V V F"-l THE WEEK OEPKAYBR Its Celebration Begun at the Vari ous Churches, Yesterday. DEDICATION OP A NEW BUILDIXG. Cnmbsrland Presljterians Hold Services in Their Clinrch. DIGESTS OP KUMEROUS DISCODESES The Shady Arenue Cumberland Presby terian Church, East End. was dedicated yesterday morning with appropriate cere raonies. - ""The'ehurch appears, from the outside, to be a refy small one, as the amount of terri tory on which the pretty little edifice was erected is limited. But every advantage was tafcen so that now the auditorium will seat about 600 or 700 people. It is so con structed that the church and Sunday-school rooms can be thrown together. The audi torium is seated with opera chairs and the Sunday-school room with movable chairs. The furnishings and architecture of the church is Tery pretty. Above the center is an immense dome so constructed as to add greatly to the light of the church. In the afieruoon a union service was held, in which all the ministers in the East End were invited to tate part, and the majority or them accepted the invitation to at least lend tneir presence. After Eev. Mr. Morris led in prayer. lr. Chalfant, of the East End M. E. Church, made the first address in the alternoon. He was there to rejoice at the success ot the enterprise which auds an other agency of currying on the workings of the gospel in the East End. S.TILL A -WANT OF CHUKCHES. He declared that that section of the city is not even fairly supplied with churches. Dr. Chalfant then took up the Question of sectarianism and declared that the day is past when any man would declare that he "would rather commune with the devil than a Cumberland Presbyterian." Itev. Dr. Stanton, ot the Shady Avenue Baptist Church, declared that he was glad to be there. "I have been looking around," siA he. "and I can sec hut two things needed to make this a first class Baptist Church. The collection boxes should have looser handles and what an elegant Bap tistry that dome would make if it were only inverted. The Cumberland Presbyterians were lormed by a little salt of Armenianism lcaveninc the Calvanism in Cumberland county, Tenu. At last it reached out as far as the East End ot Pittsburg, which is as near heaven as can be reached in this world. Now, to continue this evolution of religion, to make a Baptist all we would have to do is to convert them into the Congregational, iorni a church government and then soak them thoroughly in that inverted dome." The pastor here suggested that it wouid rather be a little church revolution. Dr. Stanton continued by showing that the churches are very closely cemented, and doing even better wort than if they were united under one head. His entire address was eloquent and interesting. A YEKY YOUXG CHUECH. Eev. Dr. "Wilson in his address made a briel mention of the history of the chnrcli. (Three or four years ago the church occupied a little room on Frankstown avenue, but I finding it necessary to secure more com- t modious quarters, secured the let and built the church just dedicated. He said that more churches are needed in the East End. In all the churches, both Catholic and Protestant, the seating capacity is not over 10,000, while that section of city the has a pojiuLition of 40,000. Dr. Wilson then took np the subject of church sustenance, and slid: "Pittsburg has a very public spirited citizen who now makes his borne in New York. He has made him self famous by building immense libraries in Pittsburg, 'Allegheny and Braddock. Ilecently a minister asked him for a sub scription to assist in building a Methodist church in Braddock, and he replied: 'I don't give to churches." 'Nor would 1, retorted the minister. 'If I wer-i in your place I'd do all I could to destroy th'em.' 'Not that,' replied the philanthropist. 'Ihey are all right enough, but 1 don't give mr money that war." They are all glad enough for the civilizing influence of the church, but verv lew like to help supuort them." Following Dr. "Wilson, Itev. Dr. Butler, of the Christian Church, made an address, and the exercises were closed by an address by Eev. De "Witt M. Benliam. THE PAGANS OF PITTSBUEG. Itev. Dr. Townsentl's Sermon on the Ques tion, "Why Any Religion? Eev. Dr. J. G. Townsend, of the Uni tarian Church, in his sermon of yesterday, said: "There is an army of Pagans in this most Christian city of Christendom. How many among editors, lawyers, doctors, busi ness men aud others discredit not only or thodoxy, but all religion. "Why any reli gion? they say. They discredit religion because it has been the agent of ruin and cruelty in the past, because it sprang out of native worship and fetichism; because it has been kept alive by the priests, and because it asks questions that can nevjr be an swered. In resjiect to the first charce, even Dr. Hedge admits its truth, and says that 'a sentence in the, "boot of Exodus has been a death sentence to millions of hopeless women.' But on the otner side it is indisputable that religion has been the inspiration of the noblest souls, the pathtnaEers of the race, meu who made the desert places of life blos som; religion has made the great books, the Bibles of mankind. Her aspirations have been the themes of the subliinest music, the subjects of the divinest painting. She has added to the purity aud kindness of the world. "It is true that religion had a lowly origin, but does the Bartlett pear taste less luscious because it sprang from the wild thorn of the hedge, or the steamship seem less grand be cause it sprang from thedug-outot the savage? It is nonsense to suppose that the priests in vented religion; did meu invent music, painting or poetry? Men sang because they had the musical enthusiasm, and painted because the spirit of beauty came upon them, and men prayed, worshiped because they had the religious passion. Religion is in and of humanity, the one unescapable thing. "Why any religion? "Why, we cannot free ourselves Irom it. Banish all religious, and religion will remain. "It is hard to define religion, when men counted infidels, like Spinoza of the past, and Felix Adler aud "W. M. Salter of the present, are the most religious of men. But my oei-mtion of religion is the sense of the Infinite in us, the passion for the perfect. "We Should cultivate religion, because reli gion gives us our firmest grip of material things. The larger the spirituality, the more masterv of the lower things of life. How many men have failed because they ceased to expand themselves in soull Eelf. gion helps us in the temptations that come to us all. Beligion gives us the sense of companionship in our solitude and quickens the sense ot brotherhood. Do not, then, give up the quest lor ideal truth. Let these thoughts come to you not bounded by any shores or skies. Bcreligious, for religion is the golden chain that binds the heart of man lo his brother and to God." A "WEEK OF P2AYEB. The rtrst Christian Church, Allegheny, Preparing for a Revival. "V The Eev. W. F. Eichardson preached last night at the First Christian Church, Mont gomery avenue aud Arch street, Allegheny." His subject was "The Good Confession." The sermon was sjmply a preparatory one to the. commencement of the week of prayer,, 4& which begins in that .church to-morrow nicht To-night will be held the annual meeting of the church, at which all the society con nected with that congregation will report. On Tuesday evening the week of prayer will commence, at which J". J. . Spencer, an evangelist of national fame, will assist the pastor. GOD'S "WONDEEFtJL GOODNESS. Beautiful Communion Service Held at the rirst Congregational Church, Allegheny. Communion services were held yesterday morning at the First Congregational Church, Manhattan street, Allegheny, by Eev. S. "W. McCorkle, and five new members were received into the church. The text of his sermon was: "How great is the goodness which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee." In opening the pastor said: "God does not give everything out at once. 2s o mat ter how much is given out at any time he still has an inexhaustible fullness of good ness in reserve. This is manifest in the creation of the world -and its preparation with a. view to man's becoming its inhabi tant. His every want is supplied from the wealth or minerals and. the golden secrets bidden away in herbs, fruits and cereals, and yet there is no apparent diminution of the supply. This truth is also shown in God's con versant love which flows in unending quan tities from the Trinity, aud also in the in carnation, sufferings and death of Christ. There is, moreover, an emphasis in thewords laid up for they mean hidden treasures stored away. This is illustrated in the manner in which nature meets every emergency. A great motive power was needed, and nature gave steam; the world demanded faster methods of transmitting intelligence, and nature gave electricity. It is so with God's goodness in grace which always comes to the rescue of a church or an individual that is in need. "We do not know the extent of God's grace until an emergency arises call ing it lortb. This goodness in reserve is the churches, hope for the evangelization of the world. "The text refers directly," Mr. McCorkle continued, "to tho goodness laid up in Heaven, and with the despair at leaving the world comes richness of God's goodness never known betore." PE0PEB DIVISION OF TIME. Dr. Forres Not an Admirer of New Tear and Its Customs. Eev. George T. Purves, D. D., preached in the First Presbyterian Church last even ing:, taking for his text Second Peter, iii, 8: "One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." Dr. Purves pointed out that the world had just crossed an imaginary line, that dividing two years. As a matter of lact, the year was a mere artificial division of time. New Year's Day might as well be in July as in January. Time should be measured by epochs alone. There were long seasons in which no great events occurred, and again there were a few short years, such as those ol Christ's life, which teemed with importance. It was the same with the life of man. It had its epochs of good and bad. sorrow and joy. During the coming year, men should try and create for themselves epochs of great good and happiness. This they could do by God's grace and their own endeavors. TEASE AND FSOFIT The Subject of Itev. Dr. Sutherland's Ser mon Last Evening. At the Second Presbyterian Church, last evening, Eev. J. E. Sutherland, D. D., preached on "Trade and Profit," taking for his text Mark, viii., 2-6: "For what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world, if he lose his own soul?" Dr. Sutherland dwelt upon the usclessDessof earthly happiness, and the only true and lasting joy of heaven. He pointed out bow little benefit it did the Cnristless millionaire before the judgment seat, that people spoke with re spect and admiration or his lite. " We were all traders, and we each had two stores. There was the vast mart of the soul, and the petty littl huckster shop of the body. Yet some men neglected the great concern and gave up all their time to the small shop. Heaven was for God's'lriends alone, and God did not pick his friends from among those who repaid his benefits with neglect and contumely. MINISTERS IN POLITICS. A Trno Beligion Does Not Prohibit the Ex ercise of Civil Bights. "A minister, of all things, ought to be a politician, in the proper seusenf the word," said Eev. "W. S. "Williams during his ser mon at the Christ TJnivcrsalist Church last evening. "It is every man's privilege to stand up for what he thinks is right. Sev eral young clergymen kicked over the traces recently. They saw something wrong in a doctrine which was un-Americau and for bade them from voting. "A religion which prohibits the exercise of a civil right is not a true religion." That backing cough can be so quickly cured by fcilnloh's Cure We guarantee it Bold by Jos.
