BLOWN BY MACHINES. Kew Method Being Introduced Turn Out Green Glass Bottles. to SAMPLES RECEIVED IN THIS CITY. Another Carpenters' Union Takes Up the Eight-Hour Protest. A DAI'S GRIST FEOil LABOR CIRCLES A new discovery seems to haTe been made in the manufacture of green class bottles, which, if successful, will no doubt create a revolution in the industry in Pittsburg. A few days ago a bottle was received t the headquarters of the Flint Glassworkers' Union from a firm in Xew Jersey, and with it came the statement that it was machine made. The officials of the organization were asked to examine it and return an ex pert opinion as to the merits of the article. The bottle was an ordinary 12-ounce one, and really had the appearance of being made by some other than the usual method. President Smith and Secretary Dillon both examined it carefully, but have not yet replied to the firm's request. In fact, they have not yet been thoroughly satisfied that the bottle is made entirely by machinery. They thiuk the bottle is blown by a machine and finished by hand. Kot being able to indorse the articre they thought their opin ion would be o! little value to the firm mak ing it. Making Buttles by Machinery. Inquiry into the matter developed the fact that the firm irnm which the bottle bad been received was the American Bottle Com pany, anew concern inc rporated a few months ago at Woodbury. X. J. For years the glass blowers have predicted that bottles could not be made by machinery, hat it is understood that the r.vw company is prepared to show the men wherp they have been wrong. 1 he company, which is said to be composed of some of the tuot prominent glass manufac turers of the East, has bought the patents on an English invention w Inch has been in use for a number of jeara with iatisfactory result. Vlnle little has Deen known of the progress of Hie nen method it Is now thought to be a suc is Men who were totally inexperienced in ilic handling ol glas, are now, after six necks practice, turning iut nearly as much ware as the .-neratre blower by the old process turned out w.th the te ol a blow pipe. The lullowmtr is a simple deccription of the method- The glass is cathered m the usual maiinrr and allowed to run front the rod into an iron cup. which hold;, the quantity needed for nnking the bottle. A hollow iron plunger at the bottom of the cup is pnshed up through the mass and the cup is reversed, leaving the Class in a plastic condition suspended from tbo liollo plunger, through which air is admitted. The "Second Operation Dispensed With, Tl.e cup, which is hinged, is then removed and the movement of a lever admits a small quantity of air. l'he bulb is then flattened at the bottom and dropped into the mold, which is then closed and the air applied. This opera tion completes the bottle and it is taken while liot to tbo annealing oven. By the old process the ring at the top of the bottle neck was formed by a second operation This is done sway with by the machine method and the bot tle comes l.-om the mold with a perfectly formed ring, thus greatly lessening the cost of irnduction. Word has been received here that five ma chines hare been set up and are m operation. and seven more are bcinc nlaied in position. If tlleliijcliinc urns out to be a success there will lie difficulty with the scale. The union will cither tight against the adoption of the machines fur general use or insist upon a new Male. ANOTHEE UNION JuIKS In the Trolest Against the Carpenters Light-Hour 3Ioyement. An important meeting of Local Union Ho. Ill, cou posed of carpenters, was held at the Corner of Federal street and Park way, Alle gheny, last ut;bt, A large number of members nterestedin the protest against the eight-hour movement were present, and that matter was the subj' ct lor discussion the entire evening. Iti- understood that Onion 211 has indorsed the protest already tent to the General Executive Hoard, aud steps yvere taken last nlttlit to further convince the board of the fallacy in making the movement here at this time. While it is now very evident that the eight hour movement will not be forced this spring, those whilavor tLe step are not losing cour age. On the contrary they are as persistent as Before the protest was entered against them, and some of 1112m go so far as to intimate that prominent members of the Carpenters' Coun cil are working under the dictation of their employers. It is quietly intimated Ihatthero will be a lively fichi in the carpenters ranks Tuef ore long. A NEW FEEIGHT OFFICE. Jfr. Lynn Appointed General Eastern Agent ol the Iowa Central. P. A.
