THE PITTSBURG' DISPATCH,' FPJDAT, -. FEBRUARY' 13, -1891.'- 3 STREET AND LOBBY. Tho Commercial End of Valentine's Day Pretty Well Brayed Out. I5TBCEST IN THE SEAL QUESTION. April to See the Carnegie Library Boots fieady for Readers. CHATS WITH THE TOPICAL TALKER Bins still rhymes with kiss, love with dove, mine anil lhinowith Valentine, bat the com mercial end of St. Valentine's Day is frayed out. The sending of valentines is not popular to anything like the extent it used to be. At all the stores where bt. Valentine's wares are sold this is the verdict, and at E'cbbaum's a gentleman said: "It is a fact that valentines are not what they used to be as merchandise, and this year the commencement of Lent three dajs before St. Valentire's Day has tended no doubt to cut down the demand for the tokens oflove. The ladies cling uiore affectionately :o the observance of the da than the men appa rently, for they are greatly in the majority as bujers of valentines. Another cantc of St. Valentine's decay I trunk is tnat it i too near Christmas. At Christmas and Scr Year's aow the practice of giving presents has as sumed immense proportions, and St. Valen tine's sutlers in consequence." How About That Sealskin? The Bering Sea question is interesting a whole host of reoplc who don't care a fig about international 'aw or diplomatic fencing. And most of all, women are attracted by it. The sealskin is knit in with the pursuit of happi-J ncssinthe feminine declaration of rights. How iiil the sealskin sacque emerge from the stn'e? There's the kernel which the women are look lag at. William Lyons. Jr., of Bennett .fc Co., said yesterday: "The sealskin coat is not destined to o out of use just jet; it will still be within the reach of a great many who are not million aire Hut sealskin has grown more costly since last spring, and it may rise in price again before next winter. You see the last catch of seals by the company which leases the Alaska seal fisheries from the Government numbered 21.000 seals. The company had the right to take 09,000 if they could that was tho limit set by the government, and you may be sure that the caught as many as they could. That was last srring, and the result of the small catch was that the price of sealskins wont tip 00 per cent. The late Secretary Windom sent Pi of. Elliott, of the Smithsonian Insti tute, to investigate the condition of the seal fisheries and in his report, recently made public he declares that the seals will be speedily exterminated if protective measnres are not taken at once. The seal pirates are re sponsible for this stato of affairs. The practice of the legitimate seal-hunters is to attack them on the land, at the proper season, and knock them on the head with club after the fashion that has been frequentl described. The p-rates shoot the seals wherever they come acioss them and chief!) in the water, and a great many of the seals thus shot sink before The hunters can reach them and are lost en tirely. The interest of the dealers in seal furs and of those who wear sealskin is plainly the same as that of the United States as set forth by Secretary Maine. Prof. Klhott suggests a close season to last seven years as a remedy, but that does not recommend itself to practical men. It is not necessary to stop the killing of seals for seven years; a proper protection of the seals from the pirates will insure a sufficient supply of skins to meet the world's demands. At present we are auxiously awaiting the result of the coming hunting season this spring, for by this w ill be determined the prices of sealskin for the year. The scale of prices, like most other things In the sealskin traue, is fixed in London. The London Exchange will announce the prices for the year in October next I cau say in all sin cerity that higher prices are to be expected." April Will Bring Books. Librarian Stevenson, with books on one side and a pile of catalogues ou the other, said: "The library is growing rapidly and it is possi We for me to say now that it will be open to the public on or perhaps before April L I in tend to begin the registration of leaders one week before the library opens. The applica tion of readers will be considered then and filed and by the time the library is opened e shall have the readers' tickets ready and things wiilmove smoothly from the first. On the shelves by that time there will be at least IO.C60 volumes, and tbej will be perfectly cata logued, too." Amateur Athlete in Closer. "Amateur athletics are to hae a better chance this j ear than they ever had before here," said W. H. Childs. "The Amateur Ath letic Association Is making great progress and its membership piomises to be as laige as is de sirable before spring opens. It is intended to make the association extremely exclusive, in the right sense of the word, and it has the right sort of officers to carry it to success. The pres ident. John Moorhcad, is an enthusiastic ath lete with i record to be proud of as a member of the Yale baseball and football teams. E. R. Dansui. the secretary, has lots of good ideas and an intimate knowledge of all that is best in athletics ac quired h-ro and in England, and with such well known men as W. J. Patton. O. D. Thomp son and Will Patrick to assist it. the association fs bound to make good headuav. Exposition Park will be prepared lor the association as soon as w nter lets go. and the 15 tenuis courts, ciiiucr track, and ladies' clubhouse with which ft will be provided, will make it the equal of any amateur athletic grounds in the State. The association will hold a spring meeting in all probability and then the strength of the new organisation will be demonstrated. At present there are between 80 and So members. It is also proposed to include aquatics in the asso ciation's sports, and the aavisabihty of getting one ol the old mansions on Djquesnc wav for a clubhouse is being discussed. If such a club house were obtained, a barge and boat house would be maintained lu connection with it, on the river, ai.d thus a pleasant way of reaching the association's grounds in Allegheny by water would be provided. The association is to be admitted this .eek into the Amateur Athletic Union, which will insure proper recognition, vtuch as the have never obtained hitherto for Piltsburg'sainatcur athlelts." Advertising Extraordinary. During the last two or three dajs there have teeen some novel and singular things toJie seen about the streets, and the theaters have been responsible for them. A half-sheet poster inside a cake of ice advertised a variety cotnuany in the cany part of the week, and yesterday seven or eight men paraded the streets between placards advertising one of next week's attractions. The Utterwere the counterpart of tne sauduich men, who are such common sights in Loudon. Ihe placards hung from their necks, and they created something of a sensation as they walked down Fifth avenue. I!nt their glorious progress was cut short by Chief Brown's stern decree that they were Illegal on the ground that thev upset the equanimity of the horses. The ice blocks were also ruled olf as calculated to disturb some body's peace of mind or queer the Signal Service predictions, perhaps. 1L J. She stated that wishing to secure a loan she had been induced by Jacober to buy ten shares ot stock. She was not satisfied with the certifl cate because it did not show that the stock was to be redeemable after 60 days. When the at tention of Jacober was called to this be said it made no difference. He promised to have the omission rectified, but never did. Mrs. Burke, of No. 57 Union avenue, Alle gheny, testified that she told Carey she desired to buy a $7,000 piece of property, and wished to make a loan. Ho told her she could buy 42 shares of stock and pay $12 per month for six months, after which the association would ad vance her the mnuey. Thereafter she would have to pay SS6 monthly for eight years. She gave Carey S30 to induce him to wait a short time till she was able to take the 42 shares. Carey came back and brought with him Eggleston, who, as a superior officer, treated with the witness and demanaed a mort gage for 0,000 on unencumbered property be fore the specified loan would be givon. She ie fused, whereupon he stated sho would have either to give him the mortgage, or tako out a certificate and wait two years for her money. With this the negotiation ended.
