GAPTDEED IN CASADA. H. H. Kinney, "Who Secured a Uotej From J. A. Wood & Son, WILL FIGHT TO STAY WHERE HE IS Acting Under Advice From His Attorney, Has Little to Say. CLAIMS HE HAS DONE XOIHIXG TVROXG IL IT. Kinney, the insurance agent who secured a promissory note for 6,946 23 from Captain John A." "Wood, of the firm of John A. "Wood & Son, was captured in To ronto, Canada, Thursday. For a short time Kinney was an agent for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in this city, lie was a clever talker, and a cenial and entertaining fellow, who bore ell the external characteristics of an honest man and a gentleman. Early in July he called upon Samuel L. 'Wood, the junior member if the firm, representing himself not only as the accredited agent of the Equitable Company, but also as ihe representative of a strong syn dicate of Eastern capitalists. He told a very plausible story, and finally in duced the firm to issue their note to him for the sum mentioned in exchange for an insurance policy on the life of Captain "Wood for an extravagant amount in pro portion to the premium. WORKED A PLAUSIBLE SCHEME. The policy was to be paid up for a year, and Kinney was also to secure a loan for the Wood-firm at a low rate of interest. The note he secured was to cover the in surance premium and KinucT's commission for s-ecuring the loan from his boeus si-ndi-cate. After securing the note Kinney ab sconded, and the policy and the mythical syndicate were never heard from. The police of this city sent out discrip tionsof the man, and he has been tracked from Pittsburg to Youngstown, O., and thenee to Toronto by way of Buffalo. He registered at a good" hotel in Toronto under the name of George A. Clark, of New York. KIXXEY REFUSES TO TALK. last evenincTriEDlsrATCli received the following special from its representative in Toronto: "Hubert H. Kinney, since his arrest on Thursday, acting on the advice of his law yer. E. G. Smith, has been very reticent concerning the charges against him. In an inteniew with your representative all he would "-ay was that he was innocent of any crime for which he could be extradited, and that the transaction concerning bills was perfectly legitimate. He registered at the Commercial Hotel under the name of Ireorge Clark, and explains this asuinp 1i a of a false name by saying it v as simply to prevent prying " friends ir-m bdrhering him. The lawyer, who is dt-fending, refuses to speak on the case. Kinney only had about f 26 in his possession when arrested, but there appears to be ample means at his disposal for defense, ami a determined fight will be made against extradition. A gentleman called at the prison to-day and informed the guards that every comfort would be provided for the prisoner during his incarceration. He is in oxeellent spirits, and insisted on a bath after his return from the police court, where he had mixed with drunks and lagrants." riCTIOX-Tnles Verne's story, "TJie Call fomians," Is now running In the Sunday ls.sue of THE DISi'ATCU. The climax Is reached to-morrow. Civil "Service Examinations. An order from the Civil Service Commis sion received yesterday fixes the date of the Civil Service examinations in this city for August 13 and 14 at the United States court room, beginning at 9a. m.
