5sa BUSINESS IS SMALL In the Pig Iron Market, in Spite of , the Light Production. EASTERN STEEL EAIL PUECHASES. Much Comment on Heavy Rejection of Pittsbnre Billets. STATE OP THE FOEEIQN METAL MAEKETS : IcrlCIAL TELIOBAX TO THX DISPATCH. t Xew York, May 7. The condition of the iron and steel markets of the country is re ported as follows by tbe Iron Age: American Pis Current business Is small, buyers actios in a very conservative manner. Prices continue without Improvement, in spite of the light production In all parts ot the coun try. An interesting recent transaction is the Ealo by a furnace on the Hudson river, of 5,000 tons of Bessemer pi: to the Connecticut Malle able Iron Works, at private terms. Northern brands are quoted at !1718 for No. 1;S1616 50 for No. 2, and Mull GO lor cray forge. South ern iron sells at S16 50Q17 25 for Ho, 1; ;13 60 IB 25 for No. 2, and tUQU 50 for cray force. The b amine f the engine home of the Troy Iron and Steel Company Is expected to lead to outside purchases of Bessemer pic- The two furnaces in blast were making about 10,000 tons of pic in a month. Spicgeleisen and Ferro Manganese Im porters claim that prices have been considerably advanced abroad, the German works declining to came figures on account of troubles in the coal trade, w bile the English makers ask 87s, which makes the cost considerably above recent nominal quotations. In the absence of any de mand whatever in this country little interest is shown iu the matter. Ferro manganese is dull at $63 50g64 0U. Billets and Rods There has been a little busi ness in domestic billets, which wo qnote at $27 5028 delivered. We noto, however, that some of the leading mills quote considerably above this. Thus one mill asked for a price on .35 carbon billets of somewhat unusual form, asked 32 50 at mill, while another demanded $36. There has been considerable comment lately on the heavy rejection some time since. East and West, of billets made by a very prom inent Pittsburg milL In some cases the billets have been taken after a heavy allowance had been made. In others they were rejected abso lutely and had to be replaced. We are informed that the concern in question has acted in the most liberal manner in the matter and that the trouble first experienced hai been overcome. Wire rods aro dull at $3S3S 50 t mill. The Troy bteel and Iron Company inform us that the fire at the furnaces will cause no withdraw al from the steel market. Steel Kails Ihe most Interesting feature ot the week has been the rumor that an order for .000 tons of rails has been taken by an Eastern works, which has cot rolled any rails for some years, and whlob Is not a member of the asso ciation. The nurchaser is renorted to be a New York road. We note also, that an Eastern road has availed itselt ot an earlier option to take 4,000 tons, and that an Eastern mill re ports the salo of a Z,TJ00-ton lot. Quotations re main unchanged, at 530 75 at tldowatcr, $30 at Pittsburg, and f31 at Chicago. Rail Fastcnlncs The anlka manufacturers were unable to agree at their meeting in this city last week, the opinions being divided as to advancing tlio prico to $2 25 or not, the majoilry apparently not believing Intho possibility of holding at such a Qgnrc. NewYoiik, May 7. The Jion Age thus re ports the foreign metal markets: Jn .London the improvement in the Scutch warrant market that started In lAtt week made further progress, stimulated In a good measure by some alarm on the part of the short interest, due to improve ment In tbo consumptive demand and steady depletion of stocks in the face of further additions to the number of furnaces in blast. Hematites have advanced with the remainder ot the market. Improvement is noted in the consumptive demand for most varieties of pig Iron. Latest transactions In warrants were at 4Ss. 9d. for Scotch, SDs. Bd. for Middles borough and 49s. for hematite, showing a slight decline on the latter. Pig tin Prices have advanced about 1, and the market is strong, chiefly on brisk demand for near future deliveries. The decrease that has taken place of 1,100 tons in the visible sup ply and light shipments from the East last month have also served to impart a better feel inc. Copper is steady at about 1 advance. Stocks show a decrease of fc59 tons. Chile charters in the last half of last month are advised as being only 700 tons. Transactions in furnace mate rial include 400 tons of Montana matte on prt Mte terras, and 114 tons of anaconda at 9s. 9d.. delivered at Liverpool. All of the Cereals Open High but Take a Downward Direction Under Pressure to Sell Provisions Partly Sympa thize, hut Close Better. CHICAGO-The wheat market did cot make good its early promise of an advance in values for the day. On the contrary, it suffered a decided break from its early advance, closing fie lower for July, but Jfc higher for May than it closed yesterday. The conditions were rather favorable for the bulls. Cables came in bringing news ot firm and higher prices at Liverpool. The shortage in the French wheat crop was estimated at possibly 90.000,000 bushels. Under these various InflnencesthesborUbe Mnie demoralized and hpc-an to cover, thus assisting the advance. July opened at SI 00 1 00, rote to SI 02. On this advance the big bear operators were quietly selling wheat through the various commission firm. Their offerings finally stopoed the rise and started prices in the other direction. It declined from $1 OIK to SI OlJi then to SI 01, holding for some time at eacn of these points. At SI 01 the pressure was temporary removed, and a reac tion to SI 01 followed. Then it took a header downward to S8c strengthened near the close and closed at 99X99Jc Corn opened rather excited. Receipts were light; there were a good many buying orders and the shorts were inclined to cover. July started In a rather ragged way at 61J662J4c against 6lJc at the close yesterday and ad vanced to 63J-eC. The advance brought out more liberal offerings. The break In wheat was felt sympathetically and the price slid down to 61J-JC, closing Ha higher at the closing figure of yesterday. The oats market was governed by wheat and corn. Jnly opened at 47X47c, against 47c at the close yesterday, advanced to 48c broke with the other cereals to 46Kcand closed at 4bMc Iu provisions, as in grain, there was a sharp rise at the outset, then a long period of dnll ness and sagging markets and finally a slump. Nothing; Like a Boom in Business, but Values 'Well Up Mors Gains Than Losses Boston Boosts Electric Tractions Still Climbing. Room traders manifested no special vim at the local Stock calls yesterday, and sales dropped to 330 shares, furnished by Philadel phia, Wheeling and Ohio Valley Gas, Citizens' Traction and Electric New York did little but watch and wait The outeomo of the rail road meeting was unsatisfactory. The only bullish factor was a report that the crops had sustained less damage from frost than re ported. Locally, while the market was comparatively dull It was distinctly strong, nearly all the changes being advances. Electric was boosted on Boston selling. It sold np to 15, there, and closed with 15 bid. Here it sold up to 16 after opening at liji: and closed at 15 on light offerings. A stated, much ot the steam was furnished by Boston, but there was considera ble local demand from those who think the stock Is in good shape for a further advance. There was the usual talk of consolidation with the leasbd companies and of a full statement at the next meeting of the company, which may or may not be true. Nobody knows. This from the New York Journal o Finance is to the point: "Nothing daunted at the outcome of the Westlngbouse meeting the gossips are resuming their vocation. It is now said that tho reorganization contemplates a union of the Westlngbouse. Sawyer-Mann and United States Companies with a capital of $12,000,000, and that the Westlnghouse stock will go iu on a basis of 00 per cent." The strength ot the stock indicates a favorable outcome. ot Mr. Westlngbouse's negotiations, but beyond this all is conjecture. The scrip sold up to 66, an other favorable straw. The Tractions were among the strongest features of the market. Citizens' sold up to 67, Pittsburg advanced to 36 bid, and the rest we're steady. It is now the general belief that these properties will furnish the bulk of the summer business. There is plenty ot the stock to go round nearly all held here. Philadelphia Gas held its own and Wheeling moved up a peg. -There was a trade In Ohio Valley at 21 the first for a long time. Manu facturers' advanced to 23K bid. There was a moderate Inquiry for bank stocks, but none tor Insurance. Luster Mining closed afractbja. better than the -opening. The market however, offered tbo usual stub born resistance to the 1 downward movement, and gave evidence that there is no real diminu tion of the confident spirit which has animated it for the last month. The bulls are laying great stress on the grain situation in France, and private cables are full of the promise that there will be a large demand for American cereals during the season to come. They, therefore, look for an early cessation of the outward movement of gold and the creation of a large amount of commercial bills with which to pay trade balances. Most of the selling to day was from Chicago, but was attributed to realization obly, and outside of the etooki in which that center Is Interested there was little weakness In the market, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St Louis being a prominent ex ception. The upward movement in Cordage was con tinned, notwithstanding the expectation that the manipulation would cease after the stock reached par, but the Improvement was neutral ized in the late weakness In the market This weakness-was due to the announcement of 'heavy shipment of gold for Saturday's steam ers, xne pressure 10 sen was most conspicuous in the Jnuustriali and the Grangers, but the reaction reached to all portions of the list and each new announcement of gold taken for ex port sent prices down farther.
