8 A DAY FOR THE GRIP. The Weather Yesterday Had a Had Effect Upon lho Sick. ONLT A FEW XEW CASES REPORTED Physicians Still Say the Disease Is On Us Dowuward Path. WHAT THE HEALTH STATISTICS SHOW Yesterday was what may be termed grip weather, and a few more days of such low temperature with the corresponding damp ness and bone-eating atmosphere, cannot fail to add heavily to the death list. Especially seTere is such weather upon those who are suflering from the grip or any of the lung troubles. The promise made, how ever, by the Signal Service officer in Pitts bur, based upon bulletins from "Washington, should give courage to those who may be disposed to feel tearful of its results. Clearing and fair weather is predicted for to-dav, though it is likely to remain cold. The comfort for grip sufferers is in the statement that it will be warmer tomorrow. Bright, warm weather is what is needed just now. In fact, that will do more than a great deal of physic to help along those who in any way are suffering from the prevailing epidemic Observer Stewart, in telling just why there was a snowfall here, said that it was caused by the cold air from the 'West in the wake of the high barometer coming in contact with the low barometer, which was on Friday situ ated in the northeastern section of the State. What the Sick Teople Need. Of course, crip patients, or any other peo ple who are suffering, care little or nothing as to what caused the storm or how wide its bounds may have been, or, in fact, anything else pertaining to it. All they want is weather that will conduce toward helping them out of their misery. Skurrying sno w flakes, as a rule, hurt no one, but it is the abnormal condition of the atmosphere that makes the trouble with those who are now, or should be, in the doctors hands. The eflect of such weather as that of yesterday upon those pre disposed to the crip was bad, but according to the statements of physicians and drug gists, there are so few people who have not had the disease, in one form or another, that there is little upon which it could feed. The statement was made by a physician that such weather as that of yesterday could not affect any one who had thus far escaped the epidemic, unless through gross careless ness and the lack of common sense. Ordi nary care was all that was demanded. Be cause persons had escaped so far was no reason why they should consider that there was no danger lor them. There is and al ways will be dauger until the present condi tion of the atmosphere changes until warm and bright days drive away the miasma hanging over the to cities. "I do not know how it is in other parts of the city," said Dr. E. E. Gardner, of 'Wylie avenue, "but I can sately say that in the hill district the grip has lost' its hold. Of course I only speak from my own practice' and from what has been told me by fellow physicians." Bad for tlio Grip Sufferer. "Doctor, what effect will weather like this have upon the disease?" "It is unquestionably bad for those who arc suffering from the grip. As to its effect upon those who have escaped thus far I do not think it will be serious. The fact that thev have not been numbered among the sufferers should not make them believe that they arc impervious to the disease. Ji IR. KAUPMANNS weather of last Sunday and Monday, which was dor and warm, in my mind, did much to stop the progress of the disease. Such weather again will have the same eflect, and that is what is wanted. In Lawrenceville to-day I found two new cases, but I have not heard of any elsewhere for several days." The doctor was asked if he did not think the excitement over the grip had been the cause of a great many deaths. He re plied that among nervous people there had no doubt been a considerable death rate that could be directly traceable to over excite ment. "But," he continued, "while the grip has been epidemic there has been in my practice but little excitement, not as much as could have been naturally ex pected. Had it been small-pox or scarlet fever there would have been a rush from town, and still the grip has proved itself to be as deadly as either. Good for the Drngglsts. Quinine was in demand yesterday. The proprietor of a Fenn avenue drug store said that it would only require another day of such weather to run up the sales as high as they were in the last week of March. The sales had increased yesterday, but not to any great extent. The callers were mostly those who were suffering from colds and who-had the fear of the grip. A well-known specialist, speaking of the effects of the grip, remarked that it showed features this year that were not observable when it paid its first visit. It seemed now to afiect the nervous system in a variety of unusual ways, such as pains in the back and the head and a general depression. His opinion was that it did not so surely follow colds as last year, but seems to fol low the murky weather. The trouble has been and is, insisted the doctor, that people have thought lightly of their colds, believ ing that they would wear themselves out, and then 4he natural result came, affection of the lungs. The part of man's anatomy most subject to weather influences.the lungs, have been neglected. The report ot physicians to the Bureau of Health yesterday up to 5 o'clock showed only two deaths from the grip. They were those of John C. Fleister, aged 71 years, of 620 Lowell street, who was sick two weeks, and the cause of whose death is given as crip. The other is that of Michael D. Guzias, 29 years, of 1308 Murial street, the cause of death being given as congestion of the lungs. Some Deaths I"rom Friday. Yesterday the-following cases were re ported as having occurred on April 3, in addition to those published in yesterday's paper: Christ Kufelt, aged 69 years, Bouquet street, died of the grip, secondary cause pneumonia; iindget bmitn, aged 00 years, an inmate of the Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor, died from influenza, preceded by pneumonia; Xavicr Locflier, aged 73 years, 172 Thirty-ninth street, pneumonia; Martha M. Mekolen, 1 year old, pneumonia; Noah P. Grine, 20 years old, 3901 Mifflin street, pneumonia; Mar guerite Kennedy, 3 months old, pneumonia. Nearly all these cases are directly due to the prevailing epidemic. The report of the Bureau of Health for the week ending March 28 shows a total of 211 deaths. In the classification, 14 cases are credited to epidemic influenza, or grip. The cases that are allied to grip, either by following or preceding that disease, are as follows: pneumonia, 55; bronchitis, 16; asthma, 2; croup 1, and laryngitis, 1. The cases of consumption numbered 18; cerebro spinal fever, C; meningitis, 4; typhoid fever, 7; scarlet fever, 1; whooping cough, 3; measles, 2; convulsions, 8; heart disease, 6; peritonitis, j; Bnght's disease, C; old age, 8 Or the total death list, 29 persons were between 70 and 60 vears, 13 between 80 and 90, and 1 between 90 and 100. The nnmber of deaths in Allegheny last Saturday night is reputed at 115, a greater number than for any week since the office has been opened. The majority of these cases are believed to be directly traceable to the grip. The cemeteries in Allegheny, Pittsburg proper and the Southside show figures of interments that surpass anything ever known in Allegheny county. The un dertakers are continuing to take a partial rest, but the weather ot yesterday it is TOtMuigg2YvTND KAUPMANNS TO-MORROW TUESDAY WE WILL OFFER "OUR OWN RELIABLE" Is the name of the BOYS' SHOE Of which we shall offer 300 pairs To morrow and Tuesday at the specially reduced price of $1.50.
