essa 8 AN AMAZING CHANGE. Henry "Welch, an Irishman, Bapidly Tnrnin? Into a Black Man. WHAT MONTHS HAS DOXE. He First Became a light Tellow and Is Growing Darker. BILE IS THE EXPLANATION GITEX OF IT 2ew York, May 16. There have been negroes whose skius turned white in spots for revenue and exhibition chiefly. There have been negroes uhose skins ivere so slightly tinted anyway that they readily passed for white men. " There have even been negroes entirely white, if we may trust veracious travelers. But who ever heard of a white man with not a drop of African blood in his veins who turned negro? And an Irish white man at that? Yet this singular phenomenon is now be ing observed in a well authenticated case at the Presbyterian Hospital. The history of this extraordinary patient, verified in a great part by inquiry among his friends, as set down on the hospital records and gathered elsewhere runs thus: His name is Henry Welch. He is 5Q vears old, and the son of Thomas and 3Iary Welch, of County Down, in Ireland, where he was born. He has been in America 35 years, most of the time employed as a waiter. He came to Kew York ten years ago, and has been employed in many res taurants, uptown and down. TJp to six months ago no one had questioned that TVelch was a -white man any more than that a horse has four legs. Some time last No vember he began to be troubled with an in termittent pain in the region of his stom ach, at times very severe. He had a lan guid feeling and'a bilious look, and along in December his face began to take a slight tinge of yellow, as if he had an attack of jaundice. lie Still Grows Darker. The pain continued and so did the vellow tinge, and the color steadily got darker. By Christmas he va. about the shade of a typical Italian. By the end of January he was as yellow as a Chinaman. A month later he ould be taken for a quadroon. Two veeks ago he was like a mulatto and still growing darker. Then "Welch, being convinced that Providence for some mys terious reason had elected to make a full negro out of a descendant of an Irish king, shut himself up in abject despondency. His friends talke 1 him into the idea of going to a hospital to be treated, and May 0 he was admitted to the Presbyterian. He was now as dark as any mulatto, and would be taken for one anywhere by any person, his otraight iron-gray hair and long iron gray mustache to the contrary notwith standing. Still his exact tint was not quite that of a colored man, thougti it took close and ob servant inspection to see the difference. He was of a very dark brown, as dark as the wrapper of a strong cigar, but the shade had a slightly dead and inky black look, not like that of a man with A'frican blood. This was chiefly noticeable in his face, where the Caucasian'flush shone a little through the dark tint and gave him an unnatural look for a colored man. The insid-is of his hands, too, were also of nearly the same color as the outsides. Ordered From a Kestaurani. On 3Jay 7, having been in the hospital tw o days and feeling encouraged, he thought he would like to go out for a walk. He walked around through the park and on the "Wcstsidc until about 1 o'clock! Then he drifted into a restaurant near the park to get a dinner. He sat down at a table and the waiters looked askance at him, but no body came to get his order. He hammered on the table with a plate, and after he had exercised himself in this way for awhile the proprietor, who had been eyeing him over the top of his desk with the hope that he would take the hint and get out, came up and said: ".Now stop that and light out. "We don't serve colored people here." "But Oi aiu't no colored maiij" said "Welch, who still talks with a burr in spite fo his long years on America's free soil. "Oi'm no more colored than yisself. Oi'm as white a man as you are," said "Welch, "and yc'e got no right to put mi out" But the proprietor was not going to ad mit any equhocation about the evidence of ins own eyes, bo ne saiatnatii weicndiuat go and at once he would call his waiters and have him put out. So "Welch said he would go, but the proprietor had made the great est mistake of his life. "Oitcll yez Oi'm white," he shouted. "O'ini white as yisself. Can't vou tell a white man when you see one? Look at my hair and see for yourself." But the proprietor wouldn't look at any thing but Welch's mahogany face, and out he went with a bevy of grinning waiters making merry over his discomforture. Probably that made "Welch madder than all the jest, having been a waiter himself and grinned at other people. Another Deadly Insult. He sought another restaurant, and the proprietor this time met him suavely at the door and told him firmly, but kindly, that he could not afford to have the custom of colired people. "Welch protested again, but the proprietor was unmoved. "Well, look at my hair, said "Welch. , "You can see from that Oi'm no nagur." I The proprietor looked at the hair, but wasn't convinced by that either. "Why," he "aid, "I've se'en lots of niggers with straight hair. Yon can't plar that on me." "Welch said he was Irish. But the restau "Timfi3aii said he didn't care if he was the Grand Duke of Ireland, he couldn't come in there. The next attempt was the last After that "Welch gave it up. Here he was received in grim silence, and after a while a waiter came and put down in front of him an odd lookiug bill of fare and went away. On this bill of fare the cheapest viand was "liver and bacon," S3 73. Coffee was Si a cup and bread 75 cents a slice. A sirloin steak cost S7 50. Mr. "Welch had-bcen around restau rants too much not to know the significance of all this. He got up and went out That day he dined at the hospital and has been content to stay there ever since. His condition has not varied much from day today, but Tie has not got any better. His color has gone on slowly growing darker. The change is just perceptible from one week's end to another. He is now about two shades darker than he was when he reached the hospital. If he lives long enough he will be totally black. The Cause of It AIL The real trouble with "Welch and the cause of his extraordinary change of tint is, being translated, a trouble with his gall duct, and is something like a very extreme case ofjaundice. To the extent with which he is afflicted with it it is very rare, though such cases have been recorded. The scat of the difficulty lies in the gall duct, which connects the gall bladder with the liver, which it supplies with the bile used in the process of digestion. In cases of diseased liver or deranged stomachs a gall stone sometimes passes from the gall bladder to the liver. The gallstone is a hard fragment something like a piece of coral, with little spurs sticking out all over it The gall duct is very small and the 6tone -passing along tears and scratches the walls of the duct producing great suffering. It is usual in cases of severe pain to give morphine, and after a few days the gall Etonegets through the duct and the patient is relieved. It is possible, however, for the little spurs on the gall stone to catch so firmly in the duct that the stone sticks there and becomes impacted. The bile thereupon flows into the system, producing jaundice or a disease analagous to it, and finally death, unless the obstruction works itselflooe. It is the opinion of the hospital surgeons that this is what is the matter with' "Welch, only in his case the flow of the bile into the eysieia uas gone on very mucn longer than I 3r7TpJ in any previous case that they have ob served. Welch Doomed to Death. The hospital records show two previous cases of a somewhat similar nature. Both of these were women who were brought in as,suffering from jaundice. In each case a gall stone was found to have become im pacted in the gall duct The color of these patients, howevcrt was no darker than that ordinarily found in cases of jaundice; that is to say, a distinct yeUow tinge over all the body. It grew slightly darker as the case went on, but was not at any time dark enough to particularly attract attention. Both of these cases ended fatally. In fact, there is scarcely any chance for a patient in such a condition. The doctors,at the hospital are doing their utmost to save Welch, but they have not much hope. "Sothing but an operation in nil probability can remove the stone that has lodged in his gall duct, and an operation to a point at such a depth would bo out of the question. The present object of the doctors is to set up an action that will clear the system Tf bile, but the fact that Welch continues to grow darker is looked upon as evidence that e is not getting better. He may nevertheless live for weeks or months. "He has already gone so far beyond the usual limit for persons in his condition that his hold on life seems to be extraor dinarily strong. Originally he must have had a p'owerful constitution.
