NEED OP LEADERS TO PUSH THINGS The Famous Stewart Farm Reported to Have Been Absorbed at Last. FINANCIAL AND SPECULAHYE TIPS Hints of a big deal in acroago were thrown out early In tho week and referred to in this column, but spocific facts could not be ob tained until yesterday, when It was learned on good authority that tho transaction in volucd tho Stewart fnrm of 200 acres, nd Joining Kensington on the north, and that the Bnrrell Improvement Company was the purchaser. The price could not bo ascer tained, as members of the company wero not in a position to talk, but it is safo to place it in the neighborhood of $100,000. This is the property that was offered to the city for a poor farm at $700 an acre and raised such a breeze in Councilmanic and political circles a few months ngo. Almost Wiped Out. Stcrrett township has been clipped so much that very little -ot it remains. The first break occurred when Wilkins township was formed. The organization of the bor oughs of Wilkinsburg, Edgewood and Brush ton made further inroads. All that remains of the township is a narrow strip adjoining Brushton ana tho Crab Hollow district above Wllkinsbnrg. Tho former will prob ably be absorbed by Brnshton. but the fato of the latter is not so clear. Inasmuch as H ilklnsburg does not want it for political reasons, it will no doubt be annexed to Brnddock township. This accomplished, Sterrett township will disappear. The Yalue of a Leader. Spenking of tho backward condition of Grant street yesterday, a real estate broker remarked: "If you will furnish a leader, some one to erect a first-class building in tho vicinity of the. Court House, I will guar antee that Grant street will soon become one of the most progressive in tho city." He added: "A leader is indispensable in every line of development. About a dozen years ago I was agent for considerable vacant ground on Ellsworth avonuo. I offered it at very low prfcos, but failed to find buyers. Finally I almost donated an acre to a well known business man oil the sole condition that ho would put a house on it costing not less than $20,000. Ho did so, and iu addition put up nice fences and Improved his grounds. When all was finished ho had one of the handsomest places in tho East End. This called attention to the loealltv and gave it sucli an impulse thnt I soon sol'd out," Incidents of this kind are numerous. A few years ago Mr. A. H. Rownnd pur chased five acres In what was then an ob scure part of Edge wood, and built a $20,000 house. Ho had no near neighbors then but has plenty now. This plan will work os well to-day as it did ten years ago. All that is necessary to stir up things in a dead district, other conditions being favorable, is to make a start break the ice find some one to pio neer tho way and there will soon be no lack of followers." To Doom Petroleum. Tho maintenance of an oil department in the New York Produco Exchange is being advocated by some of tho members with considerable earnestness. Some of them say there is no good reason why the specula tion in petroleum should not assume consid erable importnnco next lall. There is a probability thnt tho rules and regulations will be revised for the purpose of inducing the public to take more Interest in the mar ket. One of the changes which has been suggested is a reduction of the commission rates. Business News and Gossip. The big deal on Perrysvlllo avenue, re ported yesterday, will accelerato the im provement of that progressive thorough fare. Lot selling at Kensington is ns active as at any timo since the opening sale. Building nnd other improvements aro making good progress, Tho largest shifting sheds on the Pennsyl vania Railroad are at Wall. This is n new town, but It has already passed tho doubtful state. Its close proximity to Pittsburg, and the number nnd variety of its industries, make it desirable forborne seekers. The Pittsburg nnd Western Hailwav Com pany has placed a mortgnge for $40,000 with the Safe Deposit and Trust Compa ly, as trustee. Tho money is to be used for the betterment of the road. Sixty buildings, residence and business, are in course of election nt Kensington, cost ing from $500 to $3,500. These do not include the factories. There are indications that Standard Oil interests are willing to sell Lead down if it could be done without the loss of too much stock. There is talk against the reorganiza tion plan by brokers who havo heretofore been bullish. It is said the coming statement of the Philadelphia Comcany will show thnt heavy inroads have been made upon tho debt. This w ill be good news but not a sur prise. The Pittsburg Oil nnd Gas Supply Com pany has leased 1.170 acres ot land near New Castle, and arrangements will be made for sinking w ells for oil and gas immediately. Reports of mllrotd earnings continue to figure on the bull sido. New York closed heavy and lower. London was dull nnd weak. The Central Trust Comrjanv of Now York. and the Franklin Trust Company of Brook lyn, give notice that they will receive sub scriptions for $530,000 of the 8 per cent cumu lative preferred stock of the Demorest Pub lishing nnd Sewing Machine Company. Tho preferred stock is the only one offered for public subscription, the whole of tho com mon stock being retained by tho present management and associates of tho com pany. The subscription books are now open nnd w ill close on August 10 or earlier. The business is earning over $100,00j, snfll cient to pay 8 tier cent on both nreferred and common stock and leave a surplus. The Building Record. NO BUSINESS TO BRAG ABOUT, BUT VALUES GENERALLY STIFFEK. More Emphasis Given to the Bullish Sen timent Bidders Making Ad vnnces "Wcstinghouse Meetings Postponed Reorganization Practically Completed. Bearish sentiments, so long the dominant feature on 'Change, seem to be giving way to a more hopeful and buoyant temper. Big crops and steady improvement in the finan cial situation furnish sufficient reasons for the change. Trading was slow yesterday, footing up only 100 shares, nnd narrow as well, only two stocks, Philadelphia Gas and Duqncsno Traction, being handled, but values were stronger for almost everything upon which quotations weio made. Philadelphia Gas sold up to Ui at the last call against 11 nt the first, and closed steady at the outsido figure with more wanted than offered. Luster was a fraction off in the bidding, but holders refused to make concessions. Switch and Signal, Airbrake, Underground Cable and Plpcnge wero more aggressive. Scarcely anything was said about Electric. The adjournment of the annual and special meetings for four weeks wns something of a disappointment. This means more delay in listing the new stock. Mr. Westinghouse snid everything was progressing nicely and that the reorganization would be completed within the prescribed 60 days. He added that new stock certificates were being en graved and printed. The market is so sensitive that as soon ns It becomes known that orders (or anything are out up go prices aim ousiness is iiiockcu. This is illustrated hy the course of Philadel- Fhia Gas during tho last two or three days, t shows that sellers aro expocting an up turn and arc holding out tor It. The following from a Now York sourco fits the local situation exactly: "During tho long-continued liquidation in the stock mar ket, a liquidation which has gone on without disturbance, the market has been gaining strength dav by day. The stock has been passing from the hands of brokers into tho hands of investors, and where the sales havo been forced it has gone from those -t-ho had no money' into the hands of men with money." Outside speculation has been practically at a standstill, and it is rcusonable to sup pose fiom theso facts that very little stock will be offered for some time to come, except at high prices such as would remunerate cautious investors who pay for what they got and have no reason for selling except a desire to realize the highest sum possible. A DULL BEAR DAY. THE STOCK MARKET IS PROFESSIONAL AND NARROW. Four Issues Furnish Nearly All the Busi ness Done, and Tlioy Are All Down Sev eral Material Losses Railroad Bonds Unusually Dull and Lower. New York, July 29. The stock market to day had more of a professional look and was narrower than during the last few days, dis playing a weak tone. The bears wero inac tive except in Burlington, Northern Pacific, Louisville and St. Paul, while a few special ties, including Tennessee coal, scored ma terial dcclineson small transactions. Tho bears for the present are certainly on top, but they can't press the advantage too. far. In to-day's .market four stocks furnished the greater portion of the business done. The traders raided the leading stocks, making a weak opening, but the extent of tho declines was insignificant. While tho final changes in most ot tho list aro confined to small fractions, the tew active shores suffered largo losses for the day. The ear lier efforts were nlmeil ut Burlington and northern racino preicncu, out Louisville, Lacknw anna nnd finally St.P.ml and Chicago Gas felt tho pressure to sell. There wero frequent small rallies, but no material prog ress was made townrd higher figures, and the market closed dull but weak at or near the lowest prices of the day. The important losses include Tennessee Coal, 2; Chicago Gas, ii; Northern Pacific preierred, 1J; Colorado Coal nnd Wheeling and Lake Erie, each 4: Louisville and Nashville, , and oc. x-aui 1 per cent.
