OLID FOR CAMERON. llcglieny County's Legislative Dele gation Holding Ko Caucuses S THE SUBJECT OP A SPEAKER. E. Stewart, Esq., in the TIM as a Can didate for the Tlace. JOH FOE EDOOKS OF PHILADELPHIA Samuel E. Stewart. Esq., of Verona bor tgh, whose law office is on Fiith avenue, is city, has announced himself a candi ite for Speaker ot tbc House of Rcpresent ires in Harrishurg this scssiou. This is 31 r. Stewart's third term in the wer branch of the Legislature, to which i was first elected in 1SSC. He lias the putation of being a faithful and capable aseniblyman. and is popular at the State ipital. He is a well-known member of the llegheny county bar. He is yet young, tviug been born in Allegheny June SO, w6. He spent his youth on his lather's rni, up the Allegheny river. In 1879 he a'iuatcd from 'Washington and Jeflcrson ollegc, ami, coming to Pittsburg, read law iih Major It. E. Stewart, being admitted thebariulSSO. .Little more than two weeks now remain efore the State Legislature convenes, and le Allegheny county members have not yet ecided who they will jointly support for peaker of the House of Representatives, he delegation from Philadelphia has held caucus and formally promised Mr. Brooks, f that city, its entire vote. The Allegheny Duuty delegation also usually holds a cau us at home before going to Harrisburg, hut . is quite probable that this year will be an xceptinn. NOT YET CALLED TO CAUCUS. Xo call has thus far been issued or a iceting of the Pittsburg and Allegheny oucty members to act upon the Speaker hip. The members Irom this county could not e bound togetuer, in advance ot the gathering f the Lecislature. to vote for Mr. Brooks be aue several of them are not triendlv to him. o that a caucus in his behalf would houseless. As for the other candidates for the position, ot enough interest is being taken here to iaVe any effort to combine on any one of them. ill of the members have received visits or per onal letters from the various candidates, so lemn: their influence and votes. All of these ave friends among the Allegheny county rcp ecntative. In Ins canvass of the home members, a Dis ATCII reporter heard Mr. Finley, of Washing on count; Caleb C. Thompson, of Warren onnty, and Thomas H. Capp. of Lebanon ounty, all of whom are candidates, favorably poken of. Six ot the Allegheny county mem ers replied almost in the same language, Mheu iked about the Brooks boom. They said: There is better material in the House than Ir. Brooks." Yet all admitted that the noise f his canvass thns far indicates that he -nlll -ome before the Hocse next month as perhaps .he leading candidate. Manv ot the home members said that Mr. Steuart should bo given the whole vote of Al 'egheny countv as a recognition of a Pittsburg candidate. They thought that even if he does not stand vt ell front in the race, as far as the whole State is concerned, this complimentary vote could be given him on the first ballot at least. But, on the whole, most ot the members who were interviewed wished to be left free-footed to decide for themselves when they reach Harrisburg and see how the various candidates ire running. SOLID FOR DON CAMEEON. Nor is it the desire ot tho political leaders to have a caucus in Pittsburg. They want to hold the vote of the Allegheny connty delega tion for Speaker, free to swing at will so as to win the best vautage ground for the more im portant political battle the election of a United States Senator. The Allegheny connty delegation as a whole will vote for the candi date for Sneaker who is most advantageous to the friends of Don Cameron, be he Brooks or not; and as Cameron will be reelected, the Allegheny county bojs will bo on the winning side in the Speakership question also. D. It. Jones. Eeq. another Pittsburg lawyer who is a member of the Legislature, takes high l rounds in bis choice of a SDeaker of the House. He says; "Until I get to Harrisburg 1 cannot decide for whom I will vote. No caucus could bind me. I think a Speaker should be elected who would be absolutely in dependent who would no: be tho tool of politicians in tbc organization ot the Assembly. 1 mean, a man who could not be influenced in tne appointment of standing committees: ubo would nut on the Appropriations Committee men who are known for retrenchment and re form: who would appoint on the Corporations Committee men who are anti-corporationists, and who would appoint on the Judiciary General Committee a few men who are not actornevs. It is the custom to make up this latter committee entirely of law yers, nut I think there should be men on it from other walks of life, such as farmers arti sans and business men. so that we could get a common sense law occasionally.'" Inasmuch as the heads f committees is one of the chief source of Influence in the hands of the Speaker, and as the Speaker's election Is invariably secured by the promise before hand of those appointments other members think that Mr. Jones will not have the oppor tunity this year to vote for a man after his own heart or for a good many years to come. Dewey, a silver miner, of Silvwr City, Idaho, is at the Anderson., In a chat yesterday he threw out the impression that he was in Pittsburg to float mining stocks. He is inter ested in six silver mines. Sir. Dewey says the advance in price has helped the business, and the production has increased 100 per cent. In Idaho labor is receiving SI to J4 50 per day, and the Territorv is enjoying a boom at present. Mr. Dewey thinks that the Government should coin no more gold or silver, as too much of it is lost in transportation and various other ways, and has to be redeemed. He believes in keeping it in the Treasury and issuing certifi cates for it. ACT0BS AT THE HOTELS, 3Ir. Barrett is Feeling Well But is Look ing Much Older. The actors to appear in Pittsburg this week are scatteredamong the different hotels. Law rence Barrett Is at the Monongahela House; Elsie Leslie and her mother are at the Schlosser, and Maggie Mitchell and her husband are stop ping at the Anderson. Jlr. Barrett arrived on the limited last even ing. He encased himself in a nig overcoat and in another figurative one of substantial dignity. He bears an ugly mark on his neck where the incision was made a year ago to relieve tho swollen glands. His last illness has not added anything to the youthfulness of his appear ance.
