frg w? tjw-vjwjrps? : THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH. WEDNESDAY, PEBRIJART 4, 1S9L THE EDGAR THOMSON. Thai Shnt Down in ihe Braddock Kail Mill Postponed a Week THAT A FEESa ORDER BE FILLED. Flans for Increasing the Capacity of the Edjrar Thomson. FINISHED STKMi AT CAXTOJf, OHIO OFFICE OF PITTSBURG DISPATCH. I Tuesday, Feb. a. Steel Rail Outlook. The average daily output of steel rails at the Edgar Thomson "Works for 1890 was 1,417 tons, which means that the daily yield was lufficicut to lav more than ten miles of single track 65-pound rails, or more than 4,000 miles for the year. To furnish these results required the handling daily of up ward of 10,000 tons ol materials. The water required daily at the Edgar Thomson is, in round numbers, 25,000,000 gallons. The largest cast from a single blast furnace In one day during the year was 437 tons. The largest ncekty yield of a single furnace was 2,462 tons, and the largest monthlj yield was 10.C04 tons. There are seven of the nine furnaces in opera tion at present, A and D being closed fur re pairs. On Tuesday and 'W cdnesday of last week, furnace II yielded S15 and 300 tons of Bessemer iron, and I 260 and 270 tons on tho satnedajs, with SOI tons on Monday. On the first three days of last week the yield of the seven furnaces in operation was 5,318 tons. It was announced last week that the rail mill would shut don n on February 7 for reDairs, and extensive preparations were made to this end. fcsince this announoement, a mill order for rails has come in which re quires a full week's work to fill, and the shut down has, as a result been post poned until February 14. The improvements in the rail works will be very extensive, and all the latest appliances will bo added Anew converting house, built almost entirely of iron, new cupolas, and four 15-ton converters to take the place of the 10-ton converters now in ue. a new Porter Allen engine of 2,000-bop.e po er, are f ome of the improve ments and additions projected. The rail mill and heating furnaces are to be rebuilt and en larged so that larger blooms can be charged than hitherto. From bt. Valentine's Day on these improve ments and additions will be pushed as fast as - muscle and brain can do the work. The work will lie pushed night and day, and occupation will be given to the entire fores of willing workers. Tho cost of the improements will be in round numbers $200,000. and the fact that rhe company is read to make such an outlay is proof of their faith in a good year ahead. 'ihe furnaces mil keep right along while tho null is being enlarged and improved, and the output will be woikcdup into lmuhed products at Homestead. Furnace A, which has been undergoing ex tensive lepairs for a month or two past, will bo rcad to resume some time this week, and D in about a month hence. With the nine furnaces work'ng up to their capacity the yield for 1891 will without doubt, break all previous records, and no fears are entertained that there will be armarket at reasonable profits for the entire nutpnt. bile margins on steel rails are fully SS per ton les than a year ago, it is believed that a reduction as great during the year to come which is exceedingly improbable, would Sot obliterate profits. Canton Steel "Works. - Colonel John J Yonng, formerly superin tendent of tbe Hussey, Hone & Co. Steel JVorks, of this city, for the past two j ears President of the Canton bteel Works, Canton, O., was in the citj yesterday, looking up busi ness interests. The Canton Steel Works make a specialty of spring and tool steel and much of their material is produced in this viunitv. Crop ends of steel blooms, produced at the Ed car Ihomson bteel Rail Works and other works of this region, constitute a largj part of ihe steel w orked up into spring and tool steel at tho Canton works. When President Young as sumed the managemen at Canton, tbe yearly eapacitj was about 3,500 tons, aud in the past j ear has reached 10,000 tons with orders more than equal to the entire production. Employment is given to over 200 men, and the demand for the finished steel last month was be ond any previous month. Some orders had to be declined because of inability to till them. Both open hearth and crucible steel are pro duced. Pre-ident Young has still a warm sido for Pittburs, whore many of his best years were spent, but has no reason to regret bis transfer to Ohio from a business point of view, lie pronounces the outlook for the finished steel trade altogether satisfactory. All Quiet In the Wheat Pit-Heavy Offer ings Make .Cower Prices Corn and Oats Featureless Provisions Weaker On Heavy Stocks. CHICAGO A quiet session succeeded the ex citement of the preceding day, but prices were more susceptible to news influences and were free from tbe agitation caused by abnormally heavy Individual trading. The influences were the cold weather and good lnquirv for cash wheat on the one hand, with dull markets abroad and small export clearances. Orders from outside were scarce, and tbe home talent was more disposed to study the situation than to make fresh ventures. There were sellers of May wheat in abun dance at SI Oiyi as soon as trading started, but buyers at tint figure were not found lor more than one, or tw o 5,000-bushel lot', and it was al most at the same instant offered down as low as $1 00 before purchasers cropped up in sufficient numbers to balance tbe deluge of offerings. Tho cables reported the English markets barely stead. The price kept within the range of 90cnnd SI 00& after the early de cline already noted, aud closed at SI bid. Oats were steady but less active, aud the mar ket presented the lifeless appearance that char acterized it preiious to yesterday's activity. Corn opened r higher than it closed ester day, at 54c, but that was the top price of tbe day w bile the lowest was only a lower. There was no excitement or unusual trading, unless the selling by Bryant of 400.000 bushels in one line to Hutchinson be so considered. The receipts of hogs exceeded tbe estimates made vesterday by b, 000 head, and tbe stocks of provi-ions were also hoavilr in excess of gen eral expectation, under which circumstances a weak market wisa foregone conclusion. There was a drop of 15c per barrel in pork immedi ately at the opening, and in a few seconds lard and ribs showed a loss of 5c. Armour W2s a seller of pork through several brokers at tbe opening, while Cuoahy and Chapm and Edwards sold ribs and lard. Ryan aud other packers were sellers on tbe call, about which time the lowest prices of the day were ruling. Tbe leading futures ranged as follows, as cor rected by John M. A Square Tip That the Allegheny City Postoffice Will Be LOCATED ON STOCKTON AVENUE. A Site Found Tbat Meets All the Require ments of the Government. THE 0FFR OF 0XB OWNER ACCEPTED It is generally known that the Govern ment has been dickering for some time for a site for a postoffice building in Allegheny City. Several locations have been talked of, and some examined, but objections of one kind or another were found to them and they were dropped. Some were too small and others too costly. One of tbe sites is on the corner of Ohio and "West Diamond streets, the owners being Mrs. Nettie Graham, A, D. Smith, Ben Franklin Insurance Company and W. 0. Bury. It fronts 120 feet on Ohio and rnns back about the fame distance. The only objection tbe Government had to it was the price, Jlr. Bury wanting 560,000 for his part alone. So, according to reliable in formation, it was abandoned. The next move was to a site at the corner of Stockton avenue and West Diamond street. The ground is owned by Joseph S. Brown, Mrs. Gregg and C. Yeager. It has a frontage of 120 feet on Stockton avenue by a depth of 210 on "West Diamond to Park way. Among other advantages claimed for this location over that on Ohio and West Diamond is a saving to the Government of from 5,000 to 10,000 in the delivery of the mails. It was learned yesterday from good authority tbat the Government has accepted Mr. Brown's valuation and that the offers of the other owners are receiving favorable consideration. Mr. Brown's price. It is understood, is 50,000. It is the Impression in the neighborhood that this site will be chosen, corroboration of which is found in the fact tbat values of contiguous property have been elevated considerably since negotiations began. The matter has been kept so qniet tbat it is known to a Very few, and this publication will be tbe first intimation to the public that such a deal is in progress. A prominent real estate broker from whom additional information was sought, said: "I bad an intimation of this more last Saturday when one of tbe owners of the Stockton ave nuo site withdrew an, option, saying he had been offered more money. If the postoffice shall be located there it will change tbe char acter of tbat part of the Northslde. It will be given over to business. In my judgment the Government coula not pick out a better loca tion for the postoffice." Business News and Goslp. Tbe prospect of tno hotels in Wilkinsburg was tbe leading topic of conversation In that borough yesterday. Tbe demand for property In the East End Is largely centered on the paved streets, tbat on unpaved streets being neglected. This is the direct result of tbe Supreme Conrt decision. Wholesale grocers are naturajly reluctant to buy mncb sugar, in view of the fact that it goes on the free list April J, when a reduction of 2c per pound will ensue. For the reason that sweetening is bound to be cheaper tbe.coming season than at any time in the history of the Irade, buyers are disposed to take hold spar ingly at this juncture. The rate for sugar tbe coming fruit season will be about 20 pounds forSL Work on the projected parochial school building in Allegheny, will begin as early in tbe spring as possible, so as to have it ready for oc enpancy by fall. There is talk of the Wilkinsburg Oil and Gas Company resuming work on their well on the Weyman farm. Some of the members think by going deeper they will find a good flow of gas. Baxter. Thompson fc Co. say easy money is already making a favorable impression on real estate, adding: "There is less difficulty in bringing sellers and buyers together than at rhe beginning of the year. Tho prospect for a good spring trade is very encouraging." 1L W. McKelry and John H. Gross have opened a stock exchange In the East End. The Pittsburg Insurance Company yesterday elected tbe follow lng officers: Charles Arbuth not, James Gordon, Alexander Bradley, James S. McCord, James. Collord, John Fullerton. James McCutcbeon, John Danb, R. J. Wilson, Henry Lloyd, Hillis McKown. K. E. Moore, John F. Scott and George P. Black. Business is picking up as fast as it went down, and will soon be up to the old level. There 13 no disputing what everybody says. J. K Glass reports a good inquiry for lots in his Allequlppa Place plan. Mr. A. GoeddeL formerly an East End dry goods merchant, has entered tbe ranks of the real estate dealer. He owns considerable property, and his business connections have placed a good amount of realty in his hands both for sale and rent. w Tbe Building Record. A Slight Reaction, but No Heavy Losses, Union Pacific Suffering Most Sugar and Lake Shore Are Higher Van- derbilts a Forenoon Feature. New York. Feb. 3. The stock market to day had somewhat of a reaction, though the movement was marked only in a few stocks, such as Union Pacific, Rock Island and Western Union, but the rest of tbe list presented a firm front during most of tbe time, and especially Wheeling and Lake Erie. Lake Shore, Michi gan Central and Pacific Mail. The strength of tbe first named is to be attributed to the an nouncement that Sidney Dillon had been elected a director of the company. The Gould stocks were also strong in tho early portion of tbe day, and the impression in the street is tbat Mr. Gould's trip over the Richmond Terminal as the guest of tbe President,; John H. Inman, is for the purpose of forming an alliance be tween tbe road and other Sonthern roads and the Missouri Pacific. Tbe stroug features of the day, however, were the Vanderbilts, and the impression that the insider- are buying is firmly rooted in the traders and habitues of tbe street, which lias tbe effect or causing those stocks to Ije tightly held, and Lake bbore to-day reached a point which was 1 per cent above Its best price ot last year. Michigan Central spurted up 3 per cent, retaining most of tbe advance, and Canada Southern showed a strong tone and more activity than usual of late. ' The Industrials, with tbe single exception of Chicago Gas, was strong to-day, the new Sugar stocks rising materially. The remainder of the market, however, was dull and sluggish throughout the day, and Loudon was a bayer to a limited extent in tbe early trading, and tbe other bullish influences named were more im portant than anything which could have an op Toite effect. The traders were inclined to the bear side, and after tbe first demand had been satisfied there was considerable pressure of short stocks from tbat element, and prices sagged through out the remainder of the day. The downward movement, however? was in no cae tpeciall) important outxide of Union Pacific and tbo corn roads. Rock Island was tbe leader among tbe group, but it failed to score a material loss for the day. Tbe trading was entirely devoid of special feature during the afternoon, with the excep tion of a sharp rise of 2 per cent in Tennessee Coal in the last few minutes. The market closed very dull aud heavy at small fractions under tbe opening prices in most cases. There were a few advance", however, and Sugar Receipts are up 1, and Lake Shore , wnlle the only important loss is VA in Union Pacific. Railroad bonds presented a firmer lrout than usual 6f late, and while tbe gains in tbo list were generally insignificant tbe movement was almost all in the upward direction, although the marked gains were not in tbe active issues. The total transactions reached 1.233,000 with out snecial animation in the market. Houston and Texas general receipts rose 2 to S3 The following table snows tnc prices of active stocks on the M ew York Stock Exchange vester day. COtS C0HFOBT DEPOSITORS. New Creditors of Banker Kean Fall to Se cure Preferences Asked For. Chicago, Feb. 3. Judge Scales this morning rendered bis decision on the petition of certain depositors in the insolvent bank of S. A. Eean & Co. to be made preferred creditors on the ground that they bad made their deposits within 30 days of the failure, during which time it was alleged Mr. Kean knew himself to be in solvent. The judge decided against tbe peti tioners on the ground tbat the voluntary as signment law of tbe State precludes prefer ences. An appeal was taken. Judge Scales added, however, tbat, while the petitioners could not be admitted as preferred creditors under the assignment law, they were entitled, in a suit at law, to recover the amount of their deposits in case they show they bad been induced to part witb their property through fraud: tbat all such claimants were entitled to relief to the ex. elusion, of contract creditors, though there could not bo any preferences among persons so defrauded, but they must share the assets pro rata. WINTER WISDOM. fzchanpe. Don't be afraid of fresh air, but avoid draughts. Don't go out of doors for a second without extgi covering. In selecting your winter underclothing choose that which is warm and yet more or less open in texture. Take off your overcoat when yon enter a warm place, whether office or private dwelling, even if your visit Is to last only three minutes. If you catch cold or develop a cough, get rid of it at once. This is better than feeling "blue" and thinking tbat pneumonia or consumption has marked you as a victim. The best remedy for a cough or cold (how ever stubborn), or a sudden chill, is pure whis key. A dose of whiskey in water will Impart a generous warmth to tbe whole body and keep off tbe diseases of tbe season. Don't forget that only pure whiskey should be taken. Duffy's Pure Malt whiskey has the strongest recommendations from the leading doctors as to its efficiency, and from tbe most prominent scientists as to its purity.. It is the only standard medicinal whiskey. Take no other from your druggist. w StOP tlCLELt Chronic Cough Now: For If vnn Ae nn 1 m.w ),..... .. sumptlve.
