- THE ' PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, FRIDAY. AUGUST 14. 1891 3 ABHOR PLATES SEXT. Carnegie. Phipps & Co. "Will Have Their Plant Ready in a Month to BEGIN OXTHE G0YERX3IEKT ORDER. They Are Xow Importing Machinery and Supplies From Abroad. MISCELLANEOUS IXDCSTKIAL ITEMS It is now thought that Carnegie, Phipps & Co. will bet;in to manufacture Govern ment armor plate ct HcmesteaJ within the next month. For the pr.st six weeks or two month, the machinery nceesarj- to put the new armor plate mill in readiness for operation has been arriving by the car load and the prospects are now that the mill will be completed within a very short time. The greater portion of this machinery has been imported. It was necessary to do this in order to fill the Government's contract for armor plaics. There has been some un favorable criticism toward 3Ir. Carnegie, whoe pronounced tariff ideas are well loiown, for importing machinery that could be made in this country, as it is known the duty mum have amounted to from 53,000 to $10,000. The tact", in the case may remove all cause for criticism. It w ill be remembered that about a year ago Secretary Tracy awarded Carnegie, l'liipps & Co. a contract for 0,000 tons of fin ished armor plates. Ono of the provisions ot the contract was that the delivery of the work was to beein within a specified time. That time i nearly up. The firm discovered that it would be necessary to make some improvements on the plate mill. Tho ma chinery and cranes needed were of a specific make, and it was discovered that, to post pone the improvements until pnttcrns.for the neces-irvmuchinerv could ucrnado. tho first of the G,00O ton order could not be de livered on time. Everythinpr that was needed could be purchased abroad, and with the dutv fiRured in the cot, it is paid tho machinery ha been delivered about as cheap ns ft could have been nnde here, and the firm w ill have the additional ndvantnse of being able to beirin to make and deliver tho armor plates at the time specified in the contract. All the machinery i here and is being put In place. Fie carloads arrived within the last ten davs. In this lot was included threo larije cranes and other implements and tools for handling the material. The importation of this material led to an inqnlrv into the extent to which this and other firms import. At one time the Cnr ncgies were north about $1(0,000 to this port, but a few years ajro for some reason Mr. Carnegie tran-feried his interests to Sew York and cleared at that point. Of late rears, however, he is gradually returning, and since the first of the present year ho has paid in duties between $0,000 and $.V).OO0. Tho Olivers, the Crescent Steel Company and Jones & Laughlins are nlno heavy im porters. One or two firms import a largo amount of old steel rails. VESUVIUS STRIKERS MEET. They Will Vote To-Morrow on the Continu ance of the Strike. A mcctiiiR of the Sharpsburg strikers was called yesterday for the purpose of taking a vote on the question of continuing the Btrike. So many pnddlcrs are absent work ing at other points that the action vas post poned until to-morrow, when it is expected that a full meeting of all the employes of the firm will be held. So far it looks as if the men were deter mined to Mand out, while it looks equally certain that JIi Moorlsead intends to pursue the course he has outlined at anv coat. Only One Assessment Paid. Secretary JIcGntre, of the Carpenters' Brotherhood, has issued another statement denying the assertion that tho Pittsburg carpenters have paid an assessment for years to the Federation for the eight-hour movement. He says that only ono assess ment was ever paid for that purpose and that was paid from the general office. Rrirklayers Are Confident. President Campbell, of the Philadelphia Bricklayers' Union, who is in the city, made n tour of the cities yesterday in company with Agent O'Brien, of this city, lie said last night that he was confident he could get nil his men to leave for home. Many have already promised to go. Industrial otes. Tnx Oliver A Roberts wire mill has had six weeks for repairs this season. The Linden Steel Company, of this city, after mnkmg some extensivo repairs is again running its works in full. Anorr COO members of the Gambrinus So ciety, composed of brewers and emploves, picnicked at Hock Point yesterday. The Pittsburg ISndge Company has been been awaided the contract for a steel bridge over the Sandy river at Farmington, Jle- lor SH,rao. The employes along tho line of the Avcst Pcnn Railroad, between Allegheny and But ler were made happy to-day. The pay car "was the cause. The skelp mill of the Etna Works at Xew Castle, Pa., is being torn down, and tho two liigh train of rolls is being replaced by a tliree-hich train The Keystone Kolllng Mill Company, of this eitv, has started another branch to its works on second avenue. It has started the manufacture of cotton ties. Thf Philadelphia Gas Company has noti fied the Duqnesne Tube Works Company that after 1st of next month they will fur nish tlicm with no more gas. It is said the United StatesGla68 Company may go into the manufacture of lamp chim neys in addition to their other lines of ware, but have not fully decided upon tho matter yei. The friends of Superintendent Slorris llatnsey, or the Frick Coke Works at Mt. Pleasant, will be sorry to hear of the death nis oauguter eine. ne died rrom diph theria. Phillips, Ximick Jt Co.'s works on the Soiithsidc have been endeavoring to run double time, with indifferent success, partly on account of the heat and partly on ac count of bad coal. Tjut portion of tho National Tube Works Company's plant which was known as the Boston Iron i.nd Steel Company was put in lxivtinl operation this week. Tho mill will Iio on in lull next week, with 30 puddling furnaces. The Duquesne Tube Works Company, which recently erected large additions to its plant at Uuiuctnc, Pittsburg district, has deeidwlto increase tho capital stock from $100,000 to $131,001, and will shortly add a roll ing mill to its capacity. The Model Flint Glass Works ot Findlay has its fires going, and resumed in full on Wednesday. This is tho first of the glass works in that place to start the new fire. The ntlwr factories will start Monday, when 1.209 persons w ho have been idle wince labt May will go work. The omplojcs of the Co-Operative Glass Works, at Beaver Falls, Pa., have notified the stockholders of the concern that they must join the union. The stockholders, who ait! all practical glass men, work in the con cern, and sUv they will not join the union, and the probabilities are that an early re sumption w ill not be made at these works. All arrangements for conducting the campmeeting at Tarentum are going on smoothly since the action of the committee in securing the services of Rev. W. II. Glad den, of Ohio, to conduct the services has been indorsed by the lot holders. These latter hold the balance of power, and all owners of public conveyances will bo charged a license fco of $5, or 25 cents a trip. Tho drivers are making strenuous objec tions, but there seems nothing clso to do but pay it. Minormatters are being arranged for to provide for the maintaining of good order, collections, plicing of private car riages, etc., ull of winch will be under the supervision of It. S. P. McCall, the former President ot the association. An old-time campmeeting is expected dur ing the season, w hich will last over two Sun days, and unless the weather prevents, an enormous attendance is expected. Though a great deal of time has been spent in pre liminaries, the piogramme for the season will not vary greatly from the usual one To morrow w ill be old-timers day, and many of the original members and projectors ol the camp grounds have signified their intention of being presen t. The ladies, especially, nro making preparations to entertain the visi tors handsomely on that dav. The programme yesterday was cut rather short, in order that more complcto arrange ments mignt bo made for to-morrow and next week. HARVEST EXCURSIONS. Tho Objections of the Eastern Bonds Have at Last Been Overcome. It has at last been decided to have the usnal harvest excursions. At a meeting held yes terday, August 24 was the date fixed for the first one. For severnl years these excursions have given hundreds of people an opportun ity to visit tho West at a reduced expense, but this year somo of tho Eastern railways have made a strong fight .against them. They claim that the harvest excursions have a tendency to demoralize local business and the scalpers are also given a chance to get some extra business. For theso reasons it has looked for somo timo as though there would be no harvest excursions tuis jenr, but the roads gut together yesterday ana it was decided to couform to the custom. Though the an nouncement comes late, thero is but little doubt that tho excursions will bo heavily patronized. TWO SUITS FOE DAMAGES. People Who Go to Court to Get Indemnity for Themselves. Messrs. They Will Dance and Sing Before tho Pittsburg Public, to Pour MONEY INTO CHARITY'S COFFERS. Coming Benefit for the Homeopathic Hos pital Association. 0XE TilOUSAXD CHILDREN TO APPEAR One thousand beautiful children, the pets of the homes of Pittsburg and Allegheny, representing kings, queens and ladies of fairyland will be an attraction presented shortly at Exposition Park for the benefit of the Ladies' Hospital Association of the Homeopathic Hospital. Arrangements have been made for the production of "The Fairies' Carnival" on the evenings of September 9, 10 and 11, and the preliminary rehearsal of the children will be had next week. This is one of the roost beautiful spectacular productions of the day, nnd the addition of attractive juve nile home talent gives a special interest to the pretty opercttn. It will require a stage 100x300 feet to accommodate the little actors and actresses, and the stage work will be on the most elaborate scale. The production will be under the direct supervision of J. Edgar Owens, the sole proprietor of the piece, and he will have as his assistants some of the best managerial talent which ever handled spectacularwork. J. Leon Vincent, who has for many years been identified with spectacular produc tions of the highest grade, will immedi ately take charge of the children, and give them a thorough training. Mr. Vincent is now managing the production of "Pom peii" at Exposition Park. THE nOSMTAL SEEDS MONEY. "The Fairies' Carnival will be produced under the auspices of the Ladies' Associa tion of the Homeopathic Hospital, for the benefit of the hospital fund. The coffers of that most worthy Inctitutlon have been badly depleted and directors and friends havo been compelled to go down deep into their pookets to keep its head above water. Tho last Legislature failed to see the good work done and as a consequence tho ap propriation was cut, throwing the assembly entirely on its own resources. This is the incentive lor the production of "The Fairies' Carnival," and the ladies hopo it will bo as gi eat a success as it is worthy. A mooting was held nnd a committee ap pointed to take chargo of the work. Mrs. William Thaw is President, anil Mrs. George L. ilcCoy, Secretary. The other members of the cominittcu arc Mrs. J. J. Vandegrift, Mrs. Norman M. Smith, Miss McClelland, Miss Pitcairn, Mrs. W. J. Moreland and Miss Woods. With such a committee the pnblio .has the assurance that nothing will bo left undone to make the production an unquali fied success. In fact, it has never been pro duced on a mote elaborate scale than will bo shown in this city. Itehearsals will begin next Monday and ill bo continued until the children are perfected in their parts. GOOD MUSIC OXE OF TIIE FEATURES. The lines in the operetta are very inter esting and the music is especially sweet, tho hundreds of childish voices blending into one grand chorus, which must be heard to know its full worth. The musical pro gramme will be under the direction of II. P. Ecker, who was recently appointed organist for Allegheny City. Ills reputation is too well known to necessitate the statement that his share in tho progiamme will bo successful. He will begin to-day to arrange the chornsea and will havo everything ready to tako chargo of tho youngsters at their first meeting in Grand Central Kink Monday next. Manager Owens is very much pleased at tho prospects for the production, and w ith so worthy an object there is no doubt that his hopes will bo lealized. Unless tho weather interferes this will be one of tho host amateur talent ventures ever shown in the city. Tho children to take part are of about the right nge to rapidly loarn the mnrches, dances and music with which "The Pairics' Carnival" is repleto. They will represent the beautiful fairies, tho busy bees, the pretty butterflies, etc. One of the prettiest features of tho production will bo tho costumes, which will be odd, artistic nnd neat.
