SUICIDE MACHINE. -'Colorado's Murderers May Become Their Own Executioners. 'THE INVENTION OF A CONYICT. In a llinnte and a Half After Stepping on the 1 rap It Falls. A DIAL MEASURES OFF "THE TIME. Deitver, Cou, Feb. 28. Colorado's law makers irill, at this session of the Assembly, take a hand in adopting some late device for the execution of hnman beings, and may accidentally adopt some means superior to the electric method now in use in New York. Recently a plan was invented by one of the convicts serving a term in the Colorado Penitentiary at Canon City, by which James Jojce, a condemned murderer ex ecuted himself. Now a bill has been intio duced in one the Honses asking that this system of suicide be legalized and adopted as the means of carrying out the sentence of capital punishment, with an excellent chance of its becoming a law. The problem the iniector has attemcted to solve was to devise wme means by which the victim, by Ins own Act, would Jet the weight tail and hang himself. This problem has been solved by the methods described in this "article. Details of the Machine. A square platlorni, about three inches high, was placed in the center of the floor. This platform is bet over a spring, which bends down, about half an inch under the weight of a man. It is the descent of this platform that pull the "jerk" that releases the weight. But it has been so arranged that a minute and a half elapses between the time that the muu steps upon the platform and the time the weight falls. 18 a closet there are two Equare buckets, one above the other. The upper bucket, when it is full of water, weighs 40 pounds. It rests upon the end of a beam that moves lip and down on au axis. At the other end of the beam rests loosely an iron ball, which weighs 29 pounds. This ball is attached loosely to the rod that regulates the large weight in the wooden pipe. In a window in the wall of the death chamber is a dial. A hand on the dial is attached bv a string to a float in the lower bucket. As the water rises in the lower bucket the band moves from right to lelt across the face of the dial. It takes about a minute and a half to run across from one fide to the other. "Waiting; for Death to Come. V hen the victim steps upon the platform the descent ot the spring moves a rod that pulls a stopper and permits the water to trickle down from one bucket to the other. As the upper bucket becomes lighter it rises and the weight at the other end of the beam lowers at the same time the float in the lower bucket rises as the water pours in. The hand begins its progress across the dial, Tha upper bucket continues to asceud and the position of the weight at the other end of tne beam becomes every moment more precarious. The weight trembles there; the hand has well nigh made its journey across the dial. Suddenly the weight slips off the beam. It tails. By that fall it pulls the long arm that regulates the heavy weight in the wooaen pipe. The big weight falls with a crash and the man is jerked into the air. 4 He has executed himself!
