'" H7E STOCK REVIEW." Ecceipts of Low Grade Beeres Large and Markets Lower. GOOD AKD PRIME CATTLE STIIOKG. Shippers of Lean EIne Receive Expensive Experience. GOOD SHEEP FIRM A!iD LAMBS WEAK OFFICE OF riTTSBUKO DISPATCH, WlDSESDAT, March i. There were 85 loads of cattle on the market at East Liberty yards on Monday morning and about 5 loads have been received since Monday. Last week only 70 loads were on sale and the week before 95 loads. Quality of this week's offerings was generally low. There were few cood or prime Dceres offered in proportion to the whole. Chicago was the main source of supply, there being aDout S8 loads from that point. The balance were mainly from Ohio and Indiana. On common and medium grades markets opened strong 10 to 15c lower on Monday than the previous week, and a goodly number tailed to find purchasers at the decline. Folly a dozen loads were shipped on in first bands, and tnree or four loads were in yards unsold this morning. Chicago shippers, who look upon this market as good dumping ground for low graae cattle, bare received some ex pensive lessons this week. The shipper who ciunes out whole on inferior stock may thank his stars. Probabilities are that be has been a loser. The run of prime light butcber beeves this week was light, and markets were steady at last week's prices. A few prime 1,500-ft cat tle v ere on sale, but the higuest price offered was oic Tins offer not being satisfactory, the holder concluded to try his fortunes in Eastern markets. There was a good inquiry forstock cattle, but bujers of fat cattle wero present in small num bers. One load ot good stockers weighing about BOO 2s was sold at S3 70. which was the highest price realized for this grade. Fresh cows wero plenty, and markets ranged from 20 to 40 per head. The range for veal calves wasocto6cper ft. With the. exception ot light, tidy butcher beeves, weighing from 1.100 to 1,200 ft?, markets were dull and slow at loner prices than ruled last week. If anything has been demonstrated the past few weeks it has been that Pittsburg is a very poor market for inferior grades of cattle. The sooner the snipper learns this tbe better for him and all con cerned. Sbecp and lambs The total run for the week bas been 15 carloads, and in the run tbe proportion ot choice stock has been small as usual. Good sheep were steady at last week's prices, but lambs were weak and a shade lower. The top of tbe market for sheep was So Go. this being paid for a carload of choice irnm the neighborhood of Columbus, O. The top price of Iambi n as S6 00, this price being paid lor a few bunches of lancy stock. Hogs Receipts for tbe neck have been between 43 and 50 carloads against little more than half this number last week. There were only I loads on sale this morning, and top price was 4c per ft Top price at Chicago at tbe same time was 1 3 55, or 5 to 10c lower than the day before. McCall & Co.'s Weekly Iteilew. A Lively Day In the Chicago Grain lMts A Stampede of Shorts While Values Soar Skyward Provisions Join the Procession. CHICAGO More than tho usual amonntof excitement prevailed In all the speculative markets this morning. Wheat attracted at tention early more from what It did tiot do. Tnere was no fault to be found on this score later in the da . With the corn and oats mar kets booming to the highest prices of these crops it was thoucht that early wheat should certainly have shown a marked advance. All who wanted tbe grain, however. seemed for time to have no trnnble in getting it from those who "already had it. The narrowness of the early market was all tho more surprising be cause ot tbe sensationally large de crease In l available supplies of wheat last week, as reported tins rooming by JiraditreeCs. sliowintr them to have decreased L772.000 bushels, 1,145,000 bnshels ot which de crease was at points on the Atlantic slope. r"or about 20 minutes tbe crowd would not believe in those fignres, they appeared so utterly out ot line with the official visible snp ply. but when their correctness was substanti ated there was an excited, scramble to buy. Hutchinson, King,Harlow and Schwarti Dupeeledthe early baying, but Hutchinson was apparently peddling tbe grain out agatn on tbe little bulges. 11 ean while corn valnes kept creeping up, ana they ultimately got so high that shorts In wheat could stand the strain no longer. They stampeded in a body, and values went soaring. May wheat( which had started at 97c and had ranged at SQ 97callthe mornins, got up to 97c about noun. Tbit was tho price at which niauy of the "calls" sold last night. It had sold so sear this price so many times before, that holders of these privileges had sold against tbem. As soon as the market overcame this barrier it went upward with a rush. By 120 May was up to L but it broke back to IWJJc in short order. Many holders ot grain had plenty to sell at the top price, and by tbls time most of the aborts were in out of the dampness. Corn acted suspiciously strong from tho start. There was no particular reason that was apparent on tbe surface for the strength be yond the Scarcity of contract corn in sight, but people just seemed to want it. Most of these were people who had sold it short. They found supplies very scarce. Holders of tho grain were waiting for large fractional bulges. When these came to bny the grain back, which they ultimately did, they found tbe market rising very fast. M av coi n started at 56Kc. sold for a moment at 56c, then crept np to o6a After reacting to 5bc, it again started upward, and after it once passed 58c the shorts were stam peded, and it went up to 5Sc in very short order. Oats were simply a repetition of corn. There was a good general demand, followed by a stampede of shorts. May started at 4Sc and ultimately reached 50c. Tbe provision market was apparently willing to settle back a little If let alone, bnt could not under the surrounding influence of the grain pits. May started about 2c easier than yes terday's closing figures, and the advices from the vards of 5.000 more hoes than Cad been looked for was tbe Cause ol the decline. Later there was an amended report making hog re ceipts 8.000 more than at first advised, and this caused continued depression. Speculators from tlie grain pits filed in among tbe provision brokers when, tbe former articles began to soar, and prices of hog products wore lifted bodily almost in spite of themselves. Shorts were the chief buyers. May pork de clinea from S9 85 at the start to S9 80, and ad vanced to S10 05. STOCE YARDS AGITATION SETTLED A New York man was in the city yester day trying to rent a large business house, but failed. This led him to say: "I am sur prised at the smallness of the rooms in which business ii transacted in Pittsburg. The most oi them are mere boxes compared with those in other cities. I notice there is plenty of room here in which to expand and build. The trouble seems to be that the lots were laid out originally too small. They met the de mands of that time, no doubt, but allowed noth ing for growtb. Tho consequence is that at tempts to carry on bnslness now in the same space as 40 years ago are failures. It can't be done." There is much truth In this. Those who bnild should not content themselves with one small lot, 17 or IS feet front but should bny at least three and pnt one large or two medium sized buildings thereon. This wonld make the owners more money, and at tbe same time bring in new blood and capital. There wonld be no delay in renting, such buildings being in constant demand. The sooner Pittsburg owners look at this matter in tbls light the better it will be for them aud tho city. e A Great Thoroughfare. Carson street, tbe principal thoroughfare on tbe Soutbstde, possesses some interesting feat ures. It is a hire of business. For two or three miles it presents' an almost unbroken ar ray of stores and shops, liberally supplied with everything necessary to meet the wants of tbe community. There are few large concerns, as tbo business is almost exclusively of a retail character. Millmen are the principal custom ers, and they want the best. Many of these stores are as handsomely fitted up as any to be found on this side of tho river, while the goods displayed are abundant and attractive. A trip from the Smithfield street bridge to xhirteentn street yesterday disclosed only two bouses to let. A few improvements were seen, but noth ing important. Most of the building is in the vlcmitv of the railroad bridge and on the hill tops. Tbe Introduction of rapid transit will in crease tbe Importance of Carson street by bringing all parts of it into closer relationship with the business and residence centers. Settled for Good. It seems to be settled that the East Liberty stockyards are not to be removed to Walls or anywhere else just now. Improvements about to be made in the way of buildings and exten sions show that they are to remain at Torrens. It is well that this matter bas been brought to a head. Its periodical agitation from time immemorial bas kept property owners and in vestors in an unpleasant frame nt mind. They wonld neither sell nor buy with the doubt hanging over tbem. But now that they know there will be no change tbey will be free to act. The removal of the yards would open the way to many valuable Improvements which are now impracticable. Tbere will be considerable building out there tbls season, but the bouses will be small. a Lower Allegheny. Tbere is a good movement in realty in the lower wards of Allegheny City, several sales having been closed within the last few days. Among these were three handsome dwellings on Allegheny and Kidge avenue". As but few of tbe transactions are permitted to reach the surface, it is impossible to make an estimate of tbe business done, but it is considerable equal, perhaps, to that of an equal area in the busiest part of the East End. Owners are not anxious to sell. Tbey aro holding back tor the opening of California avenue, which they think will stiffen values and stimulate Improvement certainly a reasonable conclusion. Business News and Gossip. A good volume of business was transacted yesterday, but there was no rush. The weather was bearish. A good business house is talked of in place of the old structure on the corner of Seventh and Carson streets, Soutbside. Mr. McMillan, who recently purchased the Bull's Head Hotel on Second avenue, is put ting in a new front and mixing other repairs. The Long-Wlshed-For Adjournment of Con gress Falls to Strengthen a Weak Market A Bally at Midday Succeeded by a Decline. New York, March 4. The final adjourn ment of Congress brought with it no change in tbe character of the stock market, aud Instead of tho broadening and widening expected tbere was rather a return to the narrowness and stag nation of tbe past week, even tbe few stocks which have given tone to the dealings for the last three days retiring into oblivion with the general list Tbe opening of the market this morning was made with some show of animation, but it was all in Burlington, Northern Pacific preferred aud Sugar, while prices were lower all along tbe line, and stagnation reigned in tbe whole list, with tbe exception of the threo leading stocks. Tbo strength in Sugar changed the current of prices upward, however, and a gain of m per cent in Sugar and fractions lu the otner stocks marked the early trading. Tbe upward movement however, was short lived, and a slow and steady drooping marked the dealings throughout the remainder of the day, which became more pronounced during tbe afternoon. The Grangers led off. followed by others, and in tbe afternoon, when the bears found that there was going to be no effort to advance prices, notwithstanding the shouts with which tbe announcement of the final ad journment ot Congress evoked, concerted au attack upon the list aU along the line, though Cleveland, Cincinnati. Chicago and St Louis, Bock Island, Pacific Mail, Northern Pacific, tbe Coalers and Lake Shore were most promi nent in the decline of tbe last honr. The de cline was sharp and no sign of a rally was seen. The market closed weak at tbe lowest prices of the day. The industrials were Better supported than anything on tbe regular list, but all closed loer. Tbe final changes are invariably in the direc tion of lower figures, and C C, C. A St L. is down 2; Bock Island. l:Lackawanua and Pa cific Mail, each 1: Canadian Pacific and Bur lington, each H; Northwestern, Sr. Paul and IN orthern Pacific preferred, each . and Mis souri Pacific, 1 per cent Railroad bonds were still dull, and a well distributed business of only 8733,000 showed no marked tendency in either direction until late in the day, when prices ran off slightly in sym pathy with the weakness in shares. Louisville. New Albany aud Chicago cousoli, however, was the only issue which displayed anv real weak ness, dropping 2 per cent to 84.
