PITTSBURG A LEADER. Local Blast Furnaces Hare an Average Weekly Capacity of MORE THAN TEN THOUSAND TOKS. The General Grievance Committee Finds Some 'ew Complaints. ANOTHER FURNACE BLOWS IN AT ETNA A comparison of the condition of the blast furnaces of the country for the last month puts Pittsburg in the lead by an average weekly output of OTer 10,000 tons. These furnaces use charcoal, anthracite and cote, and of the charcoal furnaces there are more in blast than at any time -within the past year, while their capacity is said to be' ahead of anything reported in the last two years. In the charcoal list there have been no changes in Pittsburg, while with the anthra cite iurnaces, the Pennsylvania Steel Com pany's Spiegel furnace has resumed the making of iron, and the St. Charles No. 2 has been finally abandoned. Among those using coke in this district, all of the furnaces in the Edgar Thomson plant are in blast; one of the Isabella furnaces has been blown out to be relined, and No. 3 was blown in yesterday. Soho went out last Friday. Of the total weekly capacity of 124,059 tons in all the furnaces, Pittsburg turns out as her share 25,125, or more than one-fifth of all other furnaces in the United Statc. Dur ing the last month five furnaces have been added, with a total increase in capacity of 3,072 tons. Pittsburg has IS furnaces m blast and lour out of blast. These latter have a weekly capacity or 4.2S0 tons. In this connection it may be noted that a number or the furnacemen are complaining about the stiff rtrice asked for coke Ir SAl!in- tor $2:15, a rate" winch it has maintained for the last five or six months, and as tbo prices have beeu fixed for November, there will not likely lie any change for two or tliree weeks. Fur nactinen arzue that they cannot see the pro priety of holding up prices on the basis of $20 to J21 me iron, when the price of the latter has dropped to 16.5U A prominent coke dealer said yesterday, however, mat the price ot uig iron had noth ing to do with the case. Coke has been selling at the same price for months, without regard to the price of pig. STILL HEAEDTG GRIEVANCES. The Pennsylvania Company's Committee Progressing Slowly. The Pennsylvania Company's Grievance Committee appointed a Press Committee yes terday whose duties are similar to those of other press committees, viz: Not to give out news. This committee consists of Edward "Wbalen. Theodore Minneman and Phil HerdeL However, nearly all .if yestcrdaj's session was ctinsumed in considering the grievances pre sented by one of the Northwestern Division Committees. Among the complaints entered were a num ber against the yardmasters and train dispatch ers, m -he effect that men are too freqnentlv calleduut of bed during the night and kept in the jards for hours beforo getting out on their runs, and sometimes not getting out at all. THE MEW WESE DISCHARGED. Semmelrock Bros. Deny That Their Drivers "Went Out on Strike. Henry Semmelrock. of Semmelrock Bros., stated last night that the trouble at their stable on the Southside had been greatly misrepre sented. The drivers did not strike against a stable boss, but w ere discharged because they wanted to "run the business," as he put It One of the drivers had been discharged for intoxi cation, and the men wanted him reinstated. This the firm refused to do and tho trouble fol lowed. Five of the men were discharged, but the (tatementjthat a baker drove sometimes and reiusea iiMXttud to his stock or carriages is ucuieu. 1 FURNACE SLOWS IN. Isabella No. 3 Lighted in the Presence or Many Manufacturers. Isabella Furnace So. 3, at Etna was blown yesterday afternoon. It is one ot the largest furnaces in the world. About 300 tons of heavy steel plat-s were used in the construction of the furnace. The distance of the blowing pngine is a 51-inch stroke, and its cost is $13,000. The capacity will be about 200 tons in 21 hoars. Quite a lame number of iron men went to Etna on the noon train yesterday and watched the lighting of the new furnace. The tire was started at 1 o'clock in the presence of Mr. Campbell Herron, John V. Chalfant, J. V. Painter fc Sons, Park Painter and others. They Joined tho Union. Agent Jewell found six non-union frescoers working at the Duquesne Theater, yesterday, anA informed them they would he obliged to Jola the Plasterers' organization, if they wanted iccontinue at the joo. Each paid him $10 for in embership aud w ork proceeded. Coal Minrn. Keturn to "Work. The miners ui the Stockdale coal mines have gone to work again after a seven weeks strike. A compromise was affected at 61 cents per ton. Hack to Coal Again. The Republic Iron "Works resumed operations yesterday, with all the puddling furnaces using coal. HORSES NOT "WANTED. An Ohio Man Spends a "Week Trj ing to Sell a Team. A man came to the city from a small Ohio town on the Ohio river a week ago, bringing a team of fine young driving horses which he wanted to sell as coach horses. Yesterday he returned on the steamer Congo, taking his hores with him. He said it was impossible to dispose of the animals for within S100 of as much as he can get for them right In his own place. The reason given by horse dealers for the light demand lor this kind of horses is that people are riding almost wholly on the cable and electric cars which reach almost every part efthetno cities. Tension Agent Bengough Takes Hold. H. H. Bengough took charge ot the Pension Agency yesterday, and $1,300,000 is alreadv on its wiy from Washington to pay the December pensions. William Flinn, Matt Weiss, C. F htoltzenhack and George Shepard are on Mr" Bengough'fc bond for $28,000 apiece. SHILOH'sCoughandConsumntionCureissold by us on a guarantee.
