M0J1E BL001I NOW THAN IS NEEDED Foliage Affords Sufficient Protection Defj Even Snow. to BURSTS OF SDNSHI5E PROMISED TO-DAI "Well, up to 4:40 p. m. yesterday the fruit bloom in this section was still in j;ood condition, notwithstanding dire predic tions and Bloomy forebodinps ou tlie part of eTen people of large experience. 'Squire Kobe't K. "Wilson, of Leetsdale, who of late years has devoted as much attention to fruit culture as he has to banking, made a thorough investigation, and he states that if all the blossoms that are yet uninjured come to maturity it will be necessary to prop the branches of the trees or ease them of a part of their load in some other way, else they will break. He states the bloom has reached that state of development that only a fierce black frost will bnrt it, these dry, white ones having no effect whatever, though had they come a week ago during a time of wet weather, the result would have been serious. Mr. "Wilson stated that he had examined cherries and pears as well as apples and found them all in good shape. Still Hopes of a Big Grape Crop. Mrs. Brenn, of Ewing's Mills, said she feared her grapes were all destroyed, but Mr. John Arrass states that grapes are fre quently destroyed in spots only by frost and it might be that in some localities they are tilled, while in others, a few rods distant, they may be all right. Mrs. Brenn's vine yard is in a deep hollow, where frost strikes level e!y. Mr. Arrass stated that he had examined cherrits and found them In good shape, lie state; that nben the bloom of a chcrn decajs it forms a dry envelopo which protects tUe embryo so long as the covering re mains and it is still intact. It miglit be added that the foliage is now so advanced that it forms considerable protection. Mr. Arrass ;il-o slates that experience lias proven that cool, even lather cold tteather. is necessary during blooming season to mako a perfect crop of apules. If a person of middle age who has lind in the country will taxhis memory he will discover that such weather as this has not been uncommon in May. People m tins latitude liaTe olten been stopped In corn planting by a eutm storm. A reporter of this paper walked about five miles across the country yesterday morning ex amining each orchard he passed, some above tlie coal and others as low as the river bants. He fuund a small percentage of apple bloom destroyed in everv orchard he saw, but not above 5 per cent in any. Some people fear pea cues are Injured, while others think them all right. Some also expressed the apprehension that so much chilling, while it does not kill the bloom, may cau-c the fruit to tail later in the season, while otlicrs scout the idea and sav that all the frost ings so lar has been merely beneficial. AVarm Weather Is Promised at Last. There was no frost night before last. Soon after nightfall the sky was overcast; the wind arose and blew where it listed and with such force as to blow away frost. After a slight sprinkle of rain there was a light fall of snow, vhich whitened the hilltops. This settled all apprehension of damage from Weanesday night's weather, signal Service indications poin.ed toalicht frost last night with higher temperature for to-day, and the wind began shifting trom the North about noon. In the Vest the temperature did not fall below 60 and there was a considerable rainfall in East ern Ohio The "lunatics'1 seemed to be diviaed in opinion. Most of them say a lrost in the light of the moon is not likely to do much harm, but now some of the opposition school are com lorting themselves with the reflection that the present heavy frosts are comparatively harm less on account of their falling in the light of the moon. It might be a good idea to have an ecumenical council to settle this question. The "Irosty sons of thunder" among the Pennsyl vania Dutch in bomersetand other mountain counties in years gone by protected their orchards from Irosts by fctormg piles of litter of vanous kinds under the trees during the da, and on clear, frosty mornings, about S o'clock, they would arise and light them, caus ing a dense smoke which warded off the dan ger. It is not a costly preventive and imght be adopted with profit in all parts of tbe country. MOTJNTAIKS CLOTHED IN "WHITE. Flow Falls All Over Western Pennsylvania, but Does Xiittie Damage. One to Be Made Out of Aluminum audto Be Knn'by Electricity THKUCGH A STORAGE BATTERT. Mr. Cable Claims lie Can Overcome All tbe Obstacles In tbe Way. A HBW MATBBUIi FOB LIGHT IACHT8 D. J. Cable, the electrician, walked into the Central Hotel yesterday with a package under his arm that looked like a concealed bird cage. As he laid it on tbe counter he said: "I am goin (p build a pleasure boat out of aluminum to be propelled by electri city for Theodore Hostetter. It is an en tirely new idea, but after a number of ex periments I feel sure the boat can be built I have in this package the storage battery, which is au invention of my unole, and it also is made of aluminum. It is strange to me that aluminum has not been used in making the light sculls for oarsmen. "Up to this time no solder has been found for aluminum, and the difficulty has been to fasteu tbe 'pieces together, but I have a method by burning them which will make the pieces secure and watertight. I propose to put a screw on the boat which will be worked by the new storage battery. Tbe ordinary battery is made out of lead, and would swamp a canoe or boat intended for six persons on account of its great weight. The battery of aluminum will not weigh more than two pounds, and will be strong enough to produce 50 volts. Possibilities of an Aluminum Battery. "It is an easy matter for a man in taking a long canal trip, for example, to stop at a town, and have the battery recharged when it runs down. "Aluminum is one ot the lightest and most durable metals known. ' My idea is that this boat which will carry from four to six persons will not weigh more than from 60 to 70 pounds and any man could lift it out of the water and carry It from place to place.- It will be as bright as a new silver dollar, and will make a very showy appearance on the water. If the reflections from tbe sun on tbe metal are V dazzling for the eyes tbe in side can ho painted dark, leaving the outside glistening, like the nn of a shark. There is no reason why yachts and pleasure boats could r.ot be built out of aluminum, and electricity used as ihe motive poner. Alumi num can be bought for 81 .a pound, and such boats would not con a great deal. As this one for Mr. Hostetter is somewhat ot an experi ment we are not figuring on the price, and it may tako as much as 1 500 .to make it complete. Mr. UostPtter is very fond of boating in the rivers, and he has several canoes at Lake Chautauqua. He Is fascinated with the idea of au aluminum boat, and there is no telling where tbe plan may lead to. Sculls Made From the Rustless Metal. The possibilities of aluminum are wonderful, and some day tbe metal may take tbe place of iron. I have long entertained the idea of mak ing such a boat, but tbe heavy storage battery was the hardest problem to overcome when I happened to think of this light one invented by my uncle. Captain Sam Brown intended to try it on some of his river boats, but tbe Cap tain is a busy man, and very much interested in horse flesh, and so tho experiments nere never made." Mr. Cable is very enthusiastic on tbe subject, and baa invented a nnmlwr of yafuable elec trical articles. He claims cheapness, durability and speed for the boat. It will be constructed so that four uprkht pots can be erected, bear ing a canvas covering to keep off tbe rays of tbe sun. These posts can be removed and laid In tbe bottom of the canoe when not in use. Mr. Cable has commenced work on the boat. The battery is small and will not occupy very much space. He expects to see the lime come when sculls will bo made altogether outot aluminum. The metal will not absorb water, is smooth on tbe sides and tbe friction between tbe scull and stream would bo much reduced, matiuc it possible with the light weight for the sculling record to be lowered several notches. It is also probaola that even steam boats and larger craft can be built out of tbe metal. Sight Is Priceless.
