Quality of Cattfo Received at East Liberty Stock Yards PALLS BELOW RECE5T AVERAGE, J5nt Markets AVere Steady to Stronjr at Trices of a Week Afro. SHEEP ASD BTYIXE TENDING HIGHER OFFICE OF PITTSBURG DISPATCH, Wednesday. Jan. 7. ( Receipts of cattle at East Liberty Stock Yards hare Tanel very little for the past three weeks. The total this week was about 80 carloads. Quality of this week's offerings was searcily up to that of last week. The holiday trade calls for beeves of extra quality ia competi tion with poultry, aud hence offerings of the past week or two have been above average in quality. The week's offerings have shown a decline in quality, but in spite of this markets were steady. Prime heavy beeves were a shade weaker this week than last There was a larger per cent of light butcher cattle than usual on the market, and prices of last week were lolly maintained. Tliei e is no call for feeders, and, while Mockers arc in fair demand, supply is licht Tbe high est price pai J for beeves this week was $4 93. Com sand calves were scarce and linn. Veal calves were in good demand at a range of 6c to 7c per pound, an advance of 3-jC on last week's prices. Supply ot good freslitows. w.-nnot up in demand and range o prices was JiitoHo. Fur the lirst time in many weeks tbe demand for cattle on tbe local market was above sup pi vand the pens were cleaned up early at prices quoted. lliere were no beeves shipped on in fir! bands this week, a fact which breaks the record lor seteral months past, Supply of cattle for local trade has been uniformly above demand for several months nau This week demand has been above supply on desirable grades. Markets opened strong on Monday and prices were 15c to 25c per en t. highor than la-t week. Tho top price of sheep was 5c and lambs CjS per pound. Wheat Encounters a Snag tn the Shape of I-arge Pacific Stocks Corn and Oats Gain Ground Provisions "Weak nnd Lower. CHICAGO Wheat was firmer at the opening this morning than It closed on Tuesday after noon and the change was rather unaccount able. May wheat opened at 97c bid, with very little for sale at that price. ind trading almost at the same instant at 97Xc The operators In the pit when asked for an explanation of the change which bad come over their spirits accribed it shortly to strong cables. As the cables were not strong other causes must have been operative, and some of them pointed to the smaller local recblpts. Even the latter reason, however, was Insufficient to account for an advance of J-Jc per bushel In a few minutes, and.thereforr.it maybe assumed lhat some heavy shorts had concluded to cover their lines, for the advance was assuredly not the result of anv heavy buying for long arcount. The prices kept well nu for a time around 97Kc. touching 97S97Jc on two occasions, but in the last half tbn market weakened and sold down rather rapidlv in the end to9o7c. and closed at that bid. The straw that broke the back ot tho market was BraditreeV fig ures, showing tbe Pacific stock 1 to he 12,944,000 bushels this week, compired with 11.200,000 bushels of the w eek previous. The corn market opened strong on small re ceipts. This caused prices to start at an ad vance of H&ic, the first sales beinc at from 52;53c. There was trading at 53c for a short time, but as the call price was 53c, selling against those privileges caused a reaction to 52Jic Tho principal business of the dav was done between 52c and 53c, with one dip to 5?K"2c The closing prices for May were 52j53c which is JiSJgC advance upon yes terday's final prices Thero was a fair trade In oats, the market working steady and showing only fluctuation in the active future. May sold on the opening at 45jc, the market on tho close indicating c ad vance for the day. Ihe provision market opened weak and a shade lower on the heavy receipts of hogs and the loner prices reported for them from the yards. Some of the strength which was de veloped later camo from the firmer tone to tbe corn marker, and some was due to purchases by Armour and other packers who are natu rally indisposed to see their present magnificent manufacturing profits diminish for the want of a little Judiciuus support. May perk opened at 11 25, ranccd from Sll 20 to $11 45 and closed at 11 05. Lard opened 2c loner than it closed yesterday, but recovered the decline and closed unchanged for May. One of tho Hotel Syndicates Makes a Good Strike Down Town. OPTION ON VALUABLE PROPERTY. Practical Suggestion for One of the En trances to Schenley Park. THE HEWS AXD GOSSIP OP THE CITI It vrsi reported yesterday on tcood author ity that of a prominent pork packer that an option has been secured by one of the hotel syndicates on 200 feet of ground on the northwest corner of Liberty and Sixth streets for a first-class hostelrie. The bulk of thfs property is owned by the Smith heirs. Other owners are James McCoy, Ed Simp son, Samuel Morrison, Mrs. Hattrick and Mrs. Culbertson. An attempt was made to get the inside facts of the nutter, but all the individuals supposed to be connected with the project who wero seen declihed to say anything for publication. There is nothing improbable in the story however, as it Is well known that at least two syndicates are looking for hctel sites. tr W Useful and Ornamental, Tho following communication on a subject suggested by The Dispatch, Is of general in terest: To the Financial Editor of The Dispatch: I hear some talk of putting up handsome en trance gates at Scbenley Park. Letme makea suggestion to the quarrymen, stone cutters and building contractors, that they combine to put up two handsome pillars, or pillars and a stone arch, each separate stone to be a specimen of the different stone used in this district for building purposes. The base should be of the famous Beaver county stone so much used for heavy foundation, the granites and stone of different shades to be blended in an artistic manner. The quality of each stono should be designated by letters cut in it, so that contract ors and architects in talking aboqt different material for building residences could take their clients out to the park gate and show the shade of stone or granite. The cntranco gate of a public park in Edin burgh, Scotland, the handsomest gate to the park, was in this way permanently decorated. Of course the plan must be prepared by an architect. Each one of the quarry owners should send the stone in the rough of the proper size required. The stonecutters in tbe. city would then cut it and the builders put it in place, all free ot charire. We cmld thus have a beautiful entrance lhat would look well and be of some use, both tn ceologists and the building public JAMES D. Glover. Forced to Enlarge. The interior of tbe Mellon Bank building, on Smlthfield street, is being remodeled to accom modate growing business. The part now oc cupied by an insurance company will be taken in, almost doubling the floor, and devoted to banking purposes. The improvements will be handsome and permanent, and cost as much as any ordinary building. Progress of this kind indicates confidence in the future. w Business News and Gossip. Shares Still on the Upward Trend, but Im peded by Selling for Short Interest Less Activity In Railroad Bonds Silver Agitation. New York, Jan. 7. Tho stock market to-day was strong throughout, with a decided increase in orders executed by commission" houses. Time money loaned at 5 per cent, and on the whole the outlook for the continuance of tbe upward movement is very tavorable. The feature of the market to-day, however, was tbe change in front, apparent or real, of foreigners, and where they have been sellers of stocks steadily for the past four or five days there was to-day an effort to get back those stocks with out advancing prices. Tbe announcement that tbe Louisville and Nashville bad declared a dividend, and that it was 2 per cent In cash, bad a most salutary effect upon that stock in tbe early trading, making it tbe leature of the dealings through out the forenoon. There were sales of it by German houses, however, and the traders were bcarisbly Inclined still, and some vigorous ef forts were made at times to get certain stocks down. The bearish fraternity wero also mnch concerned over the possibility of a meeting to morrow, but the cencral public, which is now in the market to a limited extent, showed no apprehension bnt that everything would pro ceed as smoothly as may be desired. The pressure of short stocks upn tho mar ket prevented anv material advance, in tbe gen eral list and gave the market a feverish tone which lasted throuchont the entire session. A strong undertone, however, asserted itself, and little or no impression was made upon the list LnuirVilIo and Nashville had a spurt of activity and strength In the early trading, and.was fol lowed later by Pacific Mail. Sugar Refineries also displayed marked strength, winch was found to be due to the covering of a large short line in tbe stock. Jeisey Central also made a sharp upward spurt in the later dealings, but lost a portion of the improvement in the final transactions. The market, If anything, was narrower than that of vesterday, the bulk of the trading being confined moro than usually to the leading shares. The best prices were reached before 2 r. Jr.. and while some reaction was seen from tbe hlcbest points, tbe closo was quiet and firm. Tbe final changes are generally frac tional gilns, but tho early ones of Importance were advances of 1 per cent each in Louisville, Union Pacific and Wheeling and Lake Erie preferred, while Jersey Central is up 3 per cent Railroad bonds were not quite so active as yesterday, the sales reaching 2,197.000. but tbe samo strength was displayed, and must of the final changes aro in the direction of higher price", with a few losses here and there. The active issues were again Atchison incomes aud Northern Pacific 5. The J'ost says: Rock Island was heavll v sold short again, both yesterday and to-day, and the outstanding short interests became so large that before 2 o'clock the bears became uueasv and put it up 1 per cent on themselves in about an hour in their attempts tn cover. There is good reason to believe that activity and the advance in stocks were checked to a considerable extent, both yester day and to-day, by the revival of the talk about silver legislation. It is not so much that speculators believe there will actually be any further silver legislation as they do that the agitation of the subject will set some peo ple boarding gold acain, and so have an effect on the money market At any rate, there is still an active bear party in tne stocK market who are encouraged by it and make i: a factor in "peculation. DOMESTIC MARKETS. OFFICE OF PITTSBURG DISPATCH, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1691. 1 Country Produce Jobbing Prices. Wild, wintry weather for tbe past few days has proved adverse to trade. Potatoes are firm and fancy stock readily brings outside quota tions. Demand for apples i3 slow, and markets aro weak. When apples are about as high as oranges, as tbey have been for a f ew w eeks past, the latter take tho preference. Creamery and country butter are weak, and prices are a shade lower. Since tbe courts of Pennsylvania have decided m favor of oleo. demand for tho latter has improved at the expense of genuine stuff. Fresh nearby eggs are in short supply. Western stock is firm and tendency of prices is upward, a fact attributable to cold weather. Chicago prices are up to 22c per dozen, and this means 25c per dozen at this market Tropical fruits are in good demand and tendency of prices is upward all along tho line. APPLES 85 0005 50 a barrel.
