THE KING IS HERE. Another Great Pitcher Arrives in Pittsburg to Sign To-Day. CtEYELAKD'S FINE TEAM OX HAND. Pinters About Kentucky Horses Entered for llie Erooklyn Handicap. GENERAL SPORTIJG SEWS OF THE DAT That well-built, good-lookinjr, lnncli-talketi-of acd long-Iooted-for youne man, known to the baseball profession as "Silver" King, arrived in the city last evening. He comes here to pitch brll for the local club, and with that end ia view will sign a con tract tit!i the club this morning. Kiss lias made a preat reputation as a pitcher, and on that account he is to receive a very- bis; salary 55,000 from the local club, cud if he can sustain his reputation, he will doubtless be worth the money. He is extremely anxious to pilch as good ball as he ever pitched in his lite and thinks he has joined one of the strongest teams he has ever plaved in. He is in tolerably fair condition, but he will need a little more practice befoie he faces any opponent. He may pitch in one of the Cleveland games Ihisvcek. Dunne tbe last few weeks he has been taking plenty of exercise, but he has not had sufficient pitching practice. Now that Kins; is bore the old question, "Who will go?'" conies up. Whoever the players are that will be released it is not likely that they will be dispensed tilth for a few days. But It is certain that three or four whose names have already been mentioned in this paper will be released. It is understood that until Kins sets fairly into pitching form none of the pitchers will be let eo, and it may Lc that Gal m mil not bo leleased at all. The "Old laport" has done very well so lar, and it looks as if be will soon be just as effective as ho ever was. Certainly the clnb has the strongest pitruins force in the Leasrue if the pitchers were onlj able to do their best work. The fact that so many first-class pitchers have been se cured br the club meaus that the managers arc joins everything possible to merit the patron-aj- of the public 1 he Cleveland team arrived from Cincinnati last evening and. coining as they do fresh from the cene of four straight victories, they are hard to convince that defeat awaits them here. Manager Leadley is justly proud ot his men. They are aood players, and it v. Ill demand the best lmd of plajlng to beat them. They are all :c good condition, and will make the local nine hustle very haid to day at Exposition Pork. .Manager i.eadley has been keeping "Cyclone" Young particularly to meet the Pittsburg rlug ger to-dav. Mr. Young is one of the "cannon-tiall-sneed" tiwrlers, and the notion of the Cleveland niauazer is that the Pittsburg thnaiwers will never see the ball Zimmer is underlined to catch the speedy man. and cer tainly they arc a great pair. The Kentucky con tingent consider the Brooklyn Handicip as won by tiieir champion, tbe 6-year-old horse Teuton, wliosn impost in the star event at Gravcscrd is but 10S pounds. From time to time money has been coming into New lork to he rlaccd on the son of Ten Tiroeck, until his pneo lias receded lrom 100 to 1 to 10 to i. and very little money can now he placed at even those short figures. A f ow days ago Jim Murphy, who is preparing the horse lor the race for ilr. Holloway, took Teuton out ffir'a trial spin of a mile and a quarter, a score of watches wero held on the trial, and the slowest made the time 2:10. while some wero stopped at 2:10. The last milo was covered In 1:12. and the on-lookers were amazed when thev looked at their timepieces as the horse galloped tbe diitance in hand, and could have gone very much faster. The weight carried was 110 pounds, and the South Is ringing with the glad tidings. Teuton is due at Gravesend on .May JL. and on May IS we shall see w hat we shall see. The horse will be well ridden m tbe handicap, as Dave Pulsifer has released PIko Barnes to Mr. Holloway for that race. This is a sure indica tion that Tennv will not bo a starter, and it is evident that Donovan will not hurrythings with his great horse. He -nil! be ready for the Suburban if the lameness does not return again, but to a man up a tree it looks as though he would be sent lor the rich Metro politan Handicap, which will be run at Morris Park two weeks before the Suburban. Somebody is backing Riley fortho Brooklyn, and backing him very heavily at that, as the local books have been fed steadily for a week or ten daj s past. This fact and Ed Cornwall's announcement that Riley will not be at Gravesend at all. and perhaps not at Shccps bead Bay until the autumn, do not hitch. There is hardly a possibility of anybody bet ting $100 or so on Riley unless he knew te would get a start for the money. Corrlgan is sly. and we may take it for granted that the bigLongrelluw colt will be hero for the Brook lyn. The race will be worth $15,000 to the winner, and it is certainly a prize worth striv ing for. Riley is doing well In his work at Nashville. DaseBall Notes. OPENixGdayatBoston and BrooUyn to-day. THE DRIFT OF TRADE, The Strong Bull Movement in Cereal Lines Noted at tbe BEGIK1SING OF THE WEEK IS OVER. Eastern Tanners are Bearish on Hides, and Western Bullish. H1U5ESS LEATBEU IX FAIE DEMAND OFFICE OF PITTSBURG DISPATCH. I SATURDAY, April 25. $ Produce. In general produco lines there have been few marked features the week past. Eggs have not been in supply equal to the demand, and tendency of markets has been upward. Large quantities have beeu stored away, with a view to higher prices at an early day. It now looks as though eggs have touched their lowest point for this season, and that they who prophesied that prices would drop to lc apiece have proven false prophets. The McKmloy tariff has had the effect of keeping Canada hen fruit from our markets, and thus prevented tbe low price of former seasons. Cereals. At the beginning ot the week there was a strong bull movement in cereal lines, a move ment which became too strong to be healthy. There was a sharp advance in prices all along tbe line, which was in a measure legitimate. But speculative influences soon entered into the boom, which sent it beyond the legitimate line. For a day or two past the natural reaction has appeared, and urices aro considerably below the highest point reached. Flour, whicn has advanced a half dollar a barrel in the week, is, however, firm at the advance. Hay, oats and corn are lower than they were a week ago. The Hide Market. Eastern tauners are still bearing markets, and are buying sparingly in the hope of lower prices. On the other hand Western tanners are buying up all offerings of bides and calf skins at present prices iu the taith that bottom has been reached. If Eastern tanners had bought their usual quota Instead of hold ing back, there would have been an advance in prices before now. The future of the bide market entirely depends on the better trade. If leather should improve as it usually does at this time or earlier then bides aud calfskins are suro to advance. But if it does not then hides will continue dull. According to prece dent, products of Allegheny tanners will soon be iu good demand. Quality of these products gives ihem the lead when once trade revives. as it i, there is less accumulation of stock than a year ago. The advance in cattle of late gives the as surance that any future change iu price of hides must be toward a higher level. Killing Quotations. A Good Business During the Week, With Better Prices for Almost Everything. The week was a fairly good one iu local stocks, total sales aggregating 3,430 shares, tbe bulk furnished by Philadelphia Gas and Electric, against 2,876 the previous week. The improve ment in sentiment was as marked as iu busi ness. Closing prices Saturday, as compared with those of the previous Saturday, show advances in Manufacturers' Gas, Pipeage, Philadelphia Gas, Central and Citizens' Traction and Luster. The only properties on tho acti70 list tbat closed at a loss were La Noria, Electric and Airbrake, and these were fractional. Tho greatest improvement was made by Citizens' Traction. It commenced the week at 57 and finished at 62 bid, with sales after call at 63. The highest point touched by Philadelphia Gas was 13, by Electric 14, and by Luster 13. Local sales Satmday were 10 Ceutral Trac tion at 18 and 50 Philadelphia Gas at 12. Improvement in financial matters issbown by the steady growth, of Clearing Honse ex changes, and also by heavier checking. Ex changes for the week were about S700.000 iu ex cess of those for the previous week, which, in turn, were about the same amount ahead of tbe week bcfOre. Country Produce Jobbing Prices. Creamery butter is unusually scare In this market, so scarco that jobbers are not able to fill orders. There is general expectation of an advance next week. Country butter, on the other hand, is plenty and lower. Old cheese is pretty well cleaned up, and new is not coming in freelyenough to meet demand. Eggs are in limited supply, and are very firm at prices quoted. Supply of home-raised vegetables, though larger than any time this season, is still not up to demand. Cabbage is tho only article in vegetable lines that drags, and tbe reason is that large quantities of mfeiior goods from the South are being dumped onto uur markets of late. The strongest stocks of tbe day were Northern Pa cific preferred. Union Pacific, Rock Island and St. Paul among the leaders, and among tbe usually inactive list Wheeling and Lake Erie, Louisville. New Albany, Chicago and Pitts burg, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis. An other advance of nearly 3 per cent in Louis ville, New Albany and Chicago to-day was made on tbe announcement tbat the floating debt of the company bad been paid, and tbat new traffic arrangements have been made with tbe East Tennessee and Lake Erie and West ern roads which will have a most favorable effect on earnings of the first named road. The payment of the dividend of the preferred stock of Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis, together with the excellent statement, had the effect of making a sharp spurt in that stock, and it shot up to 65, retaining most of the gain at tbe close. The buying of Northern Pacific preferred, however, was the great featured the market, at fractions above first figures.
