WOBK FOR THE COURT Interesting Developments at the Wholesalers' Hearings. TWEKTT-OKE CASES YESTERDAY. A Transfer of License Made Without the Conn's Consent. KOW THE LTJDENCE WAS ALL OBTAINED Xesicrday was strictly wholesalers' day at the Twenty-eighth ward police station on tbeSouthsidc. Ten cases for selling liquor without license and sir cases for violating the hquor laws were called for a bearing by Alderman Succop. The hearings were held in Inspector McKelvy's office, which was crowded by the prisoners, bondsmen, witnesses and friends of those interested. Prom the first it looked as though there was to be some fun before the last case was through with, and so it turned out. There was also a number of surprises which places a new phase on some of the proceeding, both as to the manner in which some whole sale houses arc carried on and the manner of collecting evidence. Everything went off like clockwork. In spector JlclCelvy sat at the right of Judge Succop and acted as prosecuting attorney, lie had a list of typewritten questions for the witnesses to be called, and other data for each case. Officers Fauucy, Conley, Clin ton, Shook and Gribben acted as detectives in working up inost or the cases. DltlXKS AT THE CITY'S EXrENSE. The officers purchased half pints or whisky in nearly all the houses, besides getting drinks by the glass and bottles of beer. Captain Stewart had charge ot the side board, and Drought out the labeled bottles when he was called. .The sensation of the afternoon was devel oped when John Peebles case was called. The latter's place i at 2vo. 750 AVest Carson street. Officers ThomDson, Clinton, Fan ner and Conley were sworn and testified that on Xo-v ember 14 they had bought three bottles of beer and a pint of whisky in the place, which they drank in the back room. There were 1C others drinking in the room. The liquor was bought of "William Amend. "When Peebles was put under oath he said that he had nothing to do with the matter and that Amend was responsible for selling the liquor. McKelvy inquired how that was, as the licence was made out in his name. Peebles then said he got the license, but Amend has been running the place. He had intended all along to transfer the license to Amend and on November 1 Amend drew up the papers to that effect and was to pav Peebles $200 and had paid $70 of that amount. They had not gone to court to make thp transfer but fixed the matter up among themselves. A LITTLE SUEPKISE PAHTT. When Peebles got through with his testi mony Amend was called, and said he had been running the place since May. The In spector quietly turned to Lieutenant Booker and said: "Please read that warrant to Mr. Amend." Before Amend was aware of what was going on the warrant prepared lor the event vas read to h,im, and he was under ar rest, and had a hearing immediately. Both he ar.d Peebles were held for court in 5500 bail each. Some further developments are expected when the case goes to court. Inspector Mc Kelvy said afterward that there are numbers of cases where license has been got by one man who never intended to go into the busi ness and the court should take hold of the matter. "When Patrick Lyon's case was called, the witness swore that he had bought whisky and beer and drank it id the place. The tell-tale half-pint bottle was trotted out, when Lyon txcl3imed. "Oh, I never put labels on my bottles." His merriment soon changed to cnagrin as it was explained who put the labels on, and he was keld for court in the twinkling of an eye. Kirk Q. Bigham was on hand to defend I"red J?uch of Boggs avenue. Tlie wit nesses testified to buying beer in the place and drinking it on the premises. Mr. Big ham inquired how they knew it was Fuchs place, and the answer was given that a man comiugoutof the place had told them so. Big ham argued that the evidence on this point was not clear, and at last the case was post poned until Friday at i r. ai. Inspector McKelvv immediately had subpoenas made out for eight more witnesses in the case. DIDN'T E.01 WHAT STRUCK 'EST. Louis Bender, SOI Carson street, and "William "Ward, 313 Carson street, were con fronted with tales of liquor bought in their places and were immediately held for court. Bernard McGumness, "West Carson street, was also held for court, as was Jami"i Donehue of 1413 Carson street. Officer Gribben. one of the witnesses in the latter case, made the start ling statement that he did not know where Donehue's house is and was never in the place, -tlthough Officer Fanney was just as sure he had seen Gribben in the plact. The Inspector only smiled and developments may be expected later. John Swartz, 1-9 Seventeenth street, had nothing to say when his case was called and was held for court along with the others. Bx-Alderman John Lohrman was called awav from town bv sickness and his hear ing was postponed until to-morrow afternoon. The following cases were also postponed until to-morrow on different excuses: v Uliam i'adden, ic lor Doesch. "William Cramer, Henrv Ober helnian, Hcnrv Obernour, Trapn. The In spectors did not object to the postponement as long as the excuses were legal and when the hearings were over were well satisfied with the result. At the hearing in the liquor cases in the first district yesterday morning James Powers, of 75 Sixth avenue; Leopold Brown, of 225 "Webster avenue; George Gotthart, of 4U7 Fifth avenue, and G H. Neeley, of No. 1 Sixth street. John Drew, nf Ko. 4 Grant street, was discharged be cause the license was taken out in another name. BENNETT AT MONMOUTH JUNCTION. Polled Off the Pennsylvania Tracks a Few Seconds Before an Express Dashed By frightened by the Calls of a Railroad 3Ian. Mrs, H. M. Bennett, of this city, had a very narrow escape from death several days ago at Monmouth Junction, X. J. It hap pened in a very peculiar manner, and Mr. Bennett says it was the closest call he ever saw. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett have a country scat near there, and they came to the depot to take a train for Pittsburg to be here, for Thanksgiving. The Pennsylvania road has four tracks at this point, anil trains are pass ing most ot the time making it exceedingly dangerous for pedestrians. "What is known as the Congiegational express, which docs not stop, was due, and Mr. Bennett saw it approaching, but there was plenty of time to cross over. He started across the tracks accompanied bv Mrs, Bennett when a track-walker called her attention to the express, and waved his hand in the direction of the train. It frightened Mrs. Bennett, and she fell on the track in adead faint in front of the train. There was no time to lose, and Mr. Ben nett aud the railroad men, realizing her po sition, rushed to her side and puiled her off but a lew seconds before the express passed by. Mr. Bennett said he wasn't frightened, but it is one of the peculiar things he can't explain. Mrs. Bennett is a large woman, and her dress caught on a spike and was torn, but she didn't realize what an escape she had until she was restored to conscious ness. , The coming train and the calls of the rail road man were too much for her nerves, and she was rendered helpless in her perilous position. She was not injured Dy her fall on the ballast. COHFJDEHT OF 18D2. One Democrat "Who Tlilnks Cleveland "Will Sweep the Country. Congressmen Mansur and Hurd, two of the Missouri Democratic Representatives who received another lease of life, passed through the city last evening bound for Washington, to be ready for the opening of the House. Mr. Mansur is big and fat, and it is plain to be seen his success has made him a little arrogant. "The people in this election," he said, "have set the pace for 1892. Cleveland will be nominated, and he will sweep the coun try. The voters are tired of high duties and prices. During the next three months Sneaker Reed will be conspicuous by his absence lrom the House. He went up like a rocket, but has come down like a sticK." Congressman Hurd had little to say, but with other Democrats he declares the McKinley bill was responsible for the result. TEAMPS IN THE CITIES, But They Steer for Coke Ovens "When Cold Weather Sets In. "This is the time of the year when the tramp steers for the large cities, where he revels in wnat he can get during the holi days," said Special Agent Hampton Houghton, of the Pennsylvania road, at the Union depot yesterday. "We haven't been bothered much with them on the railroad lately, but as soon as the cold weather sets in they will be found back again in their old haunts around the ovens in the coke regions. Go aronnd the ovens any time and you are sure to stir up a nest of a half dozen or more playing cards and enjoying themselves. They rob spring houses for a living, and they are the bane and pest of the farmers." WEST OVER THE LIST. Tho Charity Committee Beady to Slake Its Recommendations. Cadwalader Biddle, Secretary of the Board of Charities, and Dr. W. C. O'Neale, of Gettysburg, a member of the board, re turned home last evening. The committee went over the requests from the various charitable institutions for State aid in Western Pennsylvania, and deter mined what they would recommend in each case, but the report will first be submitted to the full board before it will be made public Superintendent Quay, of the Morganza lie form School, appeared before the board and explained what he intended to do with his appropriation if he got it. Mr. Biddle refused last evening to furnish any figures. NEW OFFICIAL FLAGS. Too Large Ensigns Sent to Postmaster Mc Kcan From AVashington. Postmaster McKean yesterday received from the Treasury Department two new flags which are to be hung from the Govern ment building. One is a revenue ensign 714x12 feet It is the first time a flag of this kind has been pnt up in Pittsburg. Its stripes are reversed, running up and down, and in the corner is an eagle surrounded by 13 stars. This flag was hoisted yesterday. It will be run up at snnrisc and down at sunset The other flag is the national en sign 10x19 feet It will be hoisted as soon as a pole is obtained. The revenue ensign belongs to the Revenue Department and the national en sign to the Postoffice Department INSPECTING THE LAKE ESIE. W. K. Vanderbilt and Tarty Go Over the Pecmlckey Road. W. IC Vanderbilt, President John Newell and a party of New York men made an in spection of the Lake Erie and Peemickey roads yesterday. E0WDIES ANNOY A CONGREGATION. Chief Brown Will See That Sufficient Police Protection Is rornished. The Rev. Mr. Tvler, pastor of the Primi tive Methodist Church, on Home street, near Fifty-second street, called at Chief Brown's office yesterday afternoon and asked for police protection for the church. He said that whenever they hold services rowdies from the lower end of the ward congregated about and disturbed and annoyed them.
