Thx only district whore there is expected to bo any hesitancy over the election of a principal is in the Springfield, Twelfth ward. At present there is a deadlock over tho elec tion of the treasurer of the board, and tho knowing ones say this will likely go against the election of the principal. There is talk of the citizens getting up a petition and sending it to tho board, protesting against the election of the present principal. Tits organization of the school board and the election of teachers are occurring nightly. Prof. Laver, of the Lawrence School, over whose election it was rumored there would be trouble, was elected last week, receiving 6 votes out of 6. Fob the coming week the Fifth Avenue Museum presents what should prove a very interesting attraction. Six young ladies are to engage in a wood sawing contest. They will have the old fashioned saws, regular cord wood, and the one saw ing the most will receive a prize of $50, the second prize being $23. Each one will have the wood stacked up by her side every dav. The taik will be large, and judges will bo selected to detcrmin: the winners. It will be easy for the spectator to determine at a glanc: any time which one is ahead. Othcrfcatnrcsln tho curio hall will be Waggoner and Thorpe's famous city in miniature, a most exceedingly interesting and and novel mechanical Invention. In the theater the favorite dramatic company that has been at this house forthepasttwo weeks will present a dramatization of Washing ton Irving's famous story, "Eip Van Winkle?' Mr. Edwin Young will impersonate Bxp Tan Winkle and Miss Annetta sawyer will appear &sMeenie. The whole will be given with a strong cast and new scenery. Four per formance will bo given daily. The first at 2 5"r. M., tho second at 4.30 p. k., and two in the e ening. A SKiiiES of ovening excursions qn the Ohio and Monongahela rivers, under conditions that have never prevailed before, is the at tractive programme suggested for the sum mer months by Mr. George 0. Jenks. The first of tneao excursions will take place on Tuesday, June 9, on board the steamer May flower, which will leave the Wood street wharf at 7.30 t. h. Gern erfs Orchestra wiU give a concert on board and furnish muslo for dancing. The novel conditions of this excursion are that the invitations will be issued onlv to a seiectjiumDer 01 people, tnat -the greatest ctrewillbe taken to exclude undesirable elements, and that Manager Jenks has made it his business to insure the safety and com fort of his guests The Idea is decidedly a good one to bring the picturesque river scenery about Pittsburg within the reach of respectable citizens, and to provide a refreshing amusement for hot summer nights. Hitherto Water excursions here have been chiefly beer excursions of a moro or less turbulent character. Nobody will be admitted without an invitation, which may be obtained of Manager Jenks, at his office in Hamilton's store. The first eTcurslon on Tuesday next will be to Davis Island Dam, and if time remains, a short distance nn tha J .Monongahela. Dramatic critics and theater-goers all unite in saying that "Ton Nights in a Bar Room" is the best temperanoe drama ever produced. It will be presented at Hams, Britton A Dean's popular theater this week by tho Standard Dramatio Company. In the organization will be found many Pittsburg favorities "who have appeared here from time to time with othercombinations. They produced the same play in Cincinnati last week and were wnrmly praised by tho press of that city. W. J. Mageo will give eaoh per formance his personal supervision, which Is a guarantee that the show will please tho patrons of the house and those who appreci ate an artistic performance. Tax part of "Tho Little Eecrult," as played by Master Richard Long in the show of that name at tho Bijou last week, was most excellently rendered for a lad ot 14 years. Young Master Long is a son of Lonny" Long, the veteran comedian in G. A. IL plays and entertainments, and bids fair to equal if not outdo his father, and the father is reckoned ono of the best outside of the professional ranks. TheBIJou Theater closed last night. The season has been the most profitable that Gullck & Co. have yet known. Mr. Gnlick will leave for the East next week, and Busi ness Manager Dawson is by this time hurry ing towards his beloved New York. The Bijou will reopen early in August. Mas. Harris, one the proprietors of Harris Theater, and a remarkably able manager, was in the city yesterday looking after her Interests. Hams' Theater will be r.lrmprt fnr I slight repairs, some time in August. Anjietta 8AWTXR,who has been playing leading roles at Harry Davis Theater, is a clever actress. She will probably rejoin "The Great Metropolis" Company, with -whioh she-appeared hero last season. See Display Advertisement UTJcUing about Kensington. Page 10. Wheeling, TV. Va. ' The B. & O. B.
