decided whom he will select for the vacant places, but' is canvass ing the situation carefully. He doesn't think the resignations will liave much po litical effect. The downfall of the cabinet has been the principal topic of conversation in political circles, and much curiosity is manifested with reference to the Presidents selection of a new Ministry. But tho city remains en tirely tranquil, so far as one can see. It the disaffected element has any notion of taking advantage of tho present crisis to improve its position, it is working so secretly that not ning appears on the surface. Many persons hae prophesied great trouble in the near future. Jlr. Deetjen, jresioent oi tne unamDer ot deputies, said: "The situatson is a difficult one. I do not know how we Bhall meet it. Ho one can teU you that, bat I fear that thare is trouble ahead that will be difficult to over come." INDIAN XEEEITOEY PK0HT3m0ir. Jadce Bryant's Annulling Decision Does Not End the Mattor. Huskogee, I. T., Aug. 15. Indian Agent Bcnnet went to Ardmore, I. T., to confiscate and destroy a carload of beer re ceiedatthat place since Judge Bryant's decision that that beverage was not pro hibited in the Territory. Judge Shackle ford returned from Indiana last night, and stated to-day that he has herotofore held and now holds that the intent of the law was to prohibit the sale of intoxicants in the Territory, and that the sale of beer was not, in his opinion, excepted. As this court has concurrent jurisdiction with the Pans and Port Smit'i courts, the beer saloons recently set up will have & rough road to travel, notwithstanding Judge Br ant's decision. THAT ITS CLAIMS TO SUPERIORITY AS A MANUFACTURING POINT ARE BASED ON FACT AND NOT ON FANCY. MANY MORE FACTORIES, None of them of an insignificant or mythical character, will follow the Great Safe Works to Blaine as soon as they can be accommodated with coveted sites, on terms not requiring lot buyers to pay for them. On the Monongahela, with uninterrupted river navigation, and on the lines of the two greatest railroad systems, sur rounded by improvements and bounded by an old town and all of its conveniences, observes with serenity the efforts of less favored but "many-factoried" aspiring new EMI, "cities" to convince the public that water flows up hill, and that the tide of manufacture, commerce'and population is not toward the river that LEADS TO THE GULF-SOON TO THE LAKES!
