MUCH BUSINESS OP IMPORTANCE To Be Traveled at the Present Three Days' Session in This City. V-VK OP THE FIRST DAT A5D EVENING The fifteenth regular convention of the Emerald Beneficial Association opened yes terday morning in St. George's Hall, Lib erty avenue. The proceedings will occupy about three days, and much business of im portance to the order is expected to be ac complished. This is the first time the asso ciation has met here since 1877. The business of the day was inaugurated by the delegates attending solemn high mass in the Cathedral, alter which they formed outside and marched back to the ball, preceded by the band of Branch 87. The convention was called VO order at 10:30 o'clock by the President, Edward T. O'Friel, ot Ahoona, and at this time there were about 80 delegates present S. H. Gllson, of this city. Chairman of the Keception Committee, made a happv address of welcome, which was responded to by the lion. J. J. Thomas, of Carroltun, Cambria county. William A. Great Growth of the Society. The President concluded bis address by re marking that the organization bad been founded at Beading in 1869, by 18 Catholic lay men, and that it had grown from that date to a membership of 3,500 in S3 branches. The report suggests the ad visability of continuing tbe deduction of 5 per cent from assessments, and increasing the re serve fund, as the time will come when the death rate will increase, and this deduction will equalize assessments so that they will not become burdensome. 1 be report was received and Its recommendations were referred to the Legislative Committee. The work of the convention last night was almost exclusively routine. The committees to which were referred the reports read at the afternoon session reported and indorsed tjio various recommendations that were contained in tbe reports. Addresses on the good of the association and its advancement were delivered by Patrick Kilgallon, Alderman J. A. Donovan and Kev. Father McBride. Tbe convention then adjourned until this morning.
